The best hotel during this trip! Located in the city center of Edinburgh. Super close to a lot of attractions, restaurants and bus station. We got upgraded to the superior room which was located on the 6th floor with a view of the city. Huge bathroom, comfortable bed, comes with a fridge and a safe. On our floor there were just 4 rooms close by with 2 elevators. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Luggage storage is available for free. Breakfast was not included but if you want one it's £17 per person add on. I definitely recommend Ten Hill. It is a bit pricey but love this hotel. read more

Hotel in Scotland within walking distance to all the historic castles, bars and restaurants including the GrassMarket. Every staff member was super polite and after alot of fun chatter, they provided us with our room card and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. Service requests to our room immediately - nothing strange, just extra pillows, towels and a jug of ice water. Located on a side road for easy taxi access. A restaurant is offered inside the hotel lobby for a about 15£ a meal. In addition, a full liquor bar called Surgeons Quarter is open late and we took advantage quickly by sampling the Belhaven Black Scottish Stout Beer and ordering a Coffee with Irish Cream. We moved to the comfy modern lounge (Yes, I had Irish coffee in Scotland). The rooms were delightfully contemporary modern with a spotless bathroom and steaming hot water pressure. In this country, we did not have to leave the windows open since we had ice cold a/c. The only negative was the beds are mini kings and hard as oak. We both woke each morning with severe pain back pain and numb arms and shoulders. The wife had a beautiful wood desk for her makeup expedition every morning with ample lighting. We walked to the Black Medicine Coffee Company next door to fetch a needed jolt of coffee and a salmon cream cheese bagel. After eight countries in twenty days, this one is easily in my top two best for the location, ammenities, staff and cleanliness. Recommend this place to all in search of a stress free relaxing vacation. Except for the one issue with the evil beds, this hotel receives a strong 4.8 star rating. read more

Great location next to several coffee shops and retail stores. The hotel was elegant with a nice bar and seating inside but the immediate surrounding area was slightly scary at night. The room had cold air conditioning and sleek modern furniture but a rock hard bed, it was agonizing. The staff were around 24/7 and were helpful with dining recommendations. Room service for ANYTHING was quick. It was a ten minute walk to the grass market which was fun. Many bars with great food and people in booths selling jewelry and food. We highly recommend this hotel. Our rooms were upgraded and they were huge, with a very comfortable bed, nice sitting area, big closet and decent amenities. The bathroom was also spacious although the shower controls were a bit challenging to figure out at first but once we did, there was plenty of hot water and great pressure. The hotel was very clean and had Purell dispensers everywhere, including the elevators! Staff was professional and had complimentary luggage storage. We like that it's owned by the Surgeon's College and profits go to research. Its location is great as it's close to everything but on a quiet street. If we're lucky enough to visit beautiful Scotland again, we will definitely stay here. 10/10!! read more

A lot of what has been stated by the other guests is accurate. A beautiful hotel in an excellent location, around a 10-minute walk from the train station. Room, bed, shower were all fine. We didn't try the restaurant, but the hotel runs a cafe around the corner that sold coffee, pastry and sandwiches, perfect for the morning. My only issue was somehow being charged an extra $1500, meaning that two rooms for two couples for 3 nights cost us around 4 grand. And we got absolutely no satisfaction complaining, just a runaround. So just a word to the wise to watch how and where you book a room there and what it costs. We apparently are not alone, based on a conversation with a internationally known tour guide who recommended the place. read more

Really nice hotel in a bustling part of town! Our room and bathroom were really spacious and came equipped with usb chargers at both night stands, a safe and a mini fridge. The restaurant on the first floor was really busy, which is always a good sign so we sat at the bar for a drink and some dessert and the staff was super friendly. Definitely recommend the sticky toffee pudding! Plus they also do room service!! read more

I'm giving this hotel 5 stars for the people. Andrew at the bar is amazing. I am not a fan of whisky, or whiskey (gasp!), but he worked with me and came up with a great one where my lip did not curl and I enjoyed it. I also learned how to taste whisky, by adding water. He was a great teacher, as well as the rest of the bar staff. They all helped me in deciding what to do on a rainy day. Great people. The hotel was clean and in a central location. We enjoyed our stay with Ten Hill Place in early May of this year and it was an extraordinary experience. The rooms were so very comfortable and well appointed. The staff was exemplary as they seemed to anticipate our every need. The dining options were amazing and we were even able to celebrate my sister and brother-in-law's 20th wedding anniversary. We hated to leave and would happily recommend staying with this establishment as it is within walking distance of many wonderful sites as well as some excellent tours of the surrounding area. Ten Hill Place Hotel is adjacent to the Royal College of Surgeons complex on Nicholson Street, and is actually owned and run by the College. (Profits are used to the benefit of the College's work). Hill Place is just off Nicholson Street, and is a small, leafy square, which my room overlooked. I was staying on a package (£81 B&B) which was considerably below the rack rate, and for this I found it offered very good value for money. The area is not quite as swish as the New Town - you'll pass a few drunks and some odd looking characters (appalling dentistry seemed to be their characteristic) on the way, but it didn't feel threatening at all, even late at night. The hotel is actually a mix of a very modern new wing added to a traditional Georgian terrace, although the interiors are thoroughly modern. The public areas on the ground floor are economical: there is a single bar/lounge/dining area, and a separate reception at a higher level. The rooms are similarly modern, decorated in a safe but pleasant beige/brown style, with large gleaming white bathrooms. Mine was not terribly spacious, but was good enough. (It might feel a bit cramped for two after a few days, though). The rooms all have internet access for laptops and (for a fee) via the TV. (Note: the TV also lets you choose your own music, but you pay per album chosen, so be careful!) Mine was an accessible suite, so I had a large walk-in wet area shower, and the only drawback for me was having a low sink. But everything was very clean and comfortable, and the view over the square was lovely to wake up to. Although there is air conditioning, joy of joys - my traditional sash windows actually opened to let in fresh air! I didn't use room service, but the next day's breakfast was a perfectly fine, if standard, hot and cold buffet. Reception was also friendly, and reasonably efficient, although with space for only two staff I could imagine that a rush might slow things up. The only downside was that I could hear some noise from the adjacent room: plugs and switches being clicked and, in the morning, their conversation. This may have been because I had an adjoining room, but for a new refurbishment the soundproofing should have been better. That said, I'd happily stay there again at this price. read more

You'd hardly even notice that this hotel exists unless you were looking for it; it's nestled behind the Royal Colege of Surgeons just off Nicolson Street. That's one of the great things about it - it's in a really central location but it's not noisy like so many other city centre hotels. Aesthetically, the view from the outside probably won't blow you away. Think functional and minimalist, with lots of glass and metal. The rooms, on the other hand, were inviting and comfortable and bigger than you'd get in a lot of city centre places. If you're looking for somewhere nice to stay but aren't into all of the frills and faff of the bigger hotel chains (nobody's going to knock on your door and ask if you want your quilt turned down), then this is a great option. The receptionist told me it was built by the College of Surgeons, for people coming to meetings/conferences/exams etc so you can get an idea from that of what to expect. If you don't mind walking 5-10 minutes to the Royal Mile, and 10-15 minutes up to Princes Street, then I'd definitely recommend this place. read more

I stayed here at the start and end of my Scotland trip. Above-average hotel in a quiet location just a few blocks south of the Royal Mile, far enough away from the fray. It's not a lovely place; sort of modern blah style. Honestly, I didn't think much from the lobby when coming in but my room was much better; quiet, comfortable, with a large, clean bathroom and flatscreen TV; my second room was even better, about double the size and on a higher floor. There's no wi-fi in the rooms, but there is an ethernet cable and no charge for access; there is also free wi-fi in the cafe. A bit steep for what it is, but seems to be standard for Edinburgh. One small complaint: points off for not accommodating an early check-in. After a transatlantic flight involving grimy taxicabs, grimy airports, grimy public transport, grimy fellow travelers, and (if you're flying out of JFK), even some grimy pigeons, about the first thing I want is hot shower. I arrived at 10 a.m. and was told my room would be ready by 12:30 p.m. It wasn't. It wasn't ready when I checked back at 1:30. In fact, it wasn't ready until 3. Now, I know 3 is regular check-in time, but getting a room ready for a guest really isn't much of a challenge at most other hotels I've visited. read more

We had an excellent family trip requiring three different rooms and all were very nice very cozy and well-maintained. The bathrooms were quite luxurious by European standards. Everything was excellent from the comfort of the bed to the heated towel rack. Our family had breakfast together there every morning. I would encourage everyone to purchase the breakfast package when they make the reservation. The dining is excellent. We are particularly glad that they went out of their way to keep the child in our party satisfied. Location is excellent. Easy walking distance to tourist attractions and close to good shopping and good restaurants. As if you needed another reason to make this hotel your holiday location;it is owned by the Royal academy of surgeons and the profits go to help them do their missionary work. read more

The hotel itself is in a great location and situated a short walk from the royal mile and Edinburgh castle and the old town bits. For location this place gets 5 stars. The room were given on the other had did leave a bit to be desired. The bed was not great and sunk in the middle a bit. Never a great thing when you are trying to share a double bed. The bar was backing onto our room so you could hear the piano player all evening. Don't get me wrong I do love piano but not for an entire evening :-) The staff were friendly and the check on process was relatively straightforward. The wifi was ok but very slow. All in all an ok place but value for money was lacking for me. Hopefully if I come back here again I might get a different experience. read more

The tea served here is delicious. The restaurant here for dinner is also very good! I loved dessert of salted Caramel mouse and the braised ox cheek. The hotel is owwned by Edinburgh University but is a long way off student digs of old with the Uni venturing into the hotel market for the first time. Its a contemporary style 4 star Hotel and offers complimentary Wi-Fi throughout all bedrooms and public spaces. Each rooms has a sleek bathroom, a flat-screen TV with freeview channels, king or super-king beds and on the top floor, the four Sky-line rooms include an exercise bike, a mini fridge, towelling robes and slippers. (we asked for a look round!) We had food in their wine bar which also a Sunday carvery. The menu is a little limited but excellent-value, brasserie-style menu: £12.95 for two courses, £14.95 for three courses. I totally agree with Fiona H, you would never know this place was here unless you went looking for it! But once you've found it - you've struck gold! It's one of the better places in Edinburgh to stay in, it's quiet, it's trendy enough and it's central! If you know Edinburgh, it's a good place to stay. Because of its location, in Newington, if you don't know the city then you'll end up spending quite a bit of money on taxi's, when it's a perfectly nice 15 min walk from the city centre. Have a look online, there is usually a decent deal on for weekend breaks. The concierge in here is brilliant too - my mum came here once and asked the concierge to surprise her and she had the best day ever - they organised a city tour (she didn't have the heart to tell them she always comes to Edinburgh) and a nice dinner! lovely! read more

We managed to get a room here from one of those 'Oops, we've left it a bit late!'- type websites and compared to how much other, similar style hotels cost in this vicinity I think we got a really good deal. It took us a wee while, with some shouting at Google Maps, to find the place but as soon as we figured out where it was in relation to places we've been to before (I recognised Elephants & Bagels nearby) it was a pretty good location. Just off a main road and therefore both quiet and handy for getting about. It's about a brisk 15 minute walk here from Waverley Station. Our (Double) room was situated on the 2nd floor and was very peaceful and a really good size. Nice, Kingsize bed with a 2 nice, comfy pillows, cushions & a really cool headboard, a desk, 2 chairs, a huge wardrobe/cupboard and a lovely, spacious bathroom. Only thing we thought was a bit not in keeping with the feel/quality of the room was the rather small TV. I guess some people aren't as bothered but we felt for what was quite a large room the TV was maybe a tad too wee. Besides the wee tele I cannot fault the room we had but I must say the service could do with improving...when we checked in the guy at reception didn't seem to understand the name we were booked under (it's not a totally unusual/uncommon name) and kept saying other names like we DIDN'T KNOW OUR OWN FREAKING NAME! Sheesh...he was quite rude about it to; did not crack one smile to us, even when he finally found our details (eventually). We also had to pay a £25 'safety deposit' on our room as we were only staying the 1 night...I've never heard of this before and it did make us feel a bit as though they didn't trust us. Hmph. If the room hadn't been so lovely then this would be a 3 star review but as I said our room was really nice. The bathroom, complete with lovely Arran Aromatics toiletries, was really nice & so big compared to the usual size of hotel bathrooms. Free WiFi (when you register) and also tea/coffee making facilities made this particular hotel room a 4 stars. I can't comment on their breakfast as we noticed it was nearly £15, ouch! No ta. Would I stay again? If I could get a good deal again then yes, I would definately stay again. They maybe just need to have a word with some of their reception staff...we may not look like your average guest (lots of people come here I guess for the fancy wine bar/brasserie) but that doesn't mean we're going to wreck your rooms/hotel! read more

Popped in here on Sat night for a quick bite to eat pre-threatre. The service was a quite slow despite the bar not being busy and it took a wee while for the waitress to take our order and then for the food to arrive. We ended up having to eat it in about 5 mins to make the theatre in time. We opted for the tapas menu and shared 6 dishes between us. It was just the right amount: Chicken skewers; Beef pie; crispy potatoes; chicken/haggis ballotine; mushrooms on toast; and lamb meatballs. It was nice and reaonably priced: £5 for one dish; £13 for three or £20 for 5. There was a good selection of options & we cleared our plates. I would go back . They accept tastecard in the bar so we did the £13. Even if we weren't using the tastecard I'd say it is good value for money. It's a definite spot worth knowing about if you are going to the Festival Theatre round the corner. The hotel is run by the Royal College of Surgeons, and the money is reinvested into the College so it's for a good cause too : ) but not if I was in a rush. read more

Service in the brasserie was attentive but just noticeably slow between placing our food order and it arriving. Presentation of the dishes was of a good standard though and none of the 7 of us had any complaints about the quality of the food. The Scottish charcuterie platter can easily feed just one person rather than be shared. Pint prices although of the hotel variety are not, in the main, worse than many other city centre establishments. read more

This hotel is located in the Old Town, very close to the Royal Mile. It's central location is its main argument for staying here. The hotel is a business style hotel. The double room offers sufficient space while the bathroom is quite big. My first impression was that this would be the best choice. However, now that I had a more detailed view, I have been surprised by many negative details in contrast to the room's price. The bed is too soft, and there are plastic-hard buttons on its surface (under the linen). The night was a bit uncomfortable, but would have been okay for a lower standard. The room wasn't cleaned properly. When we arrived, we found lots of dirty spots, and after the room was cleaned in the morning our towels (left in the bath tub) were not changed, an empty bottle that we left behind was not removed, no replacements for used bath utilities, etc ... Minor: There are lots of things in the room that have been attached awry, e.g. the bathroom's handle or the towel heater. There is no toilet brush available which makes sharing the bath a bit uncomfortable... you understand. Internet: Free WiFi in the lobby, free cable based internet in the rooms. I didn't need to buy a cable for the room, its was provided free of charge. All in all: If the room cleaning would be better, I would recommend this hotel to friends. read more

Ten Hill Place is a lovely hotel, I stayed for just one night, my room was not as big as sugested on the website, but maybe other rooms were bigger, still it was clean and comfortable. We didn't eat in the resaurant as we overheard a diner complaining that there was meat in her vegetarian dish, however we did have breakfast which was great. Downside for me was the bar is really expensive, 2 white wines and a martini & lemonade came in at £23.30 so I'm glad we just had the one round. I booked with laterooms and got a fairly good rate and would stay again if the rate was good. However I will make sure though that I have a bottle of wine in my case next time. read more
