I've shot rolls of film, dozens of models and have more recently killed a lot of electrons taking and posting digital images out on Sauvie Island. There's also free fruit for the taking come the harvest season. The grounds are great for play, picnics and just generally spending a [usually] quiet time in the great outdoors only a couple of miles from downtown Portland. Love that the money was spent to move and refurbish this grand old house to a new and public accessible location. The property is on a working farm that's posted but I don't bother or intrude on them and they don't bother me. I don't know if there are any posted rules but it is always my practice as a photographer to respect property owner's rights. Never had a problem walking around freely here though.

Refurbished to its original glory and standing as beautiful today as when it was built in the mid 19th century, I love walking the grounds and having a picnic here when I'm on Sauvie Island. The two story house is a rare example of the Classical Revival style from the mid-19th Century. Built for James Bybee, who was one of Multnomah County's first Commissioners, it was later sold to Dr. Benjamin Howell and his wife in 1858 and remained in their family until 1961. Now part of the Howell Recreation Park managed by Portland Metro, you can visit any day between sunrise to sunset. While they are no longer offer tours inside, you can walk the gorgeous property, including the fruit orchards with heirloom varieties of quince, pears, and apples. And the best part, when it's harvest time in late August and the fall, you can pick the fruit! Yes! Located just a mile down Sauvie Island Road after you cross the bridge, take the long and picturesque driveway up to the house. Rarely do I visit Sauvie Island without making this my first stop. It's fun to see the grounds in all stages of the seasons. Weddings and other gatherings often take place in the picnic area. Visit their website if you are interested in renting this gorgeous space.

The stairs towards the end make the uphill grade to the summit (Sherrard Point) easier. Boy oh boy, the view at the summit is spectacular...especially on a clear day when you can see all the mountains. I love the plaques on the landing listing the mountain names, elevations and how far away they are. Plenty of parking available and a nominal ($5) fee is required. Highly recommend!

We have been wanting to do this hike since past 2 years. So this was special to finally get to do…read moreit. It was a perfect day with Mr Sun shining down on us and we could see all the peaks. The summit has a stunning view. You can see Mt Hood, Mt Adams, St. Helens, Sisters on a clear day. One of a hidden gem and it is open from June - early November. The drive is through the dense trees so it will be mix of shadows and instant shine with little curvy roads on a sunny day. You have to pay $5 as parking fee. Once you display the parking card in your vehicle you are all set. Mostly the trail is well paced with stairs. This is doable with kids. My toddler happily did around 80% of it. You cannot complain when you reach at the top, it's simply magnificent. I can imagine how beautiful the sunrise and sunsets will be from the summit. For the view - 5* plus - it is magnificent For the structured trail - 5* If you haven't done this hike do add it to your List. You have to see it to believe it.

We stayed in an Airbnb, not far from the bridge, on the Westside between Nob Hill and the Pearl District. The Broadway Bridge stood out to me because of its truss design and unique burnt orange color (technically, "Golden Gate red" or "international orange"). It also looked old and that's because it is -- the original bridge was built in 1911-1912 and opened in 1913. The bridge crosses over the Willamette River, which splits Portland into the east and west sides, north of downtown. Just east of the bridge is the Moda Center, home of the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers. According to ENR (the Engineering News-Record) in 2017, the Broadway Bridge was the seventh-longest drawbridge bridge in the world and one of only three remaining Rall bridges in use in America: https://www.enr.com/articles/42465-bridge-lift-system-rehab-is-full-of-surprises A Rall bridge is a type of drawbridge that uses large wheels on tracks with counterweights to open the bridge for big boats. The equipment is quite noticeable atop either side of the center span of the bridge. The Broadway Bridge has four lanes for vehicular traffic and two sidewalks. The north side has views of the Fremont Bridge (steel tied-arch bridge) and I-405 and the south has views of the Steel Bridge (double-deck vertical-lift bridge). The Broadway Bridge measures 1,742 feet or 0.33 miles in length. There are nice views of the city skyline and trees throughout.

Yes, it's bronze and obviously a statue, but in the shadows, I sometimes think it's a real person! In this section of the Eastbank Esplanade, there are several benches and a stone wall to sit and take a rest. There are even water fountains and much needed shade on a sunny day. Beautiful views across the river, right under Hawthorne Bridge. If you enter the Esplanade in this area, park on SE Water. Continue your walk along the Eastbank Esplanade heading north, pass the Morrison and Burnside Bridges, and use the Steal Bridge to cross the river. This will put you on Tom McCall Park And a paved walkway all along the river. Continue to Tilikum Crossing which takes you across the river (stunning views) and back to east side. When you la d on east side, head north walking past OMSI and then back to Vera for a healthy 4.7 mile walk!

Located just steps from the Hawthorne Bridge, there is always a lot of activity in the area with people walking, running, riding bikes, scooters and the homeless tents and community. Those that work here are always respectful of everyone. It goes without saying that they keep their equipment and firehouse in spotless condition. Including the area right outside their facility where many come to sit on the benches, get a drink of water, or just take in the view of the city across the Willamette. There is a gentle sloping incline at each end, since it is a bridge, but they've made it so it's not steep and very manageable for a variety of people's abilities & ages. There are a few art pieces along the way, and informational signs about the areas history & vegetation. There are also some benches at a few spots if you want to rest.
