It's a fine enough store with a good selection, but the guy behind the counter seemed irritated when I asked about their pull list system. I tried to register online and ran into issues; when I went back in, it felt like more of a hassle for Mr. Beanie-Glasses-¿Chin-Strap-Beard? (hard to really remember). This kind of dismissive behavior isn't uncommon in comic book shops. Having been a regular reader for years, I can confidently say there's a certain hipster element embedded in comic culture that lacks the self-awareness that the "better-than-you" attitude is a dime a dozen. I place my weekly pulls with Casablanca Comics, where the staff are not only enjoyable to talk with, but actually remember your name and want to help. This shouldn't discount the efforts of the other, surely more personable employees--nor at least a visit or two to check out their selection--but it definitely detracts from any kind of regular patronage. read more

I visited Coast City Comics during my recent vacation to Maine. It was a cold, rainy day - my first day in Portland - so I was looking for cool, fun things to do. The actual name of this place is: "Coast City Comics & The Fun Box Monster Emporium." There is a ton of comic books, games, action figures, and related "stuff" crammed into this place. The man behind the register was so incredibly disrespectful that I was shocked into silence. I asked if they had a larger dungeons and dragons section that I was unable to see, to which the man behind the register said "have you tried looking three feet to your left?" To which I said yes, and he replied with "okay, so dont bother me again" in an extremely agressive tone and walked away from my view. I had multiple onlookers vouch that I was polite, and that his tone and behavior was unwarranted. Horrific experience, would not recommend. read more

So much more than just a comic shop. This place is transportive, escapist, nostalgic, subversive & commercial all at the same time. Filled to brim w comics seemingly in every crevice, everything is well labeled even if overwhelming. The toys & paraphernalia feel cluttered, but are perfectly organized once you pay attention. The place is curated well and contains a plethora of pop-culture artifacts that easily span decades. The tshirts are a lot of fun w references to everything from movies, comics, music, local lore, & a fascinating take on Baphomet that deserves artistic praise. The only downside I need to mention is that the store contents encourage browsing & a leisurely pace to take it ALL in, but the spaces are tight & there's no restroom available. I felt some cognitive dissonance wanting to stay & FIND something to spend money on but also getting out of the way. Not an easy problem to solve, I imagine, considering the space available at the location. And perhaps part of the charm. read more

This is a really cool spot. Not a ton of room, but they use the space perfectly. New releases are right on the left as soon as you walk in, and then you can get into the real meat of the store. There's plenty to look at to keep you busy for a bit. Great shop, makes me jealous that we don't have something like this. read more

This place feels like a real city store, in that it reminds me of the great, tiny comic book shops in New York City. But it's better because it's cleaner and friendlier and it's never clogged with so many people you can't move. They have an insane collection of everything. The back of the store is pinball machines and games, and they have a change machine, which is awesome. Coming in here is like being transported into another dimension of entertainment and amusement. During my visit, several of my fondest childhood memories flooded back as I perused an extensive collection of authentic old school toys, video game cartridges, a small but sufficient pinball arcade, comic books, and lots of other relics that I hadn't seen or heard about in decades. Coast City Comics is a must-visit when in the Portland area. It's like an museum of awesome, where everything is for sale. At a minimum, stop by to get the feels and to pick up a sweet Coast City Comics t-shirt (like I did) for $15. Love this store. T shirts, decals, stickers, toys and music. Live in Seattle and miss places like this that fill every inch with cool stuff.

The retro toys and pinball machines alone are worth a visit. You'll find He-Man, Ninja Turtles, M.U.S.C.L.E. Men, and other toys of yore that will make evoke an, "OMG, I remember those!" Happily, they're pretty darn affordable, so you can add some to your collection (or just impulse buy for no good reason) if you like. The whole back section of the store is filled with pinball machines. I don't really play, but it's very cool. The place has a pleasantly cluttered and slightly dirty feel, which works with the somewhat vintage vibe they have going. The staff will strike up a conversation with you about all things nerdy, if you want, and they're helpful and knowledgeable of their inventory. The comics selection is fine and dandy, just as you'd hope. I really dig this small comic book shop in Portland, ME. They not not only have what appears to be a good comic book selection, but they have awesome, quirky t-shirts, action figures, a large pin ball and arcade game selection (Classic Dr. Who pinball!? Hell yeah), and really cool large models of movie monsters (Jason, Freddie, etc). The staff are cool but mostly keep to themselves unless you have questions. Not a problem for me. Took a quick stop in here while visiting Portland and would go again! The walls at the entrance are lined with cases of enamel pins for sale which I loved. There were plenty of comics of course and many action figures as well. They had board and card games as well as other toys, new and vintage. Lots of different collectibles for nerds of all interests. They even had an LGBTQ+ comic book section which I appreciate. The man working there was very polite and easy going. Worth the trip! read more

We stumbled across this gem while wandering the city on foot. We could have easily spent hours in here looking through comics and toys. There is a room of pinball machines with a special glow. This place is a gem in the middle of the city. It's kinda confusing the first time you go in and you don't have a clue where anything specific is, but once you explore you end up with handfuls of comics and stuff you probably don't need but definitely deserve. (My husband says: 'treat yourself!') It's a pretty extensive collection there, all the DC and Marvel you'd ever need right next to Dark Horse, DC Vertigo, and some of the kinda fridge manga titles out there. Plus, if you head out back, they have the coolest arcade games ever. Like, it takes me twenty minutes to get the kids away from them sometimes. I gotta admit, though, I mostly go to buy Funko Pops for the kids. (And myself, no shame.) They got them at a really good price, and there's a whole lotta them. (Husband is telling me to stop putting them on his desk.) It's just a really good place to stop in and get something for your adult self and/or the kids. read more

Pin Ball Pinball machines are a rarity in today's arcades, most of them opting for the computerized $2-a-game explosion of light and sound that lasts 30 seconds and vomits tickets to win useless prizes. Coast City is a godsend for the pinball enthusiast, offering several unique, fully functional and well-calibrated tables. This place is heaven for the comic book, movie, toy and gaming enthusiast. I absolutely adore the owner he is joy to talk to and you can tell he is in love with what he is doing. He's one of those people you meet and then you are like, crap I wish that dude was my friend cause I wanna hang out and talk about dorky stuff and bring him comic book themed cupcakes or something... Actually everyone I've encountered there working or hanging out has been super friendly, the place inspires that I think, just warmth and camaraderie through shared interests. I came up to Portland in August from NH with a few friends to wander about the town for the day and we made this one of our necessary stops. While the place is tiny and crowded, the owners/staff of the shop were friendly, helpful and interested in talking with their customers, whether old or new. They had a great selection of the current comics, as well as a good sized back issue collection, along with memorabilia and what looks like a kick-ass Magic: the Gathering collection to paw through. Of note, while in the shop I overheard them telling a customer they have a discount program for students, so new customers may want to politely inquire. ;) I will definitely be returning here when I next come up to Portland. read more

Coast City opened up across the street from my old apartment and my first thought was "well... I guess I can get my paycheck most of the way home now..." and went in to check it out. They immediately started making personal recommendations for me almost immediately and currently throw stuff they know I'll like into my pulls. I have been to many comic book stores in my life and I've never felt as comfortable and at-home as I do when I stop in to Coast City Comics. Not only do I feel welcome as a fellow nerd, but I don't feel judged for my preferences as I have at other places. I feel bad giving this place a review when it's still in it's infancy as a comic book store. You can't crown a baby a king until it's done crowning. I just made up that disgusting expression (enjoy the imagery). It may be more accurate to say this place is in its adolescence. It's rife with potential, but has recently grown lethargic and unsure if its identity. It's glorious childhood is over. I visited this summer and found an unhealthy horde of magic players (healthy business, unhealthy hot pocket consumers), which is a great sign for a comic book store. Their half off selection of titles was amazing. The deals in single issue stuff was great. Original prints of Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns issue by issue for twenty bucks each. If you want a third edition print, you pay six bucks. In it's adolescence though, the store has grown slightly sleepy. The selection has decreased, the deals are less bountiful. I do not expect the teenage slump to mature into adult dilapidation. This store will strike back with a vengeance. And how! With the basics it's got going it could be maine's best comic store. The selection of toys, old video games, tee shirts, and comics is an amazing foundation. read more

I wish I lived near Portland! This place is awesome, especially for TMNT geeks like me! They have bins and bins of back issues. I got just about every older TMNT issue missing from my collection, and most of them were $5 each! They have lots of toys and games, and they have an arcade in the back... which includes an old TMNT game! Lots of things to do and to see here. The people who were there are very nice too. They also carry almost every book you can think of with a butt load of vintage toys. The owner also makes his own t-shirts which are always great designs. The folks at Coast City are the best. Vibe was fun and welcoming, but also clean and well organized (which is helpful, even in a comic book store, right?). The staff totally knew their stuff and helped me find what I was looking for right away.
