Excellent follow-through after leaving my cell number. They emailed quotes almost immediately after coming over to see the two (2) jobs: (1) "Spring Cleanup" and (2) Weekly Lawn Cutting. Were patient with me-I didn't see the request to respond to the two pdf files they sent. Worked with me to have an 'almost next-day' appointment. Three (3) men came, dedicated to getting the job done. Actually, I was impressed with their work ethic, impressed with their attention to detail, and impressed with all aspects of their excellent service! I am receiving nothing for this review. However, I got excellent service and that is worth a lot these days. By the way, if you find their work problematic, I'd recommend giving a call to the office. They seem responsive and caring. We are so happy and amazed at how CSL transformed our back and front yard into the most amazing spaces! From my first call about scheduling an estimate, to the last bit of mulch set down, was seamless. Requested spring clean up and gutter cleaning. They arrived on time. I asked if they would get the leaves under the deck and I was told yes. One guy had a leaf blower other 2 guys rakes. After an hour and a half the guy came to the door with the bill. I gave them a check and a $60 tip. Later on I was able to check the work. All the decks were loaded with leaves and my wife's flowers were all blown over and ruined for the season. My neighbors had debris blown onto their property, but luckily I get along with them. My neighbor went on my roof to check gutters. He said leaves were still inside and blocking some spouts. We called and left a message. Received an email stating we should have checked the work before paying. Apparently the terrible work was my fault for trusting them. After all their website states they are trustworthy. Needless to say we canceled an estimate for mulch and rocks and will not consider them for weekly mowing. Also workers were on their phones often via review of my cameras after the fact. read more

It normally takes me about 2 hours to cut my own grass. As I'm getting older, I reached out to College Students Landscaping for a quote. I was pleasantly surprised that they were within range of what I was hoping. Week 1 the back half of my backyard had standing water. I understood why that area was not cut. It took them about 30 minutes to cut & edge what they did. I was pleased with the job. Week 2 (Thursday) they cut the same area as week 1. I was a bit surprised because the standing water was gone. I was pleased with the area they did cut, and I cut the area they didn't cut on Saturday with my riding mower. Week 3 (Thursday) they again cut the same area they had previously cut even though the back half of the back yard was dry. Plus, there were partial rows that were not cut in the area that was cut. I cannot figure out how they could have missed the uncut rows. I called and left a message asking how they determined my property size. She told me to send an email and pictures so the crew chief could review them. I did. I fully expected them to show up Friday to cut the half of the back yard they were missing and correct the sloppy cut they did where they did cut. They did not. I cut the back half of my backyard on Saturday. I received an email from them Sunday evening that they would cut the entire yard when they returned the following Thursday. That is telling me I would need to recut the sloppy cut they did. My request for a credit for the sloppy work and uncut area was not acknowledged. I guess their goal of 100% customer satisfaction has no meaning. There were a few emails that went back and forth, and they would not take responsibility. After communicating the problems with them, per their agreement, they wanted me to communicate the mistakes with their crew. That's their job. I cancelled the service. It is unfortunate because I thought it was a great idea for college kids during the summer. read more

College Students Landscaping mowed our lawn on June 1 and June 8 2022 and damaged our new gate, which cannot be repaired. We are out money for the replacement of a new gate. Never have we had any issue with mowers or weed Wackers until using, CSL!!! Said they weren't responsible as it was in there acceptace contact. Poor customer service as they were too irresponsible to even advise of the damage done to our property. Our new service uses a bigger lawnmower and has no issues, causes no damage, weed Wacks cleaner, and doesn't get grass everywhere. read more

We hired CSL to do some clean up of weeds and overgrown bushes and to shorten our garden and backfill it with sod. We told them about a party we were having and requested if they could slip us into their schedule. They were great about making sure they did the work before the party. They did a really good job, but the sod was brown in some spots. This was caused by the very high temperatures and some parts were "sun burned". I heavily watered it but those parts did not come back. I sent a picture to Randy and they sent out a crew about a week later to replace the sod. We have used CSL a few times over the last 10 years. My first impression as a new customer is below average. This involves both their administrative handling and the actual quality of their mowing. What the office indicated over the phone, with assurances, was completely contradicted by a different person in their office via email. Their first service demonstrated uneven cuts in the area of overlapping mower passes, leaving my grass 2-inches taller than the non-overlapping areas. Tall grass along the edges of my curb was not weed whacked, left at 4.5-inch tall, while the remaining area was cut. I had to weed whack the curb after they left. When they rotated their mower 180 degrees, it cut the area underneath the unit to a very low elevation. One can now see a circle on my lawn, similar to a crop circle. As for their claim on their site that they take their time mowing, unlike other services, I found it to be untrue. Their mower was literally streaking across my lawn like any other service I have had in the past. The objective was clear, to complete the job as quickly as possible and leave. Quality of work was apparently not a priority. In terms of cost, do not let the College Student bit lead you to think they are less costly than a Professional service. They have the same price as my previous professional service. All said, I will give them another shot next week to determine whether they had a one-off at their first attempt at mowing my lawn. If the same low-quality cut is achieved, I will be forced to cancel and return to my previous mowing service. read more

Broke several things at my house after several occurances. Taking 0 ownership saying its in contract they arent responsible for damage. They said my 4 year old gate is old is why its broken not that the ram it in a weekly basis. These guys came out in 2 days notice to clean up a dumpster full of leaves. Prices are competitive with other landscapers I called but so much better at replying and communicating. I used these guys for 2 years. Last week I called to let them know that no one had been out to cut my lawn. I sent pictures and was told 1) I waited to long to complain. 2) the Pictures were not proof. They came out this week and I talked to one of the mowers and he agreed with me that my lawn had not been cut he texted and called the owner. Today I was told that I spoke with the wrong person and not the team leader. They insisted they were out last week at 11:36am. Mind you my wife is working from home and my mother in law was home. This was a terrible choice! Beware! They cut my lawn terribly, missing spots, and not trimming like the contract stated, they also left dead grass all over the lawn like they were in a hurry. I asked them to send a supervisor out to view the poor job and the girl paused and then hung up on me. When I cancelled after the first cut they sent me a full bill when I asked for a reduced bill due to the poor service they said "No" and told me to "do what I had to do". All I was looking for was a slight discount after all they did come out. Customer service at this company would be better served by a monkey at the zoo. I talked to an adult who had a worse customer service sense than the kids working there. Somehow she justified a bad job and a full bill with the price of gas. So if you don't mind a bad job because gas is almost $5.00 a gallon then go with this company. Terrible terrible service and customer service that is incapable of nothing more than billing. If there was a negative star this Company would get it. They are not even remotely "landscapers." They can mow a lawn, but that is about it -- and that is done quite carelessly--strips of grass missed, edges poorly trimmed, etc. The trimming of our actual landscaping was horrible. Bushes were literally trimmed down to bare branches. I would have attached pictures if I could. All the new spring growth was cut down and is gone. I hope their insurance is current because they will be replacing these full grown bushes if they do not grow back. Our town home HOA contracted this company because the owner is the brother of one of the HOA board members. Nepotism at its best. Do not use this company if you care about the aesthetics of your home, and your landscaping investment. read more

These students really tore up my lawn this year. Their heavy lawn mowers dug ruts into several areas of my lawn because they mowed right after it rained several times. Many areas are dead and barren. When I complained about this, including pictures, they blamed it on me, saying that I should have called them off if the lawn was too wet. Well, I hired these guys because I travel on business frequently - how am I supposed to know if it's too wet when I'm 1,000 miles away? You would think a college student could figure that out on his own. I won't be using their services again. read more

It is now 2014 and I am still with them. My only complaint is I wish they would allow electronic payment. I very rarely write a check. In fact I think this is the only place I write one. I use electronic payment or Credit Card. They accept credit cards but charge a fee for this. Once in a great while something is missed or once they forgot to blow the grass off the patio. I took a picture and sent it to Randy and it never happend again. No place is 100% all the time. But College Students is pretty darn close. read more

Wish i would of read the reviews ! they were in a hurry cleaned a minimum amount the street looked awful were they off loaded material couldn't use a rake to get mulch out of my parkway , screed material left on street could of used a blower to clean it up, just half ass for full price really. They need to adjust there business model no quality control then i come to find out i had 2 team leads present for the first day oh it showed, couldn't operate hose i guess not in the contract or scope of work. hardscape or brick work was average at best not ready to throw the level on in yet but incomplete.I'll let you know how i really feel when I get done picking up the cigarette butts. read more

I used CSL to have my bushes and small trees around the house trimmed, and also to have my flower beds weeded, and have the edges/borders of them re-defined. They did a great job for me. One crew finished the trimming, and a few hours later in the afternoon, another crew returned for the work in the flower beds. It was getting late in the day, and I could hear them outside talking about how they wouldn't get the job done by the end of the day (which I didn't think they would either). 20 minutes later, I looked out my window, and 5 more guys had showed up to help them keep working, and they finished in record time, and cleaned up nicely. I feel like college students landscaping is a part of my family. They cut my parents lawns throughout my high school and college years because I was too busy with sports or not living at home. When I bought my first house, my parent paid for college students landscaping to cut my grass as a house warming gift/wedding gift. Now that my parents have cut me off, I just signed up myself to keep college students landscaping cutting my grass. A smile comes to my face every time I come home from work and my lawn was just cut. Everything looks perfect. I find myself looking out into the yard trying to figure out how they get their lines so straight in such a short amount of time. We have been in the house 14 years and the landscaping needed a makeover. I've used College Students for my lawn service since 2005. So I asked them for a quote. Randy came out and I showed him what I wanted and he had some suggestions about saving money since we are leaving Illinois in 3 years. I called two other companies for a quote. one never responded and the other after the second rescheduling I said no. I got the quote from CS and it was about 1/2 what I was expecting. Do not hire this company. We thought we would hire someone to help us with simple lawn cutting service, and the college kids sounded perfect. We have a home that is approx 9 yrs old and had brand new lawn laid after it was built in 2004. This college landscaping company located in Oak Forest, IL contaminated our lawn with 'horrible rag weed', our lawn also started looking like someone was having fun driving an SUV over the grass with horrible tire treads that were left after they attempted to cut the grass while it was raining. Not only was our lawn covered with rag weed (they apperantely were cutting a field somewhere) and neglected to wash the cutting blades, because our lawn is connected to our neighbors, his lawn became infested as well. We were so embarassed. My husband called the company and requested a credit to the bill and to stop service as it was horrible. They sent the bill to collections and we disputed it again reqesting to come to some type of agreement. We have not heard from them in a year. We thought they had remorse and cancelled the bill. Today February 6th 2012, I saw a letter taped to my front door. Guess from who? College kids landscaping requesting the full amount due, or and get this........they researched my property index number and is not threating to put a LIEN on our home if the bill is not paid. Well, I called them, becuase scare tactics don't work with me. I contacted the 'Better Business burea in Chicago' and filed a complaint. I also emailed the customer service person at College Kids landscaping to make them aware that my next step is to file a complaint with the 'States Attorneys office'. It's not about the money, it's about people providing bad service, destroying your property and than 'threating' you to pay them in full. I did not even mentions that they destroyed 2 of my kids pools, which I called them about, and a couple of thier summers balls that were destroyed by the mowing machine. Beware don't do business with these folks. CSL didn't want to take ownership of a window they cracked while cutting my grass. You'd think after 8+ years of servicing a property they would jump to cover the expense of a window they broke. They tossed our business to the side for a measly window that wouldn't have cost more than $100 to repair. Doesn't seem like good business sense to me. On one Monday, while they cut our yard, my wife heard an object strike our front window, when she looked she didn't see the damage. Later in the week I spotted the small crack. The crack was absolutely consistent and displayed all the hallmarks of a small rock/object hitting the window at a high rate of speed. We called them and they took photos the following week while cutting. A few days later, they told us they didn't want to pay because they claimed that they bagged the grass (which they weren't bagging). Even if they were bagging does that mean that the mower sucks up 100% of all debris? No, it doesn't. It's a lie. Plus there are rocks in the yard right in front of the window. They kept telling us they didn't see how their equipment could do that. Then they claimed they couldn't cover the window because their insurance wouldn't cover them for the damage, which is an unacceptable excuse. Those were the only two reasons they denied to repair the window. The broken window is between the customer and CSL, not the insurance company. So essentially they avoided the blame for breaking the window and lost a long standing customer. We're renting this property and we've used them for 2 seasons (approx. $1200), my landlord says they've been servicing the property for 8 years or more. My landlord referred them. I don't know what their issue was, but my wife, myself, and our two girls, 1 and 4 y/o, don't go around throwing rocks at each other in the front of our house. I never complained about their employees cutting my yard shirtless or mowing over my solar path lights, which is very irritating. I never seen that with other landscapers. When talking to my next landscaper about it, he told me breaking windows is essentially an unavoidable consequence of the business. Also done some google searching and found its pretty common as well. So sorry to hear that. Never would've thought they would react in such a way. read more

Then one day there was a new kid using the weed whacker and he tore up the siding all around our garage. The company claims they are not responsible since the one-page "Agreement" we signed states: "We are not responsible for any damage done to objects, within your lawn, not protected by landscaping from the weed wacker whip or lawn mowers." I hardly think my garage is an "object" within my lawn - it's not a birdbath or a lawn ornament. They will not accept responsibility for the damage done, so we are stuck with the cost of replacing the siding on our garage. When they cut my grass they made a mess, broke landscaping lights (which they never fixed) and when I had plants put in and died they did not replace. I wish I could put ZERO stars. I've NEVER been treated so poorly as a customer in all of my life. I was a new customer, having them service two properties. I also had a spring clean-up, for an additional $100. My only request was that they call my father before servicing his property the first time so he could show them how to open the gate. I told them this over the phone, and wrote it in big bold letters over the contact. Guess what -- they didn't speak to him, showed up and called me to say they couldn't get into the property. I said they needed to speak to him first, and do not cut anything. They called me back, said too late, we left a message, that counts and we cut the front lawn. And you'll have to pay the full amount. I asked if they could come back later in the week to finish the job. She said no, it wasn't their fault they couldn't get into the back yard. At that point I asked to speak to a manager, the girl said that was not possible, she is in charge. Really ? Then I said I wanted to speak to whomever signs her paycheck. Shortly there after, another woman (named Kathy) called. I expained to her the issue and asked how we could resolve this. She told me, and I quote: It' too bad, we tried to call. The price of gas is very expensive so you'll have to pay." Un-real! Completly unprofessional. BEWARE!!!!
