What an amazing visit at night. As an experienced traveler, I always recommend fellow travelers to visit sites twice. Once during the day and once at night. The contrast is striking. Seeing the Colosseum at night was breathtaking. Usually I have a list of superlatives but it just takes your breath away. To get there either take the metro or have an Uber / cab drop you off at the metro station. Views from the hilltop are incredible then walk down to the Colosseum for the ground level views. I was really happy to see the Colosseum. It really is unbelievably gigantic! I can't speak to the interior (or tour pricing or entrance pricing) because we opted to just walk around and enjoy it from the exterior. As all points of interest are in Rome, the Colosseum is super crowded! We got there just before lunch time on a late June day. And yes, it was packed! Annoying, as others have mentioned, are the "gladiators," who are men dressed in cheesy gladiator costumes who approach you with the requisite "sword" and aggressively try to take a photo with you for a "tip." My step-daughter opted for a photo with the gladiators, so, yeah, if that's your jam, enjoy that! We had a delicious lunch around the corner. It was some of the best minestrone I had in Rome. read more

This review is LONG overdue! My wife and I visited Rome last month but it's been so hectic since we came back to the US!! (We just moved and you know how much work goes into all that). The Colosseum is like NOTHING you will ever see! This is THE Colosseum! The OG one! (Not where the A's/Raiders used to play or where USC plays football lol). Seeing this is an absolute MUST for anyone vacationing in Rome or Italy. Even when filled with tourists there are plenty of areas on the second level to capture pictures and videos! I'd say you need an hour at minimum to walk around and take in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. I highly recommend buying your tickets in advance! We literally booked at midnight exactly one month prior to the date we visited. Book using the official Colosseum website! Not a "third party" site that will jack up the costs! Purchasing in advance also allows you to "skip the line" which is HUGE when it comes to European sightseeing in general. My wife and I paid 18 Euros per person for access to the first and second levels of the Colosseum (as well as access to the Forum and Palatine Hill). We did not get access to the arena or underground attic of the Colosseum, as heavy rains flooded those areas in the weeks previous to our visit. Additionally, those tickets are incredibly difficult to nab online. We also made sure to book our tickets EARLY in the morning to beat the hordes of tourists! Our scheduled entry time was 9:00am and we arrived at the Colosseum about fifteen to twenty minutes before. The earlier you can get here, the better! If you are looking for a tour there are plenty of options for that too! Tour activities can be purchased via third party, but my wife and I opted to do our own thing and explore ourselves. In a nutshell, the Colosseum truly was REMARKABLE. It is mind-blowing that this structure was built 2,000 years ago and is still standing in such fabulous condition! My wife and I are avid history fans and thoroughly enjoy Roman history. Coming to maybe the second most impressive historical masterpiece (behind the pyramids) really was the highlight of our trip! I was visiting Rome and had to see this place. The line was long and the area was crowded. I would recommend getting tickets in advance. They do have people there trying to sell you tickets. However I would start from that. I was in luck on this day as it was free entry day. The catch was a long line. Bring items to protect you from the weather. Also bring water. The colosseum was also me. There are 3 floors. A lot to see. There is also a gift ship. Pay attention to the entrance as this is where they only allow you to exit on the 1st floor. My brother had spent quite a bit of time in Italy, so he knew the best way to visit this icon of human history. We purchased tickets ahead of time, thereby avoiding that particular line of people. Then, we proceeded to an open secondary entrance, avoiding more lines. Parts of the Coliseum periodically became crowded with tour groups, so when that happened, we moved ourselves to areas that were largely empty. Our guide was actually an archeologist who explained a lot of fact from fiction. It's amazing what they constructed so long ago, even an elevator system (slave powered) and bathrooms (tho communal). We selected the Big Bus tour itinerary that included the Colosseum. It was amazing to visit this historic landmark that has captivated me in books and on television. Walking up to the Colosseum as a tourist, the first thing that captured my attention was the structure's vastness. We did not have tickets to go inside, but we exited the bus for pictures and sightseeing. Needless to say, the area was extremely crowded, and the lines were exhaustingly long. This particular day was exceedingly hot, and the large crowd only amplified the heat. Like the other heavily populated tourist areas, photo and sightseeing opportunities were somewhat complex. On the day we visited, not only was there traffic congestion in the area, but the crowd was in record numbers, so we saw what we wanted to see, took some photos, and moved to the next stop on the itinerary. In my opinion, it is a must-see attraction. read more

The Colosseum is obviously somewhere you will want to stop while you're in Rome, but there are many ways to plan your visit. You can see the exterior for free, if that is all you're interested in, but if you want to see the inside at all, you will need to buy tickets. And the lines to buy tickets, can be verrrry long so definitely pre-book your tickets (you can do it online via the Colosseum website or via a few online retailers who handle the sales). You can buy either regular tickets, skip-the-line tickets, or an actual tour. I recommend one of the second two options above, as a ticket by itself will still mean long entrance lines and no guided information as you go. With skip the line, you at least get in much quicker. But the best way to see it is via a tour, where you're with a group and have a guide who will explain each thing you're seeing. We did the Colosseum tour with Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum and it was only about $30 USD each, so definitely worth it when a plain ticket itself for the Colosseum is $20. These can also be booked online with many different vendors, including the actual Colosseum website. I won't get into the different things you'll see when inside the Colosseum, as that will depend on which ticket you buy (you can do only the upper level, both levels, night tours etc). But I think you are probably familiar with what the Colosseum is - the largest standing amphitheatre in the world, still standing after over 2,000 years. I'm sure I don't need to tell you this, but if you're going to Rome and planning your itinerary, definitely make sure to slot in a few hours for a visit to the Colosseum, and do a guided tour! read more

I've wanted to visit the Colosseum since I was a girl, since the first time I saw Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck and Eddie Albert riding past, walking through and admiring the Colosseum in "Roman Holiday". We booked a group tour well in advance, putting all our stock into a company that claimed they'd be able to get us access to the Underground and all the other places within the Colosseum before moving us on to the Forum. They lied. Still, we had a chance to visit the Colosseum, in all its grand glory. We walked the paths, felt the stones, viewed the floor, examined the fossils found and put on display for visitors to see. We listened to the tour guide tell story after story of the above-mentioned fossils, listened to him explain the history of the stones, the years the Colosseum has stood, the things it witnessed. It was impressive. It was inspiring. It was...a lot. There's so much to see and experience. There's so much to view and read, so many things to take pictures of or stare at. And we missed a lot of it, just because of the tour, which was on a timed entry. Would I go back? Absolutely. Would I go back on a tour? Or in August? No and no. It may be more difficult to get tickets outside of a third-party tour company, but I think the flexibility afforded by going solo may be worth it. read more

He's genuinely funny, down-to-earth, and has this way of telling stories that pulls you in and makes history feel real. Even my 8-year-old son stayed engaged the entire time, and my 14-year-old daughter was actually moved by the stories he shared. What can I say? Wow! Worth it! Bucket list check! Glorious! I have taught history at the college level several years (like over a decade) and this was my first visit to Rome. It's wild, I mean, you teach and read and study the historical values of a place, but never quite understand the levels of complexity and beauty until you visit. It was an ultra hot day--literally in the low 100's--and we grabbed a cab to the colosseum. We walked there the night before as it was a bit cooler, we were jet-lagged and craving gelato. We saw it at night so beautifully lit and vowed to visit the next day. Here we are. Again, wow! We took a tour around the outside and then inside, creeping up the long stairways and checking out the different areas around the colosseum. So intriguing. And I promise, it's not just because I am a history freak, it's really spectacular. They have different areas with information, guides, maps, write ups, etc. it's very beautiful. I recall standing near the top and looking down at the arena area and thinking about all the blood that has been shed there, the historical moments made there, the true beauty. I was in awe. What an amazing architectural wonder! The colosseum has to be in your list to visit at least once in your lifetime! Suggestion is to avoid visiting the Colosseum during prime time like summer even though they do offer time tickets. Purchase tickets online to avoid having to stand in ticket line. Get the earliest time slot unless you are on a tour. By just getting the general ticket you will get a great perspective of the colosseum so don't fret if you can't get special tickets that you take into the arena or at the very top. We bought a combination entry ticket to the Colosseum and Forum through a third party vendor as all the tickets NOT through a third party vendor were gone as soon as they were made available. Seems the tour companies buy up all the advance tickets for pretty much everything in Rome...so...options are to wait in a long line for same day tickets or pay the premium to a tour company. We had e-tickets and self-guided tours so the markup wasn't too bad. Be ready to show a photo ID with e-tickets; names on the tickets and IDs need to match. I'm guessing this relates to the million or so people who will try to sell you tickets to the colosseum in the surrounding area. Seriously, this was one place where I really felt all the pickpocket warnings were valid... The entry point is not well marked, but we were able to find it by asking at a few spots after following the general directions on our tickets. Anyway, after all of that it was definitely worth it! The self guided tour starts with one platform to view the interior and everyone crowds together to take photos and then you head up steep stairs to a museum and gift shop...we were about to be very disappointed if that was if for the tour, but fortunately, there were a few other viewpoints on the upper level and then more after heading back down the steep stairs to the ground level. The size alone is truly amazing. As a bonus, we saw some green parrots that apparently have a colony in the area. This is another must-see while in Rome, but again be ready for crowds, lines and up charges on tickets from third party vendors. read more

Go early... to get tickets on line you must log on 30 days ahead 8:30am in EU time. Forget about trying for the Full Experience w underground, seems the tour companies grab those. Very cool ancient site. Lots of history to learn. They see bottles of frozen water right up top for like 1Eu, don't wait for the machine inside which is 5. But there are a few fountains of ice cold spring water to refill, as there is all over Rome. Even on a scorching day, it was cool with a slight breeze inside in the shady corridors. Dress cool in summer. After, walk up to the Monti area, also go see Michelangelo's Moses a few minutes away. read more

Here it is: Midnight, Rome time, is only 3pm Vegas time, so I was ready to buy tickets to the Colosseum. I did so much research on the best tickets and I had even been practicing, placing orders I didn't finish, just to make sure I could order the tickets beforehand. I was not able to buy tickets. There were some leftover, yes, so I have confidence that if you go online, you will be able to go but the tickets I wanted went super fast. The line to get in is intense so I would suggest you buy tickets online beforehand, the moment your desired date goes on sale. If you can't get what you want and are willing to shell out double the price for a tour, I would suggest that as well. And let me tell you, it's worth it to be near such a world recognized structure. To me, it still doesn't feel real that we were there in real life. The building itself is magical, even if you don't enter it. I will reiterate what people have said about being wary of pickpockets and scammers. Usually, especially in other parts of Italy, we say no and they walk away. This time someone got so aggressive with us that we had to half run away from him. He did the thing where he threw the bracelet at my husband but luckily my mans knows not to touch so it just bounced off his chest to the ground. This guy chose a darkened staircase to do this at, hence the half running so please please please be careful. read more

This is one of the many tourist attractions we visited on our trip to Italy that we really wished we'd purchased advanced tickets to. We tried the week before, but they were already booked for advanced purchase tickets. The only way to get in was to stand in a long line before sunrise to get a call back ticket, or you can sign up for one of the guided tours advertising to people on the street. We elected the line which, once the ticket counter opened, went fast. Our ticket included entrance to the Forum, which we could see at any time that day, and we had to be back for our time in about 6 hours. We headed for the Forum and enjoyed a downloadable audio tour we found online. We had lunch and did a few more things and headed back in the heat for our time slot. It was confusing buying the tickets, there are lots of different levels and some let you in with one ticket, others another ticket, and then certain areas like the subfloor was guided only. We didn't realize we didn't have access to everything, so we wandered around a bit, but it felt like a waste to not see everything. They also had several great scenic spots roped off as special access for tours only. For sure, it's an impressive ancient Roman structure that's quite well preserved and definitely worth a trip. I recommend planning in advance, getting the tickets that give you access to the stuff you want to see, and going early... the miserable Roman summer sun is enough to make anyone say -- forget it! And go look for a glass of bubbles somewhere cool. read more

If you come to Rome and other than the Vatican, isn't the Colosseum the first place you think of visiting? The 2,000 year old building where people were killed for spectator pleasure for hundreds of years. I bought a combo ticket online before my trip that gave me a timed entry for here along with visiting the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill on the same day. The easiest way to get here is by taking the Metro which has a stop about 100 yards away from the Colosseum. When I arrived on a Saturday afternoon the place was teeming with visitors. I got the impression that's the way it is here practically every day. Everyone comes here. I found my visit interesting in learning how life was back then. The daily sacrifice of humans for entertainment is fascinating. Touring thru the innards of the stadium was interesting with my favorite part being that the stadium floor was actually wooden with dirt covered over it. The floor had large doors that could be opened from below which contained a series of hallways and rooms to house people and animals. Those entities could then be lifted up through the floor doors up to the stadium floor level. Just like how modern stages can make people and things appear from below. While I enjoyed the inside of the stadium the best part is its exterior. Seriously, if you don't want to spend money on tickets or just don't have the time, come walk around the exterior and take pictures. It's free and available at any time. read more

There's nothing like stepping back in history with a visit to the Colosseum. It's one of the 8 Wonders of the Ancient World, and I get it. It's definitely worth getting a ticket and visiting inside the ruins. I went during shoulder season, and actually had a failed attempt on a Sunday. Got there at 9 in the morning and the line literally wrapped around it to purchase tickets. It would have been hours, so I went back on a Wednesday morning, arriving by 10 in the morning (I found it so unfun to get going and rush in the mornings). It was crowded but a manageable line - I had a ticket in hand in 2 hours for entry an hour later. You can buy tickets online but they sell out fast. You'll want to book weeks in advance (similar to what I did for the Vatican Museums). I'd recommend planning ahead for a more streamlined and relaxed experience. I am generally not a person to do the guided tour packages with third parties, but I will say that the Colosseum is a place I'd do it if I were to return. The queues to get guided tours inside were a confusing mess and long; the other ones skip the ticket line for timed entry and you have a guide to bring you around and share history. It was amazing to wander in awe, but I wish I'd spent about 10-20 more euros for the historical context. The Colosseum is definitely a must see during a trip to Rome for history buffs! read more
