Terry Conway did an excellent job with the landscaping design and installation at my residence. We were originally going to just do the beds and plantings around the wrapped porch. However, after seeing her additional design for the side yard, we expanded the project. Terry's final design incorporated plants and hardscapes that complimented the aesthetics of the house and provided a serene seating area near the pond. Her personal and on-site attention during installation ensured her design specifications were followed. She checked in after the winter and replace a few plants that did not over-winter well. I am a senior female who stopped today for perennials. The hill at this nursery can be difficult to navigate with a cart particularly going up. Not one person offered to help me so I left the cart and will go somewhere else where someone offers to help particularly when there are only two shoppers. read more

When we moved into our new house, we wanted a privacy hedge planted around the pool area and the problem areas in the yard fixed. A family member had used Meadows Farms to correct a drainage problem in her back yard and install a patio and they had done a great job, so we contacted Terry Conway, the landscape designer at Meadows Farms, that she had used to help us. Terry did a great job in helping us chose a hedge, as well as make a plan for replacing several large stone steps to the pool area. When that job was complete, we had Terry design a bog garden for an area in our yard which is very wet, due to an underground spring. We also had a number of trees planted. Terry and the crew from Meadows Farms did an amazing job building the garden and planting the trees. Right after the garden was done, we had a torrential rain, and Terry had to modify the garden to take care of the drainage problems. It looks even better now. We have had Meadows Farms modify the plant beds in the front yard, plant additional trees and construct a long drainage ditch on the side of our lawn. Everything is looking fantastic. Right before Christmas, I went in and bought what was tagged as a Columnar Norway Spruce. Meadows Farm closed a few days later for the season. We enjoyed the spruce on our deck with Xmas lights. When the ground was warm enough, we planted in the ground. Come spring time, an arborist laughs in my face and says that's a columnar Colorado spruce, look at the very blue needles. I was very upset so I took it back to the store for a refund or exchange (for a proper columnar Norway spruce!), the guy at the store goes LOL it's past the 10 day return window for clearance plants. Edit: Meadows Farms has kindly corrected the problem that I detailed in my original post below. They contacted me and apologized for the oversight. They also got it resolved ASAP. As such, I have raised my rating from one star to four stars because that is the rating I would have given in the first place, if it weren't for this one experience. Overall, they're a solid company with a good reputation and great products. Original Post: It has now been over a month since I paid Meadows Farms $550 to buy a tree and have them plant it at my home, which is actually not very far away from their Frederick location. At the nursery, they told me they would plant it in a week; no one showed up. I called them and they told me to "take it up with corporate." This was an unfriendly response, but, ok, I'll follow orders. So I call the corporate office and they said that "the Frederick retail location had made a mistake, i.e., that it would take another two weeks." They gave me a specific date. So three weeks from the date of purchase go by, and on the day of my scheduled installation, I get a call from a grounds worker who works for Meadows, and he says, "I was supposed to plant your tree today, but my first job took too long, so I'll have to reschedule your job for another day." I asked, "you mean you won't at least plant it first thing tomorrow?" and he said, "probably not." He promised he would call me that same evening to reschedule, but I received no call. I called him back several times, but no answer. The next day: nothing. The day after that: nothing. I called corporate and they said, "that's too bad; it's a busy time for us. Someone will call you at some point to reschedule." I was shocked by the utter lack of regard for customer service. This is no way to treat people who are keeping you in business. Clearly, when they get too "busy" their customer service--especially at the ground floor--greatly suffers. read more

This is in reference to their consultant service. I requested them to come to my home and give me some ideas and recommendations. They came to the house, looked around and was supposed to get back to me within 2 weeks. Call in 2 weeks and the gentleman said he emailed the drawing to me. Nope, never got any email. A week later, he told me his computer was not working properly. A week later, I asked for a refund. Meadows stated the check was never cashed. This leads me to believe they did not want to honor the coupon I had from the Washington Post for consultant services for $29. Way to go Meadows with the honoring of a coupon. Find another provider. This one is not reliable and don't use any coupons. read more

I like this place for the huge selection of plants and gardening material, pots, rocks, etc. Sometimes if you're only looking for a pansy or petunia you may find a better price at one of the big box stores, but if you really want that specialty plant, a load of mulch, or bark dust, etc., you'll not find a better selection anywhere nearby. On top of that I've always found the employees helpful and friendly. It's a big place and you may find yourself having to go and look for someone to help you they're more than wiling. I've also visited a couple of their Virginia locations have bought a lot of their stuff over the years. I signed up for the Preferred Customer program several years ago and appreciate the special coupons and sale notifications that they provide. read more

Favorite local nursery for darn near anything! They have a nice selection of new intro's and old favorite varieties. Reasonable pricing, helpful and friendly staff. Bring your dog -- they even have treats. Website has current specials, often really great deals. Quality is more reliable than local box stores, especially noted on items like mini pine bark nuggets. Love their house brand of potting mix, too. Indoor space has seasonal decor items as well as various fertilizers, pest control, including organic options. Meadows has very knowledgeable staff, if they don't know they will find someone on site that does. You won't leave without and answer. Selection is great! Price and size ranges are excellent. Dog friendly. Wear a good set of shoes there is a downgrade to walk if you want to see the awesome stuff at the bottom. The system for payment is great and if you need help lifting or loading they are there for you. My favorite of all time for a Nursery. I miss the Frederick location during the winter, but understand the need to close. It makes the spring that much more anticipated. read more

I love Meadow Farms! I used to run around to multiple places to find my flowers for spring planting but now I go directly to Meadows Farms. They have a great variety of annuals and perennials. I called today to find out about shade trees, size available and pricing. First I was put on hold for several minutes. Then the staff member picked up the phone and had to put me back on hold again. Then I called back and had a terrible connection. Was connected to another person who knew about trees. Got a general ideas about trees and pricing, but was told to call the landscaping department to discuss delivery and planting. When I called landscaping they were closed. Called back main number to find out about landscaping's hours, but had a bad connection again. I give up. Ive called two other places today and the people immediately knew how much delivery and planting would cost. Guess I'll go elsewhere/ read more

I always find obscure ,hard to find varieties of seeds and plants. Recently, I needed water lettuce for my pond and they had it and it was even on sale. I hope they have their fun unique pumpkin pile again this year! I love to stop in each spring on my way home just to browse and see what neato thing I might find on a whim. read more

Great selection of trees and plants. Reasonably priced and the service was much better than most nurseries, and especially the big box stores. Lots of specialty plants available. I bought a couple different Japanese Maples and they were very healthy and vibrant. The staff was very friendly and helped loading the trees, mulch and compost. read more

Pro: Usually has a decent number of qualified staff to help out which is sometimes an issue at garden centers. Minus: I forgot to bring a copy of the email they sent for a deal on bagged mulch and they would not give me the deal even though they checked their system and saw I was on their email list. Next cheapest option from them was about $70 more than it would without the email. I didn't fuss much but I did tell them I was going elsewhere to buy which they shrugged off. I have gotten my mulch (3-4 cu yds) from Meadows every year except this one when I went looking elsewhere. I found a deal for the same quality of product whose every day price was the same as I would have gotten with the email deal. So I guess my con is that they are overpriced on some items and foolishly stubborn on their email deals! What a silly thing to hold out on and lose business you could have continued to get for years to come. read more
