We drove right past the sign for Starr and turned around to check it out...very glad we did. The Starr Campground sits right off the highway and has 11 sites set in 2 sections, an upper loop and a lower section. When we stayed last Thursday night there was only one other party camping. Our neighbors were set up in the lower section where the sites are a bit more spread out, while we opted to stay in the loop nearer the highway. Nothing at the campground is far from the highway, but we found it peaceful. Each section has a vault toilet, and the upper one was surprisingly clean, as was the campground overall. The setting is lovely, engulfed in beautiful trees...including some larches that were turning their gorgeous yellow while we were there. The sites at Starr are only $6, a tiny price to pay for a beautiful night in the Malheur Forest. Highly Recommend!

But the toilets were the cleanest I've EVER experienced at any campground, anywhere! Aside from their immaculate cleanliness, they even SMELLED pleasant! I mean, I would literally have felt comfortable sleeping in them, even. I gave it 4 stars because it's kinda close to the highway...but that stretch of the 395 isn't very frequently traveled (or at least it wasn't at the time of my visit, in mid-July 2015)...so it's not really bothersome. Just not as scenic/remote as I like. But really, a nice place overall.

But what really sets this place apart is the staff. We had our RV side door ripped off 4 out of 6 hinges by a nasty gust of wind, popping the rivet heads off all the hinge rivets on a Friday night. How was I going to fix that? Noboy is even open until Monday. Well, Dan at Sumpter Pines got out his drills to drill out the rivets, tap the holes in the frame and screw in some new aluminum screws. And he did it for free!! What a guy!! He saved out trip from possibly losing the door and wasting precious vacation time at an RV repair garage. He saved our vacation out of his skills and good nature. Thank you Dan!!

I steadfastly maintain that sharing is caring, and that to hoard these locations is greedy and selfish...so I'm sharing this info here with the request that, if you visit these springs, PLEASE be respectful and PACK OUT YOUR TRASH!!! I've see so many hot springs strewn with gross litter (including human and pet waste) that it really turns my stomach.** All-natural hot spring pool on an island in the middle of the Malheur River. I visited in mid-July 2015, and had to wade across the fairly swift-moving river to reach the island -- a car wouldn't have made it. To reach the island, follow U.S. 20 east across the bridge over the river at Horseshoe Bend, then take the first left -- a dirt road which winds back along the river. Park on the riverbank and wade across, or (depending on water level) if you have a hardcore rig, drive across. There were two pools: a nice hot one on the island itself, big enough for several people, with a sandy bottom and plenty of flat space nearby on the island for camping. There was also a second pool built into the side of the island on the river itself, which is cooler because of the river water mixing in with the source water. No shade at all on the island (it's high desert), and rattlesnakes in the area. But I still give it 4 stars because of its remote inaccessability -- I guess it used to be a party spot (or maybe still is), but it's difficult enough to access that I can't see how that's possible. I would definitely come here again, and maybe even camp out!

We pulled our 22ft trailer here to camp over the 4th of July holiday. This is a great location to…read moreuse as a base camp for exploring the beauty of Wheeler County. There is a mix of tent and trailer sites. Some of the sites are small and some are absolutely HUGE, about half the sites have water, however there is no electricity or sewage dump. We camped in site #2 which was a 70ft pull through, however I wouldn't recommend anyone pulling anything larger than say 34ft as some of the corners would be hard to make. The rates were $10 first night and $5 each night thereafter at the time we stayed here in the summer of 2010. We highly recommend this park, it's very beautiful, our only wish is that it was farther from the highway as you can here the traffic going by, otherwise great!

Shelton Wayside operates on the honest John system which I appreciate. It's nice not having a state…read morepark ranger breathing down your neck about everything. You just insert your payment in the box and move on with your life. It's $10 the first night and $5 thereafter. Extra vehicle fees are $5 which each campsite has one included. Bathrooms are clean and there is flat ground to pitch a tent. There are cold water spickets. There are a couple of trails but otherwise the most entertainment you'll find is away from the park. Another reviewer said the road traffic was loud, but it never bothered us once. There's so few cars on Hwy 19, and this was a busy weekend. Still didn't hear much. There is firewood for $5 an armload and it's also the honest John system. Call for reservations if you have a group or just show up first come first serve. Definitely worth it for a trip to Fossil or the Painted Hills when you have nothing to do during the day.

Great campground! Very clean and well kempt grounds, really nice and very clean bathrooms. (I…read morecannot overstate how clean the place was.) The owner seemed really nice though I didn't do the booking or talk with him much, personally. The park is dog and kid-friendly. The creek is nice and cold and was great for the kids to play in and was easy to access. (I.e., no stairs to go down, etc.) There was plenty of parking for our crew which was really helpful. There are no water or sewer hookups at each site, but you can do a septic dump on your way out of the park. I think you can also fill your water tank when you enter. (I don't manage the trailer, as you can tell. :) Adjacent to the RV park is a city park for kids with swings, slides, etc. There's also a tennis court with a basketball hoop in it. Just up on the main street there's a little store and coffee shop, though they're closed a couple of days in the middle of the week. Down the road a tiny bit, there's a mercantile with all the basics you might need. There are a couple other little spots in town but those are the ones we most frequented. We went into John Day, Mitchell, and the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center in Kimberly on our day trips. A bit of a drive, but made for nice activities. (FYI, everything in this area of Oregon will be a drive.) General note: Come prepared with sunscreen, hats, a pop-up shade, and lots of mosquito repellent and bug bite cream. It gets pretty hot in Dayville, and thunderstorms rolled through almost every day of our trip. Overall I definitely recommend South Fork RV Park and visiting Dayville and surrounding areas!

This is a great campground on the northern edge of Phillips Lke between Baker City and Sumpter…read more Surrounded by ponderosa pines, the campsites are spacious and farher apart than in many campgrounds. Individual sites include water and electricity and there are also tent-only and group sites.. From Boise, it's about the same distance as going to McCall, but the drive along the freeway is much easier. The campground is also available for day use; many picnic tables are spread out between campsites and the lake. A paved trail circles the lake for walkers and bikers. We really enjoyed our stay here and look forward to a return visit.
