I have been here several times over the years and always am amazed at the enormity and complexity it took to build this historical structure. Being an engineer I definitely appreciate how long it takes to build any big structure in the US using commercial grade hydraulic lifts and cranes and thinking what ingenuity and building skills the Romans had to build such structure and for it to survive so many centuries. Truly amazing. I wonder how many of our skyscrapers we have built will be around a 1000 years from now. Come on you know the answer (:

An absolute must-visit when in Rome! Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Standing inside the Colosseum is incredibly moving and completely lives up to the hype. Walking through and picturing the history that took place here is surreal. The scale and preservation of the structure are breathtaking. I highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance for an early time slot on the official Colosseum website to beat the crowds.

It's a must-do, even if it's a tourist classic. Arrival at the top of the hill is kind of a nightmare with scammers and sellers all over the place - please just ignore them and don't engage with them, it will make your life easier. Otherwise, it seems they keep them away from the actual area of the forum, colosseum, and old city area because they don't seem to bother you there. It's surprising how cool it is and how much it affects you to actually see this in person so despite it being a touristy thing, it's something you just have to go see.

You can't visit Rome without a stop at the Colosseum. This iconic spot is full of history. You could spend hours here. However, it was a bit crowded for our taste and the signage was basically non existent.

The Colosseum was absolutely unbelievable. Everything about it was five star. The reason for the four star rating was the protocols, staff, etc. There was no signage outside, so we waited in the security line for 15 minutes and then they tell us at the metal detectors that were supposed to be on the other side for the special floor access entrance. Then we had special tickets for the attic which wasn't supposed to be till noon so we asked if we could get up there at like 10 and they said it was very busy, but they could probably squeeze us in. And then we get up there and there was less than 10 people in the whole attic area which was like three levels of balconies for viewing... A total Ghost Town. Then upon exiting, we were trying to go out the exit for the floor access and the lady tried not letting us go out that way unless we had our tickets with us still... What is happening here... We are just trying to leave the Colosseum... What difference does it make! So the staff there's trying to sour the experience.

Breathtaking. One of a kind sight to see. It is very well maintained and if you get early tickets, there will not be too many crowds. I was able to walk freely and take pictures without anyone next to me. The website can be a bit confusing but it is worth buying from the official seller.

A slice of history right here. I recommend that you see this, even on the outside if you don't want to go in. I want to take a moment to address the security measures as patrons have to go through two checkpoints with metal detectors and scanners. I think three ticket scans. I was with a tour group and lost my belt in the scanner machine and had to decide whether to stay with my group or look for my belt. I chose to stay with the group. I went on a guided tour and got to go through the tunnels underneath the colosseum where gladiators and animals were once held. This shows where levers and pulleys were used like an elevator to raise to the colosseum floor. I also got to go around the seating area and colosseum floor. It was hard for me to believe that the colosseum floor was wood, covered with sand and they could actually flood the floor with water to have ship battles.

Taking a tour is so helpful for understand the historical history behind it. It wasn't boring and we enjoyed our guided tour. Our guid kept ed us moving but I didn't feel rushed.

Obviously, being there is the most magical thing the history you can feel it. The guided tour is fine. I just hated that they were kicking us out at the end and didn't let me fully immerse thankfully, we got there early so we were there almost an hour, but still them kicking us out was kind of rude and they weren't like very friendly doing it

I've always loved Roman history, so visiting the Colosseum this past October was a big moment for me. Even in the "off season," it was really busy, but that just shows how essential this spot is for visitors. Walking through the structure and seeing the arena from above really gave me a sense of what it might have felt like when the crowds were roaring, and the energy was intense. The place is huge and impressive, and while a lot of people know about the gladiators, I learned that the Colosseum was used for all kinds of events. I recommend taking a guided tour -- it helped with skipping the long lines and gave more context that made the visit even better. Also, make sure to walk around the outside area. The nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are right there and worth exploring. If you're in Rome and have any interest in history or just want to see something unforgettable, definitely add the Colosseum to your list.

Another amazing experience. I am so happy I made it here. I did this solo (no tour) and I am glad I did it that way. I was able to enjoy this experience at my own pace on my own time. Breathtaking architectural site and to see it and experience it is just awesome, NOT TO MENTION OF ONE OF THE WONDERS OF THE WORLD I purchased my ticket for this on line a few weeks before my trip and that process is very easy. I recommend doing that. Also be mindful that the time slot you pick when purchasing your ticket is the real time they allow you to enter So if your ticket is for 10am entrance you cannot enter before that time. I saw a lot of people being turned away and told to return at the time on their ticket.

My family and I visited the Roman Colosseum while in vacation in Italy. We bought tickets without a tour guide. The line to get into the Colosseum was long so keep that in mind. They check for tickets three times before you are actually inside of the Colosseum so have them ready. Once inside we were able to walk about and see the different Colosseum displays and we were able to take pictures and go around the whole Colosseum. It can get very hot during the day so I suggest buying tickets for early morning. It's definitely worth visiting if you're in Rome.

Oh my god!!! You have my heart. I'm glad it stayed right next to it so I throughly enjoyed it morning evening and night. Massive yet elegant it breathes life into history, making the echoes of gladiatorial games and public spectacles feel almost real. Just breathtaking. My favorite was waking up and grabbing a hot coffee at a cafe right in front. This time of the year wasn't crazy busy and I highly recommend going now. It tends to get crowded, so arrive early. Buying skip-the-line tickets is worth it. Without saying the history and atmosphere make it a must-visit in Rome. Just the structure makes you almost feel that this is not man made so powerful and impressive not just for its size but for how well it has endured over time. Its strength and symmetry reflect the brilliance of Roman engineering. I highly recommend taking a guided tour, having a meal or coffee in front of the colosseum. Also a scooter ride just around the structure-we did that and it was beyond fun. Purchase your tickets online before you go-same day walk-ups often mean long lines or sold out slots, especially in peak season.

I have traveled a lot in many different areas. I have never run in to such a disgruntled and extremely rude group of staff people at your Colosseum. The Colosseum is a place of history a place to study a place to see it is not a place to be accosted by staff. We didn't have the proper ticket so we were told to leave at 6:30 sharp cause we could only see one part of the Colosseum. That's acceptable however we were told several times that we needed to get ready to leave before 6:30, and we were not offered any type of compensation. We were told we bought in expensive tickets and it was nothing they could do about it since we bought from a third-party. Granted the third-party is at fault too, but the reception by the staffers was nothing less than dismal. I'm from Washington DC. We're used to tourist all the time constantly. We do not charge for our visitors to see our wonderful monuments. I understand countries need to support their monuments. I don't have a trouble with that. I do have trouble with rude inconsiderateand snarky staffers. If they are dealing with the tourist, they need to be respectful and helpful. Very, very poor Rome. Julius Caesar would be shocked! read more

So damn cool. It is trippy how the Colusseum is smack dab in the middle of the city. It's bizarre to drive by it in a car. Inside, it is cavernous. The arched opening are massive. Cats roam the ruins. It's sad that people have done graffiti. You feel like you are in the movie Gladiator. read more

I believe most people are familiar with this beautiful landmark. Just being here and looking at this structure feels different and good. Whether inside or outside, this landmark and its history took breath away. We had an amazing tour. We took our time once inside and enjoyed the museum section first. Then we went up in the stands and went around the whole thing. Truly incredible. The whole tour here took us about 1.5 hours. But the ticket also includes the Roman forum which is next to the colosseum and that is also an amazing tour. Highly recommended read more

An incredible experience and must see for first timers in Rome like myself! I highly recommend a guided tour to avoid long lines to get in and for more detailed history lessons, plus you'll skip past everyone in line. Although there is a lot of restoration taking place, it's still worth seeing on your visit! read more

The line is the worst part of the experience- the sheer number of people who are waiting in line to witness the colosseum certainly explains why it is such a popular feature of any roman postcard! Taking off a star because of the crowds- wish I'd gotten a chance to go at a less busy time. I've been twice- once as a small trip and once with a larger group. Getting to go inside was a little underwhelming given the long wait, but actually getting to see the inside and learn the mind-blowing facts like how the space used to be flooded with water for naval-themed gladiator fights was insane! Pro-tip: avoid going in the summer if you'd like to keep your skin. read more

What else can be said? It's the Colosseum. You've heard about this place everywhere, now make the effort to go see this place in person. You might think this place is worth skipping because of the crowds. Don't do that. This is one of those places you have to see at least once in your lifetime. I came here on a very hot June afternoon with a group. While I do not remember our tour guide's name, the guide did a fantastic job at explaining us the history behind the Colosseum and keeping us entertained. They were professional, kind and funny at times too. I'd recommend you get involved in a guided walking tour here so you can truly see all that the Colosseum has to offer. Speaking of which, be sure to bring WATER and WALKING SHOES. You will thank me later. Given I came here with a group, I do not know what admission prices are like so this review will not cover that part. A security check is of course required before entering the facilities. All in all, an excellent experience since I was wowed by the architecture and the history that was surrounding me at the time. A must see when in Rome - and for good reasons too! read more

Best advice to go see the coliseum is to book a private tour. Our tour was early in the morning and we were the first group through the door that morning. It wasn't crowded therefore we were able to listen to our tour guide as she took us through the ruins. The pictures I took were amazing. No one in the background, just the spirit of those who came before us. I loved the areas that we toured. We even saw a cat that has made this structure its home. I was a bit underwhelmed with the area around the coliseum. Not sure if anyone's to blame, there is so much tourism I wouldn't know how anyone would keep up with cleaning up the vicinity. It is a site to see. Advice: 1) Be prepared to walk (a lot). 2) Bring water or purchase outside. 3) A hat or visor would be nice. 4) Book a private tour, well worth it. read more

The Coliseum is one of those "must see" things if you ever visit Rome. However, it's more of a one time thing. I was not really impressed with the size of the structure because it was much smaller than I initially expected but apparently it's only 1/3 of its original size because the other 2/3 was destroyed. Make sure that you are alert when you visit the Coliseum and walking around it because there are a lot of con artists out there trying to get your money by telling you a sob story. Long story short, if a stranger is being overly friendly outside a tourist attraction, 99% of the time they will ask you for money right after trying to give you a "friendship" bracelet or telling you a story about how he or she has no money to feed their baby at home. This has happened to my friends and I on different occasions when we visited tourist attractions in Europe. read more

This review is for the service I experienced during my visit to the coliseum. The place itself is magnificent! I just wish the people who works their does not overbooked and over crowd their touring groups. This coliseum is great! But, Overpriced! Over crowded! It's stinks! There's only one bathroom for thousands of people! People are rude and a lot of people wants you to buy something from them. 2 euro for a bottle of water!! Crazy place to be! If this is your scene go for it! We got on the hop on hop off which that person asked for 30 euro per person. The tour to get in the coliseum is 40 euro per person which allows you to get in skipping the line. This place is not well kept at all. It's pretty obvious, everyone is just after the tourists $$$$. What a shame to promote history. read more

You can't go wrong visiting this amazing piece of history! Please be sure to follow the rules so that everyone can continue to enjoy this place for many more years to come. It was so awesome to step back in time and imagine how the colosseum was back in the time of the great empire! The ticketing process was a bit confusing, but there were some staff members walking the line who were able to give us information. Be wary as there are fake "employees" trying to sell tickets! We made sure to go first thing in the morning so we didn't have to wait forever. We were there about 30m before opening and there was still a bit of a line, but it didn't take long to get in. When we finished there, we went across to street to Palestine hill and the ruins there. It made for a great day! read more

Basically one of the must-see things in Rome. Even if you're not into the Gladiator or history, this place is so massive and grand that it will blow your mind. I've been here twice now. It never ceases to amaze me. The admission ticket is paired with the Palatine Hill admission--€18 for the whole thing, I believe but prices do increase over time. I would advise either coming early to avoid the crowds or in the afternoon. You'll need maybe 2 hours to go through the entire thing and get all the photos you want. Sunset time make Colosseum glow orange. read more

We used GETYOURGUIDE to buy our tickets way in advance. We *3 of us)were to meet them at a park to get our tickets. When we met the people that addressed us by our names clearly and gave us our tickets and told us where to go. When we got down to the line to get in (still a line with tickets) and got to the person checking your passport etc they informed us that one of our party could not get in because his name didnt match the passport. We looked down and the group we bought the tickets from put the same name twice on 2 of the tickets. We said two of the same name (both male) obviously a mistake by the group we bought the tickets from. The guy says sorry you will need to go to ticket office and get straightened out. Walked to tickets office and waited over an hour to get up to the ticket person who then instructed us we would have to buy another ticket even though I clearly had the app on my phone showing three tickets purchased and mistake was made. We lost money but more importantly we lost valuable vacation time. The whole event costs us over 2 .25 hours in time. Did I mention that they already changed the time on us which made us have to rearrange our next scheduled event. NIGHTMARE read more

One of the most empowering places I've ever been! Rome is riddled with magnificent history every where you look and turn! The coliseum was something truly unbelievable to stand in! To look down and see where the gladiators fought and to feel like you could of been there and hear the crowd roar! It was truly amazing! read more

Yelp is really worse than TA, 3.5 stars on the coliseum? What the hell?? I went inside via a Cosmos Tour, but if you want to go on your own, I think it's like 50 Euros. IMO it is worth it. I am big into history and have a degree in linguistics so I really enjoyed it. It's crazy to think how old this building is. I wish I were more into photography when I went to see it and could show you guys some cool shots. But it's cool. read more

Outside the Colosseum entrance, there are a bunch of scammers trying to get tourists attention, which made me uneasy. However, once I got into the entrance that tour groups use, I felt a lot more easy. We got to walk on the ground level where the gladiators actually walked which was super neat. The steps are super steep and definitely not the best for older people (especially because they are doing renovations to the structure). They have a small gift shop inside as well. read more

The wife and I took the underground tour and it was incredible! We also went during the winter time so tourism was low and we were able to see "secret" spots that usually get looked over on tours with large groups. This can take a lot out of you so if you're gonna do this try not to book another tour later in the day! read more

Donna, can you check this for typos before I put it on Yelp? -- starts here -- We walked up to it on foot, because we wanted to see what it looked like as you walk up to it. At first, I was like, "Is it done?", but then I realized it was on purpose to make it blend in with all the Italian looking stuff in the area. The second guy we talked to was a lot nicer, and he said they used to have ship battles inside it. I don't think he was a drug head. Probably just messing with us, but super friendly! People back then were way more savage and didn't really care about cushions or need parking, so it makes sense what they did here. It's way bigger than the model I made of it in school, but I had never seen it in person back then, so I had no idea. Congratulations Jacob!!!!!!! This place is fantastic, and I'm coming back with Debbie and Steve tomorrow, but we have to return the basket she bought first. It was messed up on the bottom, but we didn't notice that when she bought it. Don't worry, the guy was super nice, and I bet he just lets us swap it for a new one. If not, no biggy. Great job Rome. Super cool! read more

Its alright. Its really just another set of ruins. There isn't much too see since most of it is deteriorated and/or gone. Its cool to say you've gone but once you get inside you're really not seeing anything that exhilarating. read more

Even so, I decided to pay the €2 to access the lower section of the fountain -- and I'm so glad I did. The queue moved quickly, and once I saw the fountain up close, I was completely in awe. At that point, the €2 felt like nothing at all. I also went back another morning at 6 am, and it was a completely different experience. There were only a handful of people around, the sunrise was beautiful, and the atmosphere felt calm and magical. With no staff present, people were simply moving the fences to walk down closer to the fountain. I would highly recommend visiting -- it's easily one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

Beautiful fountain, well kept for sure one of those things that u should take the time to see while visiting Roma.

We walked up to a facade that appears relatively modest from the outside, the kind of church that might not catch your attention unless you knew what was waiting inside. But stepping through the doors revealed an incredible Baroque interior filled with ornate details, marble, gold accents, and stunning works of art that immediately made the stop feel worthwhile. The highlight is undoubtedly the famous ceiling fresco, which creates an astonishing illusion of a towering dome and soaring architecture where none actually exists. We stood in the marked viewing spot and watched the perspective shift, the trompe l'oeil effect so convincing that it took a moment to register that the dome was painted. It is one of those details that is even more impressive in person, and it is worth taking a few minutes to fully appreciate the craftsmanship. The church also has a mirror setup that lets you admire the ceiling without straining your neck, though we noticed it often attracted a line of visitors waiting for a turn. Despite being a popular attraction, the church still managed to feel peaceful, especially since we visited outside of the busiest hours. The side chapels offered quieter corners to pause, and the overall energy of the space remained calm even with other visitors moving through. The Pantheon was built originally as a Roman temple and later changed into a church in the 7th century, so it is one of the best preserved ancient buildings in Rome. The Oculus, circular opening at the top of the dome lets in light and rain. The ceiling above is a work of art. Statues and art around the perimeter also delight the eyes. You can even pray at the pews in front of the altar. Inside, tombs of Raphael, Victor Emmanuel II, and Umberto I and others. Even in the "off season," it was busy, which shows how high up the list it is for any visitor. Walking through the structure and looking down into the arena from above, I could really picture the energy of the crowds and the events that once took place there. The Colosseum is huge, up to 50,000 people once packed inside, and it was used for all sorts of public spectacles, not just gladiator fights. I'd recommend taking a guided tour if you can; it helps skip the ticket line and gives context that really adds to the experience. Also, make sure to explore the area around it--the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are right next door and worth the time. If you're in Rome and even a little curious about history, the Colosseum is absolutely worth seeing. It really brings ancient Rome to life.

My boyfriend and I came here to explore the live market and also to look for souvenirs to bring home. The vendors here are really aggressive and I would have enjoyed it more if they gave me space to look instead of hound me to buy buy buy. Like chill dude can I look at what I'm buying. Sigh. We were here til closing time and even get to see how the vendors efficiently and quickly packed up their stalls and belongings to wrap up for the day. And of course... a great area to enjoy some gelato.

Other than saying you climbed the steps, I wasn't sure of the big attraction. The view from the top was okay but not a panoramic view of the city. Go to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Vittoriano monument for a fantastic view of Rome. Much higher climb but it is also offers a free view from the balconies including the Colosseum.

The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi stands in front of the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.

My boyfriend and I had the privilege of visiting both during the day and at night, and each time offered a unique perspective. During the day, the Colosseum is bustling with energy. I highly recommend visiting the Colosseum if you are coming to Rome! The architecture is beautiful and it is fascinating how it was built in just 8 years. Whether you view the Colosseum from the outside or check it out from the inside, you will be in awe! I would definitely recommend booking the ticketing to go into the Colosseum ahead of time and potentially booking a tour. If you go on a tour, you will most likely learn facts that you would've never known. We also saw very cool ruins. The only downside is the crowds. If you don't go to the Colosseum while you are in Rome, then you waisted your trip. The Colosseum is not only a reminder of what happened in the past, but also an amazing experience. It has four levels that are available to visit. If you have the chance, get an under ground tour guide. They explain the underground animal system and show you how the gladiators entered the arena. The gift shop was nice, too. The prices were high though. read more

The Colosseum was so cool! If you did not visit the Colosseum you have not been to Italy! The views are amazing! Get a tour guide --they will tell you a lot of facts. We also went under ground that was sick! Underground you can see a lot of things. One of them was seeing where the animals were.
