I finally realised how old and uncool I was when found out that a new Sainsbury's Local was being…read morebuilt at the end of my road, and the discovery was basically the highlight of my week. Admittedly the prospect of being delivered from the evils of the nearby Tesco Express would probably be enough to raise most people's spirits, but it was with a rather unhealthy level of longing that I gazed upon the wooden facing that for a few weeks shielded the work going on inside. The Sainsbury's is now open, and, unsurprisingly, it's OK. Nothing amazing, but it's definitely an improvement. For one thing they sell coffee filter papers, but their stock in general is more wide ranging. I even managed to buy hollandaise sauce in there, although I wouldn't recommend hollandaise out of a jar, it turned out to taste of jellied vinegar. They have more service points than the Tesco too, and the cherry on the cake is the free cashpoint. Until that one arrived it was a good 10 minute walk in either direction to get to a free cashpoint, which meant a lot of money was wasted on buying small items in the Tesco in order to get cash back.

They also have a range of deli style ingredients, including quality olive oils and balsamic vinegars. The guy manning the shop was a good bloke and happy to recommend his top picks of the sausages available. I would certainly come here to get my snags if I was cooking up a sausage and mash and was looking to impress. The steaks are hung twice as long as you'd get in Tescos and taste ten times better (try the sirloin). When cooking your Saturday fry-up, its worth buying your sausages, bacon and eggs from here. The bacon doesn't have that watery stuff emulating from it when cooked and the sausages are so moreish. Its a nice place to buy some bits for lunch too. The bread and cold meats are great to share but my favourites are the Jamaican pasties they make.

It seems to be this second point that balances out the first. It strikes me, that if you have the relatives, or some friends coming round for diner, but can't cook and need to give the impression you can, then Cook is the place to run to. Everything looks plausably home made, in the same way that some cookery books give you images of nice looking food that's not too expensive or difficult to make luring you into attempting the dish yourself. You soon find out however, that the meal in the book looked so tasty because its sitting on a granite work surface in an ornate bowl that has never even seen the inside of a sink, and has about 500 watts of light illuminating it. Style over substance.... But at least Cook has the substance, just not to the degree the price asks for if you ask me.

It's frozen food for people in hurry but it's high quality and very, very tasty. I really think the various curries they do are top notch and prefer them to a takeaway. For £6.99 or thereabouts you get a very delicious dish for two and hearty portions they are. Also you can bag party nibbles and desserts to die for. Basically, if you so wish, you can pass this stuff off as your own. There's also a branch in Lewes. Not cheap, but good value. This is the good stuff.
