It's all built around Sheridan Street, which is sort of the main street. Here, you'll find all the best bars, restaurants, shopping, art galleries- all the finer things that this town has to offer. On the outskirts of town, be sure to check out the Cody Stampede Rodeo, which goes on nightly throughout much of the year. This town really is the center of the Wyoming Cowboy universe. There's so much fun stuff to do. You can spend a whole day bouncing from whiskey bar to beer bar. The center of the town is the Irma Hotel, founded by, you guessed it- Buffalo Bill himself. This place is worth checking out for the interior decor and the bar that was gifted to the hotel from the Queen of England. Be sure to see the free public restroom in the center of town. It was locked when I went. The Buffalo Bill Cody Center for the West is one of the most significant and wonderful western art museums I've ever been in, and probably has more guns than most armories. The City of Cody does a great job of promoting itself. I emailed the city, and their offices on Sheridan Street sent out a sharp-looking packet of info which sealed the deal to get me to come visit! The shopping here is great- a mix of western wear and whiskey and breweries. Be sure to take a saunter down Sheridan Street.

I'm surprised no one has written a review just about the charming city of Cody, Wyoming? Well, here…read moreI am taking a moment to explain why I enjoyed visiting Cody and what's here and within the area to explore. I came to Cody back over the summertime. I was spending about half the day and evening here before venturing north for 63 miles to Red Lodge, Montana to start one of the most historic drives in the United States known as Beartooth Highway. So for me being in Cody, it was a good resting stop along my journey. I was surprised to discover that Cody is a quaint little old fashioned mountain town! Just strolling up and down Main Street was fun. There were all sorts of gift shops, restaurants with outdoor seating, and general stores to browse through. In fact, I actually stopped at the Cody Visitors Center where a real friendly lady assisted and offered me worthwhile ideas for activities to do and sights to see around town. I would certainly recommend when driving into Cody, making a point to stop at the Visitors Center for brochures and entertainment. I didn't know this...at the Visitors Center the girl talking with me explained that Cody is sort of the beginning for plenty of tourist's adventures into Yellowstone National Park. I was actually unaware of this. Situated 52 miles away, plenty of folks start out here in Cody before heading to Yellowstone. Although I have already visited Yellowstone coming from the Salt Lake City, Utah area...for me being here in Cody was to primarily drive Beartooth Highway...which had been on my to-do list for a while. For those people out there interested in navigating Beartooth Highway...I'll quickly explain that Beartooth Highway starts 63 miles from north of Cody in Red Lodge and then continues for 68 miles ending in Cooke City - Silver Gate, Montana. Along the way Beartooth Highway offers some pretty memorable stops to get out of your car and appreciate the surroundings. Then Cooke City - Silver Gate is the entrance to the eastern section of Yellowstone, simply 5 miles away! For those tourists who'd admire the more scenic route to Yellowstone rather than heading west on Highway 14 to Yellowstone, I'd suggest this route that I traversed... 1. Cody to Red Lodge. 2. Red Lodge - 68 miles along Beartooth Highway to Cooke City - Silver Gate. 3. Cooke City - Silver Gate - 5 miles into Yellowstone. One word of caution...if you're not interested in exploring Yellowstone then there's no point in driving Beartooth Highway. Because...from Cooke City - Silver Gate you have no choice other than to enter Yellowstone or you'd have to turn around and trek back the 68 miles where you originally came from. And I'll admit...I didn't know this when I completed Beartooth Highway so I was forced to drive 57 miles through Yellowstone to eventually exit the park in Gardiner, Montana. But luckily I did get to encounter bison on the road along the way! But...back to Cody. I'd like to point out some worthwhile moments to hanging out in this classic mountain town setting. From June through September, Monday through Saturday, at the historic Irma Hotel at 6pm they feature a vintage cowboy reenactment and gunfight. It's called, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid's - WILD BUNCH GUNFIGHT. It's free to stand and watch the reenactment or you can pay $3 per person and sit down in a chair for a front row seat of the entertainment. Lol, I splurged the $3 to sit down. And if you're interested, the Irma Hotel has server's walking around if you'd like food or a cocktail while watching the gunfight. It's a great way to immerse yourself in the heart of the great ole west and part of Cody mystique. I liked the show and bought a drink. The Yellowstone Gift Shop is located right along Main Street and has a variety of souvenirs to grab any memorable items from Cody. I bought a few chachkies here for my stash at home and they were selling $5 t-shirts as well. Although I didn't have time for this, the lady at the Visitors Center mentioned I could drive just outside Cody and attend a rodeo. Cool! Right up my alley unfortunately I just didn't have the time since I arrived here on a whim. Had I been staying longer, I would have been very interested in hanging out and watching rodeos with cowboys and horses making up the wild, wild west! A couple of extras... - I had dinner at a Chinese buffet called - China Town. During this pandemic you walk around the buffet and a server plates your food. You simply tell them what you'd like. For a Chinese buffet, the food was good here. I believe it was $15 for all you can eat...an affordable deal for being in this touristy town of Cody. - I spent the evening at Ponderosa Campground. For those people who appreciate renting a cabin or pitching a tent, Ponderosa Campground was a nice setting. I spent $31 w/ AAA discount for a primitive campsite and had access to the showers. Since I have no more room, I'd lastly like to say Cody is a fun, worthwhile mountain town to visit!
