Marsh Bridge is situated on AL Hwy 135, with access to Lake Shelby and the Alligator Marsh Trail. You can engage in activities like birdwatching, fishing, and kayaking in the area. There's a limited amount of free off-road parking available. There's a fish weir here too and I see folks fishing here all the town as well a crabbing. * A weir is a small barrier built across a stream or river to control and raise the water level slightly on the upstream side, essentially a small-scale dam. It's also one of my favorite off-season places to catch a gorgeous sunrise. During the fall and winter months, the lower humidity contributes to clearer skies, making the sunrises even more breathtaking. The surroundings of the bridge, including the tranquil marsh and picturesque Lake Shelby, provide the perfect backdrop for this natural spectacle. I would recommend coming to witness this home and the historic downtown area. It's filled with beautiful period antiques, some which are familiar to me from my granny's home, that immediately transported me back my childhood. The grounds are beautiful with large Magnolia trees and 120 yr old Live Oak trees with Spanish moss everywhere and there's Azaleas, Hydrangeas and a variety of other plants and shrubs. The grounds all around are meticulously maintained giving the property vibrant look and appeal. Originally it was the home of Charles and Susan Swift and their 11 children, it was purchased in 1976 by Nik Coles. Before his death in 2007, he bequeathed the home to the Baldwin County Historic Development Commission. In 2009 the home was opened to the public and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A debt of gratitude is owed to Mr. Nik Coles for his contributions in saving one of the most colorful and outstanding examples of the turn of the century Gulf Coast architecture in our community. The Swift-Coles Historic Home is now open to the public for summer tours. The guided tours leads visitors through the 16 room historic tidewater mansion and grounds to experience how life along the Bon Secour River would have been nearly 100 years ago. There's lots of legends and lore about this place being haunted, many about the deceased displeasure with the renovations. I have been here several times and the last was recently with #1 son and my neighbor Claudine for a late night paranormal investigation with Panhandle Paranormal Group. It indeed was very cool! It is a deck plate girder bridge that was built in 1972. The main span is 180.1 feet long and the total bridge is 1762.2 feet long. It has a vertical clearance of 73 feet, which is tall enough for most sailboats and other traffic. A very busy bridge, it carries more than 10 million vehicles a year. That's a lot - a tenth as many as the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson in New York City! It is named for Doctor William C. Holmes, who opened Baldwin County's first hospital and ran it for 22 years before South Baldwin Regional Medical Center opened its doors. (Don't miss the W. C. Holmes Medical Museum.) Three lanes northbound and two lanes southbound, the southbound side has a breakdown/bicycle lane. There is no stopping on the bridge and I don't know about pedestrians, so I wouldn't recommend popping out for a photo of the Intracoastal. There is no toll to cross the bridge. We came here today because this is our local voting…read morelocation. This venue is our local Gulf Shores civic center and for a town of only 9,741 permanent residents, as if the 2010 census, it's is pretty darn impressive. It holds up to 600 people theater style, 320 people banquet style without the dance floor, and 260 people banquet style with the dance floor. I missed The Drifters here back in January but I'm looking forward to some of the events after everything opens back up but, of course, future events are on hold due the Covid-19. The building is also available for commercial events such as beauty pageants, concerts, corporate conventions, dance recitals, real estate expos, etc. Bottom line: It's a very nice venue with a lovely interior with professional sound, lighting, kitchen and plenty of parking.

Both Pensacola and the world have changed so much in the seventy-five years since those young adults of that first class walked beyond those doors seeking higher education and to pursue their dreams. The Baldwin County Bridge, it's official name, or the Foley Beach Express Bridge as it's referred to by us locals, is a toll bridge spans the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway at the southern end of the Foley Beach Expressway  (FBE) dumping onto Canal Rd in Orange Beach, AL adjacent to The Wharf.  The bridge was tolled and operated by BCBC. In December 2005, the Foley Beach Express was sold to Macquarie Infrastructure Group and incorporated into its American Roads, LLC portfolio, which already included three other Alabama toll roads and the Detroit Windsor Tunnel.The toll for two axeled vehicles used to be $2.75, but the toll trolls jacked it up to $5.25 when the lost the lawsuit to prevent our neighboring city from building a new alternative bridge nearby on Canal Road.  It was a long battle but the new bridge is finally under construction and there's some really great news about the bridge!!! Starting today, there will be no charge to drive across the Foley Beach Express Bridge after the state Alabama purchased the private toll bridge. Gov. Kay Ivey, or MeeMaw as many call her, announced yesterday that the state has completed its purchase of the toll bridge in Baldwin County. The $5 toll will be eliminated at noon today, March 23, 2024, and the bridge will be free to cross. Woohoo :-) The Alabama Department of Transportation purchased the bridge from the Baldwin County Bridge Company for $57 million, and  an additional $3 million will be paid to the city of Orange Beach for road improvements. When I said "toll trolls" I was referring to both The Baldwin County Bridge Company AND the city of Orange Beach. The Baldwin County Bridge Company had sued the state over constructing the new bridge, accusing the state transportation director of acting in bad faith during toll negotiations and then pursuing the new bridge project to financially damage the company. That finally got thrown out by the AL Supreme Court last year and here we are. But Orange Beach was also happy to lead the charge to stop the new bridge.
