This is an amazing local all-volunteer collective that works to distribute books free of charge to…read moreprisoners all across the state. I don't want to jump too high on my Foucault soap box, but critical studies of our social institutions leave much to be desired...and while a good pulp fiction novel is amusing from time to time, why don't we do something to actually allow prisoners to be educated rather than simply incarcerated? One thing you and I can easily do? Reach out to those who are trapped in this system by providing them an opportunity to educate themselves! You can make tax-deductible donations to both "Books To Oregon Prisoners" and "Portland Books To Prisoners." I dropped off about 75lbs of college books (ironically, this included my well loved post-structuralist/post modernism literary criticism textbook...) but for the exceptionally ambitious, you can get involved in one of their weekly volunteer nights to help package and ship! Here is a list from their website of other places you can drop off your donations: * The Haven Cafe @ the corner of SE 35th & Division * Laughing Horse Books @ 12 10th St. between Couch & Burnside * In Other Words Books @ 8 N. Killingsworth St. * Rocco's Pizza @ SW 10th & Oak * Hollywood Theatre @ 4122 NE Sandy Blvd. * Blackrose Collective Bookstore @ 4038 N. Mississippi Ave. * Food For Thought Cafe @ the Food Court at PSU - Smith Hall Do it. Do it. DO IT! ok. off the soapbox.

January 10, 2020: This is a previous review that Yelp removed because the original review…read morereferenced Portland Police Department NOT the Port of Portland Police Department. Additionally, this review was written some years back. But the content of my review is important to all drivers in and out of the Portland International Airport Read Jamie's review and after my experience today decided to drop a comment on Yelp. Here's my story: heading to the airport in sort of a rush to get to my plane. You'd have to drive the Airport Way to have an understanding of what I am trying to say but I will try to be as descriptive as possible. Get off the freeway and heading toward the airport. Everyone and their brother is barreling down the road at 50 MPH at least. Less than a mile to the airport the MPH drops to 35. I see the sign, take my foot off the accelerator rather than to step on my brakes. Really, I was probably at 45 MPH and thought I would drop to the 35 in no time flat. Unfortnately as I was slowing down, I passed an officer who mind you, was probably, purposely going the 35 mph. Blue and red lights!!!! Ok- stop the car Terry!!!! give the nice man your license. Do you want the rental contract? .... tick tock tick tock.... Officer comes back, returns my license with a lecture that I might hurt someone at the speed I was going and here's a verbal warning...don't do that again! Next time.... $275 fine! Yikes! I was humbled. Thanked the officer, returned my car and got to my plane without skipping a beat. Like Jamie- you can't compare OR to CA officers. Different breed of humans

Still absolutely digging the programs offered by EMSWCD. Last night, we attended a new class about attracting backyard pollinators, held at Zenger Farms. Excellent venue, quality-education-level instructor, and loads of great information to load up my yard with all the things the bees and moths and happy healthy pollen movers need. If you're looking to beautify your yard and your city, or even if you'd just like a master class on appreciating the biological diversity on your next hike or walk around the block, check out one of their their classes. They're free, they're fun, and sometimes they have snacks.

If Barack's first name was actually Alfred, he'd be Al Obama. And the Alabamans might like him more? What does Barack think of the new extreme right wingers then? Those of the whole, "guns don't kill children, even when they do" and "protect democracy unless the guy we don't support wins, then burn it down", and of course the whole "rig the election through gerrymandering and disenfranchising nonwhites, then accuse the left of rigging elections loudly to silence those trying to expose the corruption." Barack says this: "They appear to be motivated, in part, because the President doesn't like to lose, and never admits loss," Obama told CBS' Scott Pelley. "I'm more troubled by the fact that other Republican officials who clearly know better are going along with this, are humoring him in this fashion. It is one more step in delegitimizing, not just the incoming Biden administration, but democracy generally," Obama continued. "And that's a dangerous path." Obama is still the favourite politician in our household, and we love him, and of course I'm a big fan of Bill Clinton and Carter, as well as Biden just for doing what he did, and of course Hillary. But Barack Obama is particularly special because he broke through one of those seemingly unbreakable ceilings, and we are now slowly moving forward through history instead of stuck in one place or moving backwards, although it doesn't it just feel like we're moving backwards sometimes? As in all the time?
