On March 9th, I went to a local dentist and was told once again that I needed to have my wisdom…read moreteeth out especially now due to several circumstances. After several years of avoiding it, I finally gave in and decided to do so. My appointment with Dr. Hughes was this previous Thursday in his Greenwood office. I was pretty nervous as I had never had any kind of surgery whatsoever before. In the consultation, I was told that I was to have all four of my wisdom teeth out and that one had an infection around it. Dr. Hughes seemed to be pretty comfortable doing this sort of thing. The way he was talking during the consultation, it was like a doctor telling you you just had a cold. Most of my wisdom teeth were impacted, especially the one on my right jaw which had come in at an angle and had part of the tooth in the gum. The wait wasn't too bad. My appointment was at 10:30 and by 11:15 I was in the back with the surgery about to start. There are several kinds of sedatives oral surgeons can use and Dr. Hughes uses the IV sedation. This is the one that has the side effect of partial to full memory loss from when the medicine takes effect to when it wears off. The medicine worked well and fast as did Dr. Hughes. Having all four wisdom teeth took twenty minutes (half the time the hygienist at my dentist said). The IV went in at 11:15 and by 11:35, all four teeth were gone and I was sitting up on the chair. Now two days later, I've had little pain beyond the first day. I've only had to take three painkillers and two were that same afternoon of my surgery. If you have to have your wisdom teeth out, I would recommend Dr. Hughes.
