What a wonderful three-day stay! I am so glad my husband and I chose the Star Motel over other options that were available for booking online. I wanted to tell other travelers that had opted for stays on the other side of the road (not on the lake) what they were missing. The host, Leo, was kind, accommodating, and easy going in all interactions from reservation to checkout. Every day we were offered for the room to be made up entirely, to receive fresh towels, or/and or to have the trash removed. Leo struck the exactly right balance in degree of service, neither pushy nor neglectful. As many others have said, the rooms are spotless. They are simply furnished but have all amenities and clearly have been kept up with meticulous care ( for example, both bathroom and bedroom as well as windows and doors had a fresh coat of paint). Every single piece in the inventory (fridge, lights, AC, etc.) worked perfectly. The spaciousness of the room, the full-size back window in addition to the even larger front window, all easy to open and with a mosquito screen, and the view out on the beautiful, natural backyard adjacent to Lake Michigan were unexpected bonuses. Traffic on the highway (#2), from which the motel is set back quite a bit, dies down in the evening and the rooms seem to be sound proof as nights were quiet and calm. There are so many things to do and see in the area, three nights were not enough. We will definitely be back, perhaps in a different season. read more

This was recommended by a Krist Market employee and it was not a disappointment. The room is spacious and clean. The bed was very comfortable (I read reviews that the beds were hard but we didn't experience that). The bathroom was clean and everything worked well. There's a frig and tv with cable but no microwave. The heat worked well (we came at the beginning of March) and there is an air conditioning unit that can be plugged in. It is on a busy road but at night there's hardly a peep coming from it. By morning though traffic was starting, but we didn't stay in the room all day For a comfortable, non frills stay this is the place! Oh and the owner is very friendly read more

Don't be fooled by the somewhat rough exterior, this is a worthy place of lodging. The rooms are expansive, and feature comfortable furnishings. The bathroom features good water pressure, and fresh towels. Our room even had a flat screen TV in it, and plenty of good lighting. The rates are reasonable, and the staff is welcoming and friendly. Head out behind the facility and you'll see a beautiful landscape that you can explore leading right up to Lake Michigan. This is a highly recommended place to stay in the area! read more

I was a walk-in and ended up staying 2 nights. While the motel looks dated from the outside, the inside seem to have been recently upgraded. But what stands out even more is how friendly an helpful the owners of this motel are. They even took the time to drive me to the in-town U-Haul dealer and helped me load my motorcycle onto it even though they were in the middle of conducting housekeeping tasks. The rooms were huge and very clean. It came equipped with a mini fridge, HDTV and free WiFi. I would stay at the Star Motel again if I ever found myself in that region. read more

We checked in expecting to see stars. Meryl Streep or Ashley Judd, at least. But no dice. I may have been the most famous person there owing to my scintillating Yelp! reviews. Yes, we have had restful nights at this Mom & Pop (actually, I think it's son & dad) off and on for years. Yes, it's an older motel, but very reasonable priced. Free coffee in the morning, friendly staff, and clean large rooms. Close enough to everything we wanted to do (downtown, boardwalk, casino) Would definitely stay again if in the area. read more

We really enjoyed our stay here -- we made it "home base" during our UP vacation. (Manistique is close to the Garden Peninsula and the Seney Wildlife Refuge, and there's plenty to see and do right in the immediate area.) The motel, which is pet-friendly, is very clean; the rooms are comfortable and bright; if you want you can hang out in the back yard, which provides a nice view of Lake Michigan. The Star Motel is great. The rooms are really clean and well kept. You can tell the owners put a lot of love and care into maintaining this place. They allow pets and there are lots of grassy areas around the motel to walk your dog, including a little foot path down to the lake. Also, the Manistique boardwalk is located just down the road and is great for a walk or run. read more

I am sitting here in my room and enjoying the sound of Lake Michigan's waves through the back window. Clean and roomy and at the bargain rate of $46, which includes my dog, I highly recommend this to travelers who need a good place to rest their heads and don't need a pool and continental breakfast. I say 5 stars because it is really as good as it gets for what it is. That is a clean, comfortable, friendly motel where you park right outside your room (no lugging your bags through a lobby) and the price is great. It is pet friendly and you can literally open the window and sleep to the sound of Lake Michigan and while near the highway it is far enough back that we heard no road sound. We loved it. Beds were comfortable. We have stayed across the street on many occasions but like this better but if it is full (likely) go across. read more

My buddy and I paid $58 per night for the both of us here. We stayed two nights this week. The first thing I did before we agreed to rent a room there, was to ask if I could see a room. I wanted to make sure it was clean, and it was. I did a quick once over of the room and checked the bathroom's cracks and edges to see that it was very well kept. There was wi-fi, a mini-fridge, a TV, and two nice queen size beds. I'd probably have slept very well if my buddy didn't sound like a lawnmower when he snored. They make a pot of coffee in the office in the morning you can help yourself to, which was awesome for me to find. You can open your back window and hear the beach, and it has a pretty nice view of the back yard. I don't recommend casting a line around there, because it is pretty rocky and you might lose your fishing-lure. I'd go there again. read more

I have stayed in many family owned motels in the UP and this one is at the top of the list. The man who checked us in was very nice, let us know about the coffee and ice, and gave us the last room. Several other motels had half empty parking lots. Modern looking rooms, a decent size fridge, the highest attention to cleanliness, and the affordable rate = 5 stars. I will seek the Star Motel out when I come through Manistique in the future. read more
