Our kids had outgrown the bunks we purchased when they were very small, so I looked for something more solid and that could also be customized for height. We ordered online from College Bed Lofts, and I was able to set the bunk platforms at unusually low heights, giving both the top and bottom sleepers much more headroom. Note: It is VERY hard to find this customization ability anywhere else. We had the bunks delivered to a cabin, which required some timing sync with the shipment. Don at CBL was super helpful in making this happen, including working with us when FedEx messed up the delivery date. He was extremely responsive. None of this matters if the bunks aren't well-built. They are. I was pleasantly surprised at how solid these are. An adult can easily climb up there without any creaking or swaying. These things are built to last and built to carry weight. They are also surprisingly easy to put together, much easier than the previous beds we had. Overall, this was a top notch experience. Major ability to customize, flexible and responsive customer service, and very high quality beds -- at a reasonable price. Ordered online to ship to AZ. Ordered custom twin xl over twin xl, hd ladder, slatted headboards, double safety rail, double shelves upper and lower, corner and rung braces. Decided to go with "rush" processing, which was estimated at one week but got a notification it had shipped less than 5 days later (totally worth the rush charge). Shipping took just about the estimated time and could track all the way to the door! Setup is a little more complicated than IKEA furniture, but this is also not IKEA - meaning, it's built to last, not built out of pressed sawdust and cheap veneer. This bed feels bombproof and solid, everything is sturdy and heavy and well designed. If you're not sure of your ability to assemble, I would get outside help. A basic bunk bed with no extras probably wouldn't be terribly tough, but every option you add takes a little bit of guesstimation and decisiveness on "just doing what fits". I didn't want the ladder where the indicated spot was, same with the bottom shelves and the corner/rung braces - so I improvised - which is great because you can do that with this bed, but if you're expecting a step by step walkthrough of place piece A into piece B and screw together with Allen wrench - it's a little more involved than that. I live across the country in Los Angeles and for a while shared a bedroom with a roommate. I was looking for a way to save on space, so a loft was the option. I took a look at places like Ikea and found only flimsy answers. When I looked on Google images for some ideas, I found some great-looking lofts made from College Bed Lofts. It didn't take me long from their reviews to see that this was good quality. I made my order. When it arrived it came in about five boxes (and seemingly 100 pounds) of wood. I was nervous, seeing the dozens of pieces! It was going to be a much larger job than I thought. But with the help of a friend, and carefully following their instructions online, we had a loft up in a couple of days. One of the pieces was particularly warped (I think the cross-country trip + California dryness affected it), but after force-drilling it into place the loft was still SOLID AS A ROCK, and I didn't worry at all. I've had it for 1.5 years now, and it's great. I ended up getting rid of the entire headboard because it was cumbersome, plus its shelf was a wee bit too close to my face when I slept. When I reassembled the loft in a new apartment one of the 15 mattress baseboards broke (one of my friends was sitting on the loft sans mattress). But when I contacted them they happily offered to ship me a new board. Woo! Lifetime guarantee, dudes. Professional and good quality. I described the size of my footprint and the maximum height and the cost and dimensions were quickly calculated. Our shipment arrived truly end of day so waiting around the house all day for FedEx wasn't fun, but that isn't an issue for CBL to fix. There was a shipping mix up, but Don reacted quickly and sent the missing pieces out as requested @ no charge. The full size bunk beds were super easy to put together! We purchased custom double bunks (TwinXL/Twin XL and Twin XL/Queen). Could not be happier with our purchase. Fits our space perfectly and we plan to have our adult kids use top bunks. It's hard to find bunk beds for adults and these are SOLID! No worries about my 6'4'' son sleeping on top bunk. It was intimidating to get the enormous amounts of wood but I found it very easy to put together with just me and my daughter in about 2 hours (for both bunks). Staining was another challenge altogether. It took quite a while (few days) but it was worth it. The only recommendation I have different from the company is to use regular stain first then poly afterwards. The blended polyshades the company recommends are unforgiving and even small drips will show much more than a clear poly over regular stain. This will add one more step to the process but more likely to get a better finish. Customer service is phenomenal with this company. They were patient with us when we kept tweaking the design before ordering. When we put it together we were not 100% happy with the ladder being very steep so they sent another ladder/stairs. We live in a really small apartment. I purchased this for my five year old daughter so that she could have more room in her small bedroom. I don't write many reviews, but I felt this was necessary (I rely on others reviews when I make purchases). Don the customer service guy was really helpful when I made the purchase. First of all my daughter loves the loft! I love it too! I especially love the fact that we both can sleep up there! It was just super complicated to put together. The directions are really long and confusing. When the pieces of wood come in the mail via FedEx there came in many heavy boxes. Did I say a lot of pieces! Whoa! My husband and I are by all means not fix-it type people, but I do know how to use a drill and a wrench (required tools)! It literally took us a few days to put it together. We took a few breaks from yelling at each other and sweating from lifting the damn thing! I did regret purchasing it a few times as we were building it and wished we went to IKEA for an easier return if necessary. Not to mention, I needed a few Tylenol afterwards from aches and pains! I would also say for the price (pretty expensive) it should be stained. I am dreading taking it down to paint or stain it! I hope their Lifetime Guarantee is not as confusing as building the loft...probably will be though. read more
