The 'front countyer' daily business of the post office moved to the back of Martins the Newsagents, and the main sorting office moved to the purpose-built warehousing at Robins Lane. There is a collection service available from here, if you get home and fine one of those cards telling you that the postman was unable to deliver. They're only open for a few hours each morning (check the card for exact times) but if you need your stuff in a hurry, you can pootle along there. If you need to arrange re-delivery - LOCAL TIP - don't phone the automated service or try and book online - you'll always be given the day after tomorrow. Instead, use the local landline direct to the depot - the staff there have always been brilliantly helpful and will get it out the next day for you if humanly possible (and they've always come up trumps). Plenty of space to park if you drive up there, but a bit of a haul to have to walk up there.

Arnos Vale cemetery absolutely fascinates me - its war memorials, elaborate tombs of Indian maharaja and big Cliftonite family mauseleoums. There's nowt creepy about it - with butterflies and birds and flowers growing over everything. They're even buidling a multi-million pound new glass visitor centre and restoring all the Grade II listed monuments that are dotted about the place. You can get lost for several hours in amongst the stones. The vale is great for stretching your legs and broadening your historical knowledge, and close enough to Bath rd, the Paintworks and Banco lounge for a quick drink afterwards if you fancy it.

Nothing beats a good cemetery!…read more I can't say I would make a special trip to visit the cemetery (I don't have any loved ones residing here) but we were passing it one day in the car, the sun was shining, so we thought we'd have a little walk around. There is something quite absorbing about being able to read snippets of people's lives, try and work out what they might have been like, the plot thickens when you sometimes find connected people buried side by side. I never did the whole grave yard at night thing in my teenage years, but I would certainly recommend a visit in the day should you be that neck of the woods.

Cobwood Bros Hardware Store is replaced by a second hand store…read more... The Second Hand Shop on Clifton Street is a recent addition to this struggling commercial road. It used to be Cobwood Bros. hardware store for as long as anyone can remember, but the one way system coupled with the recession saw it close its doors for the last time this year. This is a huge loss to Clifton Street as well as the owners. The Second Hand Shop doesn't actually have a name, but this is what the locals are calling it, and so I guess it will stick. It is likely that discount and second hand stores are the only types of business that will survive on this strangulated street since the councils decision to implement a questionable one way system in the area. The cafes and takeaways will also survive, but the level of trade that they will lose over time will mean that there are mean pickings from here on in... it's a sorry state of affairs! Although I rue the loss of Cobwood Bros. I have to admit to really liking The Second Hand Shop. It is full of my kind of tat, ranging from white goods to furniture and bric-a-brac.

Located…read morenear Debenhams and the old location of House of Fraser, it attracts a good amount of customers due to it's proximity to major shops and the amount of items it has on offer for sale every week. There is parking available in the Broadmead area, busses stop by the front doors and it's easy to get to by foot. The shop doubled in size over a year ago, and has twice as many rails and shelves of new and used items for sale in support of the 2 St Peter's Hospices. This is the busiest of the shops and well worth a look for all sorts of bargains: clothing & accessories, shoes, books, music, film, toys & games and bric-a-brac.

Opened in 1874, just under 3000 mostly forgotten souls rest here in the Mendip Hospital Cemetery, burial ground of the old Somerset County Pauper Lunatic Asylum. Situated in a beautiful wooded valley on the edge of Wells, the cemetery is a haven of peace and tranquility. Birds and wildlife are found in abundance. The grass is cut each year in early autumn to encourage seeds to set and wild flowers to flourish. In the chapel you will find original maps and plans of the hospital and an exhibition about the history of the hospital and its burial ground.
