I had such high hopes. After all, Lou Scally from WHAG Hagerstown is on television singing their praises. I went there for the first time three years ago. I was new to the area and they were close by. I liked that they had a large selection, even if it was difficult to understand their set up. I wasn't sure what flowers I'd find in the greenhouse. Which ones were perennial? Annual? Which ones needed light and which ones needed shade? I was a newbie and this place is NOT newbie friendly. Trying to find someone to help you is next to impossible. No one ever approaches you, the staff members you do manage to track down couldn't be more clear that they don't want to be bothered, etc. That doesn't work for me. I've been back three or four more times, mostly because I didn't know of anywhere else yet, and it was the same experience each time. This year, my husband and I decided to go there because we just reworked a large landscaped/entertainment area in our backyard and we needed to purchase quite a few permanent shrubs and plants. It was going to be an expensive trip and I just couldn't get Lou Scally out of my head. We were there for almost a half hour and I couldn't get anyone to help me. The one employee we came across was helping someone else and even though I signaled to her that we needed assistance, when she was done speaking to her customers, she disappeared. There's even a little mailbox that is marked that useful identifications and names of plants were located inside but nope! Empty. We left. We won't be back. I suggest that unless you know exactly what you are looking for, don't bother going there. I ended up finding a really nice nursery in another town nearby and they blew Colonial away. read more

I had a Japanese maple tree planted last spring. The company who planted it who called them selves BNR landscaping. did not plant the tree correctly it didn't even take route. Eventually the tree died and colonial farms claimed that they came and looked at it and said that I overwatered it which I did not do. Plush be in our landscaping promised to come seed my lawn in September and never even showed up. If they read this review I want my money back for the whole dog gone thing it was a scam. read more

I do patio gardening every summer, and this place is the closest nursery nearby...UNFORTUNATELY! The majority of women that work in this place are miserable, unfriendly and unhelpful! I have been going to this nursery for 5 summers now, and the one thing that has always been consistent is the rude and condescending attitude of the employees. Don't even bother asking anyone for help, as they will make you feel like a complete idiot for asking your question, or completely blow you off and leave you totally on your own. It NEVER fails...year after year. I visited there today to pick up some of my first plants this season. I walked up to two women employees in the greenhouse, and asked one of them if she could recommend others plants to grow with something I picked out. Her response: "I can't help you, I'm on my lunchbreak, you need to ask someone else." Meanwhile, she's standing there doing nothing...not eating or drinking anything. I only wanted her to answer a simple question. So get this...the other women standing there, who I guess I was supposed to ask, since the other woman blew me off, totally ignores me. So I asked again, what plants will do well with this plant in a container? She didn't even turn around to look at me and says, "Any plant." Come on, really? I gave them both a look of disappointment and walked away. They could have cared less. I could not believe how rudely I was treated. Oh, I'll go back to get the rest of my plants this summer, but the customer service there sucks. They treat their customers like dogs. read more

I didn't start out to turn my back yard into a garden, but over time, I did. The friendly and knowledgeable staff at Colonial helped make it fun and more successful than if I had gone it alone. They know what will grow in this region, and what won't. They have delivered mulch and top soil right on schedule. They have great seasonal flowers, which they grow themselves. You can go and wander as long as you'd like, or, you can grab an employee and start a conversation about your dream garden. Prices are fair and competitive, the staff always finds answers to all my questions even if I have to be introduced to a different employee who is more knowledgeable. There are veggies galore in one house in springtime, a huuuge greenhouse of annuals; houseplants, and pond plants; shrubs and trees have their own section, and the perennials are divided by sun and shade environments.
