We spent 7 hours in the pod yesterday. Beautiful pod ride. Riders need rest. Searching for lodging.on our U.S. 395 tour I found Hotel Prairie. Arriving, we found a trim, inviting Front Street, Hotel Prairie on the east end. Juniper Dining Room closed Monday and Tuesday. This cornerstone of days gone by is a labor of love. I got a bed and breakfast feeling mixed with vacation stay faborite feeling. There's a community kitchen at the end of the hall - for those awkward Monday and Tuesday morning meals. It is an old hotel, redone well. Our room was quiet, sleep deep. The bathroom had a handicap shower if we were inclined. Our headboard was a reused old door. Very nice. If you are headed through or to Prairie City and day is running low, Try Hotel Prairie. We would again. read more

On our way to Boise Idaho we stopped here. This is the best little hotel I have ever stayed in the people that help you when you walk in are some of the nicest and kindest people you will ever meet. Their service is unmatched beds are very comfortable and their lobby is so cozy especially during the winter. The atmosphere is great and the rooms were overall very clean and nice. Also a great dinner spot is the Oxbow that was great dinner. Also recommend going to their little breakfast spot. The waitresses are amazing and so is the food. I would recommend this 10,000 stars. read more

A situation arose in which the management disappointed me. If they had been better trained, I felt they could have worked more effectively to find a resolution where everyone would be happy. Instead, they merely made me feel inadequate for having raised the issue at all. read more

I enjoyed staying at Hotel Prairie in Prairie City, OR. I loved how the proprietor remodeled the hotel to take me back closer to what it might have been like in i's earlier days. The room was clean, spacious, affordably priced and the staff was friendly and helpful. They offer breakfast in the morning at affordable prices and give a discount coupon to help offset the cost. I will be coming back again, and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling through. I give this place a two thumbs' up! Make plans to stay at Hotel Prairie and enjoy the many historic places. read more

Rode in late last night on the bike...after our third close call with deer, we decided to call it a night. Gloria helped us feel right at home. The atmosphere was rustic, peaceful, and charming. As previously reviewed, this place is immaculate, no doubt. I ended up here because John Day was super crowded with Forest Service personnel undertaking a training event...consider this if you are headed into the area as a tourist without lodging reservations. Anyhow, I could not have been more pleased when a motel clerk in John Day sent me here. Prairie is much more my kind of place. Here it is quiet and charming and just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of Grant County over in John Day. I explored Fossil Beds and the Strawberry Mountains in my short stay. Back to the place. I got in late and was met by the manager who left me with the entire 9 room facility to myself! Wow what a treat...perfectly clean and large room and independent access to indoor and outdoor common areas. This was absolutely worth the value of the rate (AAA applies) and I decided on the spot to stay an extra night. Everything works great. The internet is super fast. Tall ceilings (I was in room 4 on the bottom level). Privacy. I cannot complain. I'd worried upon arrival about getting my things in and out as I have become accustomed to drive up motels as I travel often, but it was really little trouble moving my things in a side door to my bottom level room. The building is certainly old, but the entire place was gutted and redone in 2008 so it is like new. This is a great get-away. Come out of your way to stay here. read more

I first found this hotel as a part of the "destination charging" program for Tesla owners, a place to charge your car while you're staying there. The hotel is in a nice historic building but it's very well maintained and clean. I especially liked that (unlike in many other historic hotels) ventilation and heating systems are well designed and quiet. So far I've returned to this hotel 3 times. It's a really nice location that gives easy access to surrounding area that have many, many nice secluded hiking trails. read more

We absolutely adored the Hotel Prairie. Quiet, well-arranged, friendly and thoughtfully done. The whole town was closed down when we came through so we ended up using the kitchen at the hotel which was clean and well-equipped. We enjoyed a lovely meal on their beautiful back porch with great wine from the hotel bar. Being able to bring the kid and the dog to such a lovely and peaceful place was a big plus. We look forward to coming back and spending more time here. read more

This place is as good as it gets in small town hotels. It is immaculately furnished. It is white glove clean. It is obviously historic but it has all the modern luxuries. My wife and I stayed here with our one year old son. Our room was spacious enough for his portable crib and then some. Prairie City is a tiny town so my expectations were pretty low, but this place blew my preconceptions out of the water. They have a kitchen down stairs that is clean and very convenient to use. Also make sure to visit the back yard it is a nice place to sit in the evening and relax. read more

A Hidden Treasure in Eastern Oregon...... A stay at the Hotel Prairie is like stepping back in time to the rural old west, but with the comforts of a modern hotel. Historical pictures line the walls. This beautifully restored historic hotel has very comfy beds. Their rooms nicely appointed and simple decor made for a cozy stay. After a full days drive I thoroughly enjoyed the long hot shower! There's also a lovely lobby/living room with plush leather sofas and a fireplace. The hotel has a small kitchen with a fridge and microwave which is a great asset for travelers. Jenny, the hotel's manager, along with her handsome & polite young son, were very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Don't hesitate to bring along your dog, as they're made to feel just as welcome. We found the hotel to be clean, relaxing and comfortable. If you're looking for accommodations in Prairie City, or the John Day area, The Hotel Prairie will not disappoint. read more

We went to this hotel on January 02, 2013 and stayed the night. The manager met us after hours because we got in late, which was just awesome of her. The place was immaculate, with a very "homey" feel to it. We had our choice of rooms because we were to be the only guests that night. After we checked in, we had the place to ourselves and I, while not normally comfortable in hotels, was very comfortable. The bed was very nice and I slept like a log after a long trip. I took my dog with me as well, and he was welcomed by the manager and her son. All in all, if I get back up this way, I will not hesitate to stay at this place. I highly recommend this establishment as one of the premier places to stay in this area. read more

I came here with my friend from Portland that has family in the area. This hotel is really great. Can't say enough positives about it. We stayed in a suite room which is probably around 700 sq ft. Everything was clean and so cute. For the price you can't beat this historical masterpiece. I would stay again in a heartbeat. read more

This place is fantastic! Even better than expected. The staff is so kind. The room is comfortable, clean, and cool in this 95F degree weather. The kitchen area and back garden is so great. I appreciated being able to keep a few things in the refrigerator and being able to use their dishes, toaster, tea kettle, etc... The building is gorgeous and I love learning about the history of the building and the town. And the hotel is dog friendly! 100% would come back here. read more

When I saw what they charged me for my single room I was embarrassed for them. A hotel with no complimentary breakfast, a TV the size of a shoebox with only 15 channels, no staff on site 24-hours, and a communal kitchen that has bad coffee. $115. It's no secret why they don't advertise their price online and encourage you to call. Might be the only option in town and they'll sure take advantage of you for that. read more

I can't believe I haven't taken the time to write a review for Hotel Prairie. This is a fantastic place to stay, and well taken care of. I've stayed there twice now, and am dreaming of when I can get back for another visit. The lobby is a place you want to linger, and they make it easy to do. Decorated with historic photos of the area, it has good seating to curl up with a book and watch the sun set. We got the same room both times as we liked it so much. Such good memories of reading on the couch, getting up in the morning and getting coffee at the restaurant next to the hotel. This is clearly a place the owners care about, and it shows. A fantastic place to have as a base for exploring John Day, Strawberry Mountain, and Eastern Oregon in general. Can't wait to go back. read more

This is great old hotel with nice rooms. As expected in an old place, the walls are a little thin but nothing obnoxious. The wine bar in the lobby is a great place to hang out. Gloria, who was behind the bar, was exceptional. We stayed here while riding the Old West Scenic Bikeway and the hotel is very bike friendly. Would definitely stay again! read more

Great place to spend a night or two and relax in peace. Hotel restoration is done with class and an eye towards the locale. Cowhide, photos and pictures. From the front sitting area out front I can gaze across the street to the nursing home that is my birthplace...it was the area hospital in the '40's! I have even seen a deer or two glazing on the lawn. Last visit two years ago was good but this past week was even better with air conditioning. Great restaurants a few doors down. Spend a night, want to stay a week. I rarely give five-stars. read more

What a fun, curious, friendly hotel! Great suite! Fun, casual dinner; one entree served each night and 2 salad choices, served on disposable plates. The lobby's complimentary, iced strawberry water was a hit with all ages of our group. Our kids had to flip a coin to see who would get to sleep in the single bed "nook" and who would take the fold out chair - single bed. In our suite, we had a FULL kitchen and the bathroom had TWO sinks and a great shower head. Two comfy couches and a comfy chair/bed in the living/kitchen area made it easy to hang out and/or crash. Hotel Prairie City was the PERFECT place to spend the eclipse weekend. read more

Fabulous hotel. Well located and nicely decorated. Extremely comfortable beds. Also love that they have washable duvet covers. Everything seemed very clean. Friendly staff and good coffee in the morning. Overall lots of charm and was actually cheaper than the chain hotels in John Day. We highly recommend a stay here if you are passing through the Painted Hills. read more
