I declined because Economy Rent A Car's website advertised insurance coverage for $9 per day, and I planned to purchase it directly from the rental company when I picked up the vehicle. When I arrived, I was told that the previously advertised coverage was no longer available. Instead, I was informed that if I wanted the midsize SUV I had reserved, I would have to purchase their insurance for $580 for the week, in addition to the cost of the rental. I spent approximately 2.5 hours at the rental location trying to resolve the issue. Eventually, they agreed to provide me with a compact car instead of the reserved SUV, with insurance costing $233 for the week. While this worked out to about $33 per day, it was still significantly more than the $9 per day coverage advertised on their website. The rental agent, Estefany, told me that the insurance pricing was at their discretion once customers arrived at the counter. After I agreed to pay the $233 for the insurance, Estefany said she would only honor that price if I opened the Expedia email on my phone and submitted a positive review of my experience before she would hand me the car keys. I told her I would be happy to leave a review after I left, based on my experience. She refused and insisted that I post a positive review immediately, while standing at the counter, before she would release the vehicle. I felt pressured since I was effectively required to leave a positive review in order to receive the rental car I had already reserved.

When we arrived to pick up the vehicle, they refused to accept the insurance we already paid for and tried charging us an additional $1,500 for their own insurance coverage. At that point, we were basically left with no option because canceling would mean losing the $900 we already paid. This feels extremely misleading and unfair. Customers should be clearly told ahead of time that third-party insurance may not be accepted instead of being pressured into paying outrageous extra fees at pickup. Very disappointing experience and felt like a complete scam.

The experience here was so bad I wish I could provide negative stars. National car rental has less…read morethan mediocre service and no integrity. I made the reservation with insurance from Alaska airlines and upon arrival they offered me a smaller car plus wanted to charge for insurance which I prepaid from reservation in the US. The amount for one week of insurance was 633 dollars on top of my reservation and getting a smaller car. I ended up catching a cab as the terrible service and increase costs made it more cost effective and easier to request a cab or rent a limo for the week. I recommend staying away as they want to steal your money. Please note that for 600 it only covers the other parties car! I am disappointed of this and will contact national and Alaska in the USA!
