Lately watching CNBC has been like going over Niagra Falls in a barrel... not for the timid, easily squeamish or entirely sane. That said, it's more than adequate for a quick overview of where things are. Occasionally they'll feature some major interviews but by and large they tend to trade in conventional wisdom and groupthink. Looking forward it will be interesting to see what happens when they completely separate from NBC and NBC News. It's easy to imagine a fairly expensive subscription tier for insiders, professionals and the trader class where information is truly currency. A solid four stars. read more

CNBC is an American business news channel owned by the NBC Universal. This network broadcasts business news and trading. I'm not into anything involved with that content. I watch the occasional NBC Sports presentations. CNBC also maintains a studio at the Nasdaq Market Site in Times Square. I'm also not interested in visiting their studios. I really don't know how to rate CNBC because if you enjoy this type of television viewing you enjoy hearing about numbers. I'm into numbers but not numbers I can't control. I never play lotto and I don't play with the stock market. Everyone tries to predict this or that market ups and downs. I remember when I could fill my gas tank for five dollars and I wrote a check to pay for it! The times they are a changing again! CNBC channel should be about real financial news and it kind of is. I consider it more of an entertainment channel. When the stock market goes up, it's all about how great things are. When it goes down, it's like the sky is falling. Bipolar content - for lack of a better term. Bloomberg channel is much easier to watch, less drama, less politics. I learn a lot watching their programs on the Asian markets and what's happening on the other side of the world. read more

If you're really good you can gauge the commercials and how they play into the market. Earnings reports can make or break a stock (and sectors) and you'll want to listen to or read (on cnbc.com) the timely updates and reviews of all CNBC Reporters to get the best feel for what might happen and when. If you watch regularly you'll see that solar and alternate energy stocks tend to go higher when gas/oil goes higher, for obvious reasons. Boone Pickens placed the largest ever wind farm order from GE recently to help fuel the alternate energy CRAZE and he recommends Nat Gas as the way of eliminating our oil import dependencies. WHAT ABOUT THOSE GAS PRICES? Well, if you're a faithful CNBC watcher you would beg to have them replay an interview with one of the OPEC execs from a year or two ago that addressed that very question. And the answer that billionaire exec gave, and I can only summarize to the best of my memory because I didn't tape it, was that OIL IS A BUSINESS.and if they can raise prices and we pay it, they will do that to give returns to their investors, as all businesses do. ALSO as a faithful CNBC watcher you might initially wonder why the SEC investigated that couple that profited heavy from the DOW Jones, News Corp purchase offer announcement because that announcement I believe was made on CNBC some time within a month or two previous to the official announcement, made as an unexpanded blurb/spec with that exact price range, of around 60$. I remember because I started research right away after the blurb and I thought it was Ticker: DOW because they never mentioned the ticker. It was pursued and settled as a real insider trading case, but I remember looking into it myself, before the initial announcement ... wish I had actually invested ... But I digress ... WATCH CNBC or check out CNBC.com and for goodness sake, REGISTER FOR THE CNBC PORTFOLIO CHALLENGE!!!! You COULD WIN A MILLION DOLLARS or any one of the six top prizes or 10 weekly prizes! CNBC is like TMZ for stocks. They're always creating drama around individual stocks and the market. They bring on the doom and gloom people when the market is falling, really bullish people when the market is rising. They don't help viewers at all, mostly try to profit off fear by selling advertising. Last but not least, they let all of their good people go like Erin Burnett and Maria Bartiromo of closing bell. Jim Cramer hated Apple below $400, now he loves it above $650 (pre split). How does that help the individual investor? As a trader/investor for over 16 years, my advice is to keep the TV off or you will get caught up in CNBC's drama circus. read more

I like their partnership with Dow jones because of the access to Wall Street Journal's reporters. I wish they showed European business news in the middle of the night instead of informercials. I'm not sure why CNBC Asia is headquartered in Singapore when Hong Kong is the financial center. Mad Money is kind of hilarious when he's not yelling. It's late at night....well, actually, early in the morning PST. I'm watching CNBC and realize....what a load of crock. In the midst of one of the greatest financial disasters in recent history, a disaster they had no idea would happen, or at least were not willing to seriously investigate (again in my opinion), they are actually spending air time listing the top 10 billionaires of 2008. What the F#&K! Interviewing fund managers saying that stocks will go up, who probably hold long positions in the stock with some put options to hedge the downside....self serving in my opinion. Talking with hedge fund managers who might have speculated with extreme leverage on risky derivatives and are now blaming policy makers for the problem. "Journalist" who appear to be 99.99% Posner/Friedman Cool-Aid drinkers, global warming doubtists.....fair and balanced? CNBC is increasingly the news equivalent of your S&M madam....lots of eye candy who are more than glad to say that YOU are the problem, whip and punish you for ephemeral wrongdoings, and then you have the privilege of paying them for the humiliation. When I'm not outside working, I'm paying attention to the markets and business news....that's when I have CNBC running in the background. My favorite anchor person? BILL GRIFFETH hands down! He's sharp, articulate, witty, to the point and always, always ALWAYS professional. Right behind is Erin Burnett. She's also elequent in speech and dresses well....take note Sue Herrerra, (step away from those solid jackets!) and Maria Bartiromo, I can't take that lisp. Sorry to be a bit caddy, but if you're in front of the camera for a living, you should be easy on the eyes and ears. Why only 4 stars, you ask? Perhaps if there were no commercials, I'd give it a 5 star rating, but I understand that programs are paid by advertisers. And some of those advertisers interrupt the ticker symbol streamline quotes that run across the bottom of the screen, (and the markets across the top). Annoying.
