Love shopping in the Amish stores while in the Clare, Michigan area. The people are always friendly and welcoming. This place has bulk items that they repackage into different sizes. They have spices, food, cheese, and at the back an ice cream counter. The cherry chocolate chunk is yummy. read more

First, they moved down the road from the location pictured here--very close by. The picture above is now an outdoor furniture store--made by Amish. Worth going in. As to the store, they have boxed religious cards--like sympathy, birthday, etc. These are hard to find as so many Christian book stores closed. Prices are very reasonable, and they have always had clearance baby books at great prices. Also socks made in the USA. read more

This is a real, authentic Amish country store. No electricity, no phone. Just all the old school stuff Amish people need/crave: buttons, cool straw hats, Dick and Jane books, baskets handmade but 9yo kids, etc. This place is really, really interesting, but please don't be an 'English' douchebag and walk in with your cameras as start laughing at everything while getting your husband to pose with the Amish hat. There are a lot of cool items in here. But beware, there is also some junk that is made in China - cheap kid's toys that you can get anywhere like little cars and plastic crap. So while I am looking at the cool wooden puzzles and old fashioned toys, my son is grabbing for the tin train that you pull back to make it go forward - which you can find anyplace, like I mentioned. Except here it's $7. Cool place but watch out for the things that are not authentic. Next to a "real washboard" (oh ya, like I want one of those) are poorly made crocks from China. My experience is that the Amish can be pretty shrewd when it comes to money so "buyer beware". read more

We live in the area so we shop here quite frequently. We find the prices on many (but not all) things to be relatively inexpensive; we appreciate the quality of many (but not all) of the items for sale; and we just like supporting the Amish community, whom we think have added character (in more ways than one) to our whole mid-Michigan area. Here's what you need to know when you visit: Just because it's an Amish store doesn't mean that all, or even most, of the merchandise will be Amish-made. The Amish are just as likely to buy "made in China" as non-Amish people; and this store is really targeted as much or more for "English" tourists as Amish locals. The Colonville store does sell a small number of locally made Amish handcrafts -- basketry, mostly -- but if you're looking for Amish-made stuff your better bet is just to travel around the countryside in Clare and Gladwin counties looking for Amish home businesses. The Amish folks running this store are not completely representative of the local Amish population in general. Most of the Amish in Clare and Gladwin Counties are actually Old Order Amish, who aren't as affluent and who live much more austere lifestyles. (I'll hear some touristy people making fun of the gas refrigerator, solar panels, etc. on the store property, as if this family is somehow "cheating"...in reality there are many different autonomous Amish communities, each of which negotiates its relationship with modern technology in its own way.) To me the strengths of this store are: Good quality, solid, no-nonsense kitchenware -- pots and pans, cast-iron utensils, low-technology kitchen implements...you will pay for the quality, but you'll have something that will last for years. Canning supplies -- these will be cheaper than average. Hunting/trapping/farming stuff (although for serious farm buying you'll want to hit the "real" Amish hardware -- the owners of this store will tell you how to get there). Some camping supplies, like campfire tripods and cooking utensils. If you're into herbal medicine, there are a lot of herbal products here. Oil lamps and accessories -- good for keeping on hand in case of power outages. There's also, interestingly, a really nice section of professional-quality harmonicas. Books: If you really want to get a taste of Amish culture, the store carries all sorts of Amish histories, prayer books and hymn books (many of them in German, with the old Fraktur print). I also enjoy visiting this store just to read the ads for other local Amish goods and services posted on the walls or on the table kept for that purpose. If you want to really meet the Amish community, read some of these ads and see who's selling what. Or ask the owners -- they can direct you to other Amish businesses in the general area. Merchandise I'd stay away from: The schlocky made-in-China dinnerware and tacky tschotsckes, which are purely for tourists. We have Amish friends -- dropping-in-on-level friends -- and they really don't have this sort of thing in their homes. We've noticed that the store has been carrying a few more Amish-made items lately, I think in response to visitor demand. This is a good thing. If you are in the area and are new to Amish culture, I'd recommend your stopping in here purely as kind of an easy entre' into the Amish community -- but keep in mind that the store "is what it is," ask the owners about interesting other places to visit in the neighborhood, and do some exploring on your own on the side roads all around this business. read more

Our group visits Clare almost monthly. I could have spent all day in there and not see everything. I bought my grandson the start of the "Little House On the Prairie" series. Excellent prices and excellent products! I used to be Mennonite and they even have the Christian Hymnal, the book I used to sing from.
