Chef Michelle Bernstein is a local star in the culinary world. She was born and raised in Miami…read more and her restaurants include Café La Trova, Sweet Liberty and La Cañita. She is the host of Check, Please! South Floridaand SoFlo Taste and she has appeared on Top Chef, Chopped, and Good Morning America. Michelle Bernstein's Michy's Chicken Shack is located on the second floor of Julia and Henry's food hall. Not sure if it was the crowds or lack of AC but it was hot up there. The stall has a bar counter with pretty stools, and a couple of high tops and tables around it. Chef Bernstein first featured her fried chicken at her upper east side restaurant Michy's which closed in 2014. The fried chicken was one of her most requested dishes so she brougt it back in the form of a fast casual resturant concept, Michy's Chicken Shack, The chicken is marinated overnight in buttermilk and then seasoned with fresh tarragon, Dijon mustard, celery seed, and black pepper before being fried to order. The fried chicken is then featured in sandwiches, salads, and dinners. Sides include coleslaw, cheddar biscuits, and B&B pickles. Dessert is an apple empanada. My friend and I decided to split an order of the chicken tenders served with fries and an order of the cheddar biscuits. I loved the flavor of the chicken and it was juicy but the tenders were not uniformly sized. One of the four pieces was a 1/4 of the size of the other tenders. For $14 it felt like a rip off. Also the cheddar biscuits weren't good at all. They were dry with no seasoning or cheddar flavor. Red Lobster has Michy's beat on their biscuits by a mile. While I was waiting for my food I couldn't help but notice that the clear container used to dreg chicken was left on the floor outside the stall under the window. Not very appetizing or sanitary. I left Michy's disappointed as I expected more from an acclaimed chef led stall. The food is really expensive too which I would not have minded if it was stellar. Unfortunately it fell short for me.

Vibe 305 is a food truck at the corner of N. Miami Ave and NE 29th St. in Wynwood (right next to…read moreMorgans). It's a simple menu with prices ranging from $8-10 but the food is savory and well-priced, and you will always be served with a smile. They offer a variety of tasty items including chicken caesar salads or wraps, chicken tenders or wings, BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, quesadillas, cheeseburgers, and eggroll sandwiches (that last one is very Miami - it's a mix of eggrolls, smoked pork, ham & cheese, pickles, and honey mustard. It may not sound like it works but it SO SO DOES). The French fries are killer - extra crispy and seasoned perfectly - but if you want to go the healthier route you can substitute salad for an upcharge of $1.50. A variety of sodas and waters are also available for purchase for $2. Even more so than the food itself, WHO is serving you is key here: all the young men who work there are participants in the Empowered Youth program. EY is an intervention program for kids 13-18 who got in trouble with the law (minor, nonviolent offenses) and have made a commitment to participate in EY to have their record expunged. Since 2006, EY has provided mentorship opportunities for these young men, most of whom have no male role model at home. They also learn anger management, receive tutoring assistance, and job training - like what is provided via the Vibe 305 food truck, where participants who have studied with a chef and have received their Food Handler and/or Food Safety Manager Certification can participate. EY does a great job in providing these at-risk inner-city youth the tools and support they need to change their life's trajectory and not only beat the odds but also to become positive, productive role models in their families and communities. The goal of EY is to lower the re-offending rate among at-risk youth, and give them the tools to make better choices and create positive lives for themselves. Stopping at Vibe 305 for lunch or dinner means not only a nice meal that won't break your wallet, more importantly it means you are helping invest in a better future for these bright young men who are making the most of their second chance.
