Since our flight arrived early I was happy that the front desk was able to get us checked in early. Concierge walked up to us to hand us a box of chocolates and a welcoming note from the hotel. Staff was also responsive when we were short towels or in room amenities ran out. Our room was close to the M Club and a good size for us. Bed was comfy and bathroom was large. Breakfast was included as part of my benefits and the buffet and made to order items were the same every morning. Hot Buffet included scrambled eggs, haggis, bacon and sausages, mushrooms and tomatoes. Cold buffet had cereals, breads and pastries, yogurts and fruits. The smoked salmon plate was our favorite but porridge, waffles were other options. The M Club evening was ok for drinks but the finger food options were quite limited. The nut mix was my favorite. Location of the hotel was at the end of the Royal Mile which was less crowded and quieter. A Tesco convenience store was a short walk away and the Palace of Holyrood and Scottish Parliament sites close by. We arrived and departed via an Uber as it was more convenient for us. Would consider returning on a future trip back to Edinburgh.

Our room was a studio apartment with a kitchenette, mini washer/dryer, fridge, dishes and pans, stove, microwave, dishwasher, huge tub/shower combo, heated towel rack, iron and board, hair dryer, shampoo/conditioner/body wash/lotion/soap, small eating tanks, mirrored work desk/vanity, lots of windows, etc. There were plenty of regular and usb plugs. They brought fresh towels and remade our beds every day which was super nice. We couldn't figure out how to use the washer/dryer even after watching several online videos. Right before checking out we found instructions in a drawer not near the appliance. Oh, well. We dried clothes on the heated towel racks. The shower doesn't have a curtain or long glass panel so water squirted all over the bathroom. No bueno. And twin beds for a married couple on vacation weren't the best. The view wasn't great.

Unfortunately, the good parts mostly ended there. We stayed here 4 years ago and it seems like nothings's been maintained or cleaned particularly well since then. The first room we got had a kitchen that was clearly in disrepair and the living room furniture was stained. Both bedrooms were also set up with two twin beds configured as single king-sized beds, which didn't work for us with two kids, so we we asked to switch rooms. The good news was that they were able to do that without too much trouble. The new room had a kitchen that was in better order and cleaner furniture, but the room was smaller, darker and on a lower floor. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't good either. I think we may have gotten lucky the first time with a higher-floor room that had a view of the cliffs in front of Arthur's seat and been there when the rooms had been recently appointed. It was nice to have dishes, a stove, a microwave and dishwasher in addition to the two bedrooms. We even had a washer/"dryer" combination unit which we used. I put "dryer" in quotes because the clothes came out mostly dry--enough to hang up to dry in the room in a few hours--but not actually dry enough to put away. All-in-all, we'll probably look for something else the next time we're in Edinburgh, but if you want an affordable place with a good location and are willing overlook some dinginess, this place might be for you.

Friendly and helpful staff, nicely decorated guest rooms and public areas, and a terrific buffet breakfast. Great shopping/dining/whiskey sampling along the Royal Mile 2 blocks away. For those more fit than I, take one of the Tour buses up the hill (can get a bit steep) to Edinburgh Castle, then after your tour, leisurely eat drink, and shop your way back down to the Edinburgh Marriott.

We got upgraded to the superior room which was located on the 6th floor with a view of the city. Huge bathroom, comfortable bed, comes with a fridge and a safe. On our floor there were just 4 rooms close by with 2 elevators. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Luggage storage is available for free. Breakfast was not included but if you want one it's £17 per person add on. I definitely recommend Ten Hill. It is a bit pricey but love this hotel.

A restaurant is offered inside the hotel lobby for a about 15£ a meal. In addition, a full liquor bar called Surgeons Quarter is open late and we took advantage quickly by sampling the Belhaven Black Scottish Stout Beer and ordering a Coffee with Irish Cream. We moved to the comfy modern lounge (Yes, I had Irish coffee in Scotland). The rooms were delightfully contemporary modern with a spotless bathroom and steaming hot water pressure. In this country, we did not have to leave the windows open since we had ice cold a/c. The only negative was the beds are mini kings and hard as oak. We both woke each morning with severe pain back pain and numb arms and shoulders. The wife had a beautiful wood desk for her makeup expedition every morning with ample lighting. We walked to the Black Medicine Coffee Company next door to fetch a needed jolt of coffee and a salmon cream cheese bagel. After eight countries in twenty days, this one is easily in my top two best for the location, ammenities, staff and cleanliness. Recommend this place to all in search of a stress free relaxing vacation. Except for the one issue with the evil beds, this hotel receives a strong 4.8 star rating.

It had two beds-one was a king and the other a queen. What a nice surprise! There is no air conditioning in most hotels in Europe. With the windows open and a fan I was quite comfortable because the temp was around 60° the three nights we were there. The hubby who likes it much colder said it was bearable. The staff was friendly. The hotel was clean. I don't remember if breakfast is included in the price. There is a buffet breakfast or you can order off the menu. The last morning I ordered the smoked salmon, poached eggs, and sourdough toast off the hot menu. It was delicious. Had to have smoked salmon before I left Scotland...wish I would have ordered it sooner. Yummy. Would have given it 4 stars but with the lack of ac and having to climb several sets of stairs before you get to the elevator I'm giving it 3 stars. In all fairness, on occasion I did use the hotel ramp to get into or leave the hotel but that entailed walking through the rain. It did, however, lead you directly to the elevator.

So some amount of "luxury" is as expected. We did not get the room requested and that was a disappointment. We did not inquire after seeing the room to be fair. The lack of any amenities in the bathroom at the price point was astounding. I have stayed in holiday inn express establishment that have some level of amenities. The Scotsman had none aside from the body wash, shampoo and conditioner in large bottles. That's fine I guess but not for the premium price point. The room had no heat at all. Even after contacting the front desk the excuse given was "the building is quite old and takes a few minutes to heat up. But the fan would not even turn on. At some point it did turn on but only blew cool/cold air. We were given a small space heater to help warm the cold room. Our room was on the ground floor at the corner and well. The bathroom window looks right onto the sidewalk outside and has clear glass. Yup. Everyone can look right in. Of course they have shades that you can pull down to block the view in and out of the bath. Problem solved unless you want natural light while you get ready for the day. Maybe frosted glass would help. Also as far as amenities, towels were rough and scratchy. Only two hangers in the closet is crazy and only to hang shirts. So if you want to hang dress pants? Well, bring some from home. The restaurant however beautiful, was lack luster in food quality and service. The front desk people working were helpful in calling a cab for us when it was time to leave and as helpful as they could be given the situation that had to deal with. I never expected them to fix the heat. But maybe the managers should help them out by addressing the situations? I was really looking forward to staying in this hotel after looking at all the photos on line and the location is AMAZING. But in hindsight I would choose another place to stay. I WILL SAY THIS. the bathrooms are not gendered, so you'll be showering/pooping (in private stalls of course) with both sexes, so if that's not your tea, be aware of that--but it didn't bother me. It would be nice if halls lights dimmed at night so that when people come in at 4am it isn't so bright. Take earplugs and an eye mask. I mean, there is nothing staff can do about the many guests always coming through. It's just if you want a good night's sleep I wouldn't stay here. The showers are fine, hot water and mostly clean. There were contacts in one of the showers for four days so I don't know often they are cleaned. But I felt very safe and the location cannot be beat. Lots of great activities offered.

The décor is surprisingly elegant and classy, it's all dark oak and polished metal, but my one criticism of this place is it's size. I've never been a big believer in the whole 'good things come in small packages' thing, and this bar isn't exactly huge. In fact, the freestanding bar in the middle of the lower section takes up more room than anything else, but at the same time it makes it almost impossible to try and catch the bar staff's eye to get served. There are more tables upstairs which are great for people-watching, but the stairs are really steep which isn't a great combination when you're trying to get down them in 5 inch heels to buy the next round! Still worth a visit though.

But despite its surprisingly clean and well decorated interior nothing else made it stand out as a bar. It's central and affordable and won't break the bank. (Sorry!)
