Their new location in South Preston is handy for Thornbury locals, sounds confusing but Google Map it. Known for their cheap "non-perishable" goods, you can pick up pasta and tinned tomatoes for 69 cents each, seasonal produce at lower than supermarket prices, boxed wine for $8.99 and home wares. They are currently selling 'fog machines' for $30 just to give you an idea of their random range. One reservation is their bulk meat packaging. Buying two kilos of mince is handy for the weekly family size shop but not always for myself. Its a cheap supermarket, stop whining. Did I mention $8.99 boxed wine?

Although a small store they provide the 'necessities' for a gourmet quick meal. I found the prices to be very good for a store of this type. Yes, you are going to pay $45 a kg for meat but, prices appear to be about 10% cheaper than gourmet grocers like Broadbean, Passion Foods and Essential Ingredient. Gum Tree is a great one stop shop for the time poor local resident who can make it to South Melbourne Market, with the added bonus of Toby's Estate coffee served while you shop. It has a big range and is a viable alternative to the nearby Woolworths supermarket for most things plus flowers. The quality of some produce has gone down tho since the last extension and the price gone up. The potatoes and pumpkin used to be excellent and several other items used to be excellent but are now no better than Woolworths supermarket. One or two items tho remain better. The cliental is varied but the people sometimes hold the queue up while they decide to do more shopping. the queues can get very long. Don't be in a hurry if you go there. Some fellow purchases are a bit impatient too and will nudge there way with the flowers or trolleys etc while your being served. I have started to go to the Prahran market instead of late and am tending to move away from toscano's altogether for the above reasons.

European branded Nutri-Grain will only set you back a couple bucks instead of $7 or $8 (What are they actually thinking? It's cereal god-dammit!), so invest a visit to ALDI. You actually collect your items from the very crates and boxes they are delivered in. Only downside is they dont sell tofu and vegan products, but hey, I'm happy to walk out of their with whatever i can. Saves me a fortune every week!
