The fish is good quality but the chips are often overcooked. The food is also quite expensive for what it is

It was quite busy when I popped in in the early evening, which I always think is a good sign. I did not have to wait too long though. We just ordered two cod and chips and were soon on our way home. The service was good and the staff were busy, so there was not much time for chit chat. The prices were not too bad either. When we finally got round to eating our food, it was good, still hot and very tasty. I think it is hard for anywhere to do bad fish and chips, but some places can make the chips a little silly. No soggy chips here though and overall, me and my friend were very pleased with our dinner!

Well, when it arrived, it was piping hot, loads of mushy peas, the chips were perfect, and the fish ( which was quite big ) was absolutely wonderful. I have never tasted batter quite like this. This 'mini ' meal filled me up so much so that although I ate all of the fish, I very reluctantly left a few of the delicious chips. we chose to eat in, which was fine, and together we made the decision that we will certainly be returning here every two or three weeks. To sum up , PERFECTION.

The staff are usually chatty and if you're a regular, like I used to, they like get to know you. Isn't that nice? The prices are what you'd expect for a normal chip shop; approximately two pounds for a pie, two to four pounds for chips (depending on your portion) and a pound for a drink. With Oceans, they are convenient for me if I'm getting into Birmingham city centre and on my way to the office in Digbeth. I go past it nearly every other day, so if I'm running late and its lunch time; sometimes I do pop in and buy my favourite- the 5 hot wings and chips (includes a drink) for £2.50!! The hot wings from Oceans are lovely. As a fan of hot wings, usually KFC ones, I know the difference between tasty chicken and not so tasty chicken- it's my speciality. They do have a lot of meal deals in Oceans, really cost effective for students and for those on a budget. It's great to know that £2.50 can still buy you a meal which includes a drink as well. Their kebabs are also delicious. If I'm feeling like having something different, I do have the kebab meal; however this is £3.50 instead.

The Cranmore Fish Bar is by far the top of my list, the best most enjoyable fish and chips I have ever tasted and the quality rarely varies from excellent. I have been popping in here now for many years and I can only say the quality has improved with the passing of years. The young man who fries the fish here is a virtuoso master of the art, his batter is light and delicious and enhances the flavour of the fish rather than drown it as can so often be the case. But the secret is not just in the frying, the fish itself is always thick cut, succulent and meaty. What nails it as the perfect chippy is that it qualifies as an ideal "just off" in that I mean it is a great alternative to the Motorway services. Being just off Junction 4 of the M42 and close by a Tesco petrol station it is the wallet healthy alternative to the overpriced motorway services. I recommend the small fish and chips deal as the ideal meal, the large fish is very large indeed. Try it and let me know if you know better.

There is another chip shop opposite which means Hill Top Fish Bar does have competition. If I'm being brutally honest it is Hill Top Fish Bar all the way for me. There have been times where I have found the chips a little too salty as well as the fish being on the greasy side but that is me being fussy. I am not someone who often has gravy with my chips. They offer meal deals on certain combinations - such as a Mini Fish and Chips + Mushy Peas (or Curry Sauce) for a fairly reasonable £2.50 - which represent a good feed for a small price. I would avoid going later than 10pm as they tend to wind down the operation around then (fairly understandable!) and so nothing new gets cooked. All in all a pretty good local fish and chip shop!
