I wanted to tell other travelers that had opted for stays on the other side of the road (not on the lake) what they were missing. The host, Leo, was kind, accommodating, and easy going in all interactions from reservation to checkout. Every day we were offered for the room to be made up entirely, to receive fresh towels, or/and or to have the trash removed. Leo struck the exactly right balance in degree of service, neither pushy nor neglectful. As many others have said, the rooms are spotless. They are simply furnished but have all amenities and clearly have been kept up with meticulous care ( for example, both bathroom and bedroom as well as windows and doors had a fresh coat of paint). Every single piece in the inventory (fridge, lights, AC, etc.) worked perfectly. The spaciousness of the room, the full-size back window in addition to the even larger front window, all easy to open and with a mosquito screen, and the view out on the beautiful, natural backyard adjacent to Lake Michigan were unexpected bonuses. Traffic on the highway (#2), from which the motel is set back quite a bit, dies down in the evening and the rooms seem to be sound proof as nights were quiet and calm. There are so many things to do and see in the area, three nights were not enough. We will definitely be back, perhaps in a different season.

With only six rooms we were worried they too would be sold out, but the owner was able to give us a room. And what a joy it was; clean, comfortable bed, good shower, wifi, frig, ice, microwave, nice size room, quiet: the best we had stayed at in our travels. Would reccommend it to anyone traveling the UP. Be warned, they don't take credit cards, but at that price I was quite happy to fork over the cash. When I sent the woman a text telling her about the lack of hot water, her response was to let it run. We already had tried that and had left. I can't recommend this place, at all. We did not even mention the filth that was under the chair cushion. Yes I look for bedbugs. The restaurant is not open. After arriving home I thought about our experience and I decided to recontact them, I was asked for my email......which I provided. Nothing. Looked up their email and sent my concerns and asked for a reply. 5 days later nothing. I guess a timely response is not required from them, but we had to pay right away and would have been charged if we cancelled too late. Posting this due to the fact I don't want anyone else to have a bad experience. This was the first nights stay of our vacation celebrating our22nd anniversary. I quickly fell in love with the resort and all it has to offer. This is a rustic cabin U.P. getaway that encourages its guests to share their week with each other. It offers children to run free safely to enjoy the beach, Rec Hall, playground or docks (not to mention nightly scooter rides.) The prices are fair, the number of people that rebook for the next year is unheard of and fellow "campers" become family. If you're able to get a cabin year after year for a week during the best weather months for the U.P., you are very lucky. Oh, and the sunsets! This is a family vacation! Family owned, family friendly and family focused. My kids love it here and we will never miss a summer trip to Birch Shores. As a footnote, when I proposed to my wife (way back in Feb 2004), I knew she love BSR so much, I turned my apartment into a virtual Birch Shores. Several hundred pounds of sand, "Lake Manistique" (okay, just a kiddie pool with fake fish), chase lounges and all. This is her favorite place on earth and wanted it to be a part of this big moment.
