Went to Combat Fitness for 8 months. My striking improved dramatically. This is the place to be to learn Muay Thai and get fit in the East Bay, the coaches are legit. Most people are pretty cool too. One piece of feedback is that the training hours are somewhat limited compared to other Martial Arts gyms. I started a new job and could only attend on Saturdays due to the hours. After a 4-year hiatus, I've decided to get back into Muay Thai! I'm relatively new to the Concord/Walnut Creek area and I was debating if I should go back to my old gym in Benicia or try something new. I was hesitant to give Combat Fitness a try because that would have meant that I'd have to start all over with a new training staff and meet new friends; however, moving the Combat Fitness was probably my best decision yet! My favorite part about training here is how involved George is with training. For the most part, he is running the muay thai classes and has such a great way to teach things. If you're looking into getting into boxing, choose a different place! Especially if you're a woman. Had such bad interactions with a lot of these coaches including the one who owns the gym. Once, when he was demonstrating something he grabbed my hip for no reason. Dude gives off bad vibes and is too touchy with women. As for the other boxing coaches, don't expect them to create a positive environment . They can be very full of themselves and demean others. My husband and I started working out here two years ago and have now lost over 80 (yes, you read that right, 80!) pounds!! It's an incredible place where the trainers - Melissa, Ms. Angel, and George all give you 100% and really push you to get better not just in technique but also improve your form and learn new things so you can consistently push yourself. I set a goal to lose a few pounds when I first enrolled but what I ended up getting is the body that I thought I can only dream of and quite a few friends who are just amazing people. If you want a killer bod, a mean kick and jab, and topnotch trainers (who truly care about you), then this is absolutely the place to be. Don't believe me? Then come experience it for yourself. I have taken MMA (which is mostly jui-jitsu) and Muay Thai group lessons here, so my review is about those things. I have not taken the cardio classes such as kickboxing, Zumba, etc. It's tough to find, tough to contact (good luck catching someone on the phone) and tough to park, but if you can get past those issues, and you don't mind a little grit, this place is great. Nothing pretentious about this place. It's a sweat-stained garage lined with bags and a dedicated group of talented students going 100% all the time. The Muay Thai instruction and jiu-jitsu are officially for all abilities, but in theory only. This is a real sink or swim place... if you don't know what you're doing, you'll either catch up quickly or be intimidated into leaving. That said, the teachers, students, and staff are non-pretentious, friendly, and surprisingly patient under their no-nonsense exterior. If you're dedicated to learning MMA, this place is for you. Period. 5 stars. You'll get the workout of your life and you'll learn in a hurry (and frankly, if you're a cubicle-sitting wuss like me, you'll feel more like a man for it). I'm not a gym person. In fact, you have to pretty much drag me onto a treadmill. It's just torture for me! Never-the-less, I needed to shape up. My friend found this place online. The first time I pulled in I thought, "where am I?" But once the initial warehouse shock wore off, I realized this was definitely the real deal. I only take the cardio kickboxing classes. They are high energy, fun, and very challenging. I probably get more cardio and strength training in an hour here than I did in a month working out by myself in the "normal" gym. I have to agree with the other reviewers in that everyone is here to work out. There's no judgement. No one is checking you out. And all skill levels are represented. This gym is not your average gym. No towels, meet market vibe or fancy locker rooms. Just people who are interested in working out with few frills. I've done cardio kickboxing in various spots in the Bay Area.. but the cardio kickboxing classes taught here by Melissa are the best workouts I've ever experienced. You will move and sweat and feel amazing afterward. I shed inches and weight when I first started. This is a tough workout, but totally doable. read more

Finding the right gym is a lot like finding the right mate. Some may search for years without making that connection. Others never do, and still others learn to settle. Combat Fitness is the gym I'd always been looking for, and considering that I started training in one form or another since I was fourteen, I guess you could say it took me more than twenty years to find it. If we're serious about martial arts, we must ask a basic question: what do we want from our training? Because so often the answer to this question--"I want to be tougher, stronger, and generally harder-to-kill"--is at odds with the path we've chosen to help us reach that goal. Mastering stiff-legged forms, exotic weapons, and carefully choreographed "grab my wrist" scenarios, all while ponderously working through a rainbow of two-dozen belts (accompanied by those increasingly steep testing fees) can certainly provide a feeling of achievement. Your confidence is up, maybe you've lost some weight, and you certainly look pretty cool waving those wind-and-fire wheels around. And as long as an assailant comes at you with a single long, looping punch, a slow roundhouse kick to the midsection, or grabs your wrist in just the right way, you can definitely show him who's boss. Definitely maybe. At worst, this approach gives you a false sense of security, one that could leave you and your loved ones in a lot of trouble if you ever needed to self-defend. At best, it's a waste of time and money that could both be better spent elsewhere. And I'm speaking from bitter personal experience: what I thought was a solid set of skills simply didn't deliver, not even in light sparring against one of Combat Fitness's beginning MMA students. For years, I'd listened to "traditional" martial artists deride MMA as little more than a thuggish blood sport, making glib remarks about it not being a legitimate art, or how their style could make short work of even the most robust UFC champ. Being young and foolish, I often nodded at this swaggering nonsense, failing to then ask why, if that was the case, weren't they in the Octagon too, making millions ripping championship belts off guys like Bas Rutten and Oleg Taktarov? The martial arts world is rife with silliness--impractical and dangerous techniques, empty posturing, and cultish "masters" who encourage their students to practice a kind of guru-worship. I'd nearly given up on finding an effective system, much less a great school. Maybe it's because I wasn't trying so hard anymore (basically paralleling the way I met my wife)--but I basically stumbled across Combat Fitness. I didn't know much about it, except that a neighbor's kid trained there, and when I stopped by I noticed they didn't have any TVs inside. This is always a good sign, since it just isn't possible to give your full attention to your training if everywhere you look there's a flatscreen nagging at you. I enrolled in late August of 2017, mostly with the intention of getting in shape. I figured Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu classes would help me reach my goal more enjoyably than running on a hamster wheel somewhere. As of this writing, just over six months have passed. Now, I'm aware how shopworn phrases like "words cannot express" and "absolutely life-changing" are, but I don't see how I can avoid them. Coach Geoge Tsutsui (Muay Thai) and Coach Gil Castillo (jiu-jitsu/MMA) approach martial arts from a refreshingly sober, unfailingly practical point-of-view. How do they know what works and what doesn't? Because they're decorated professional fighters, champions in their fields. "I don't teach you what only works against white belts," Coach Gil tells his class. In other words, if you're there to train for cage fights, you'll develop a lean, devastating game. And if you're simply there to be a better self-defender--well, if you're training with the best, who are in turn teaching you how to defeat the best, don't you think you'll do pretty well against the average assailant? You can immerse yourself as much as you want, and at your own pace. And because they train fighters for the long-term, Coaches George and Gil (and their wonderful senior students) aren't interested in unnecessary risk. So although you'll be sparring and rolling with arguably some of the deadliest folks in the world, you'll be doing it in an atmosphere of safety, responsibility, and respect. The lack of macho BS also makes the gym a very welcoming place for female students, who comprise about half the membership. I'll close by saying that Combat Fitness not only offers the finest martial arts education I've ever received, but it's also gotten me in the best shape of my life. I've never felt this good--this full of energy, strength, and vitality. And if camaraderie is important to you, I can tell you I've made a dozen terrific new friends. First time here for my cousin's boxing match. Limited parking in their lot, but plenty of street parking. The place is a huge storage unit and inside the floor is laid out with mats which you have to remove your shoes to walk around. They have separate bathrooms for women and men. That's a plus. Only one stall!! NEGATIVE. The turnout rate was pretty good. For an event like this, it was $10 general admissions fee and $5 for kids. Water bottles $1, small bags of chips $1, one small cookie $1, can of soda probably $1, ahaha. Anyways, It gets pretty musty in there, no air ventilation or air con, but is exciting to watch boxing matches, muay thai boxing and wrestling. Everyone here is so kind and always willing to go the extra mile to help out. This is the only gym that I've ever looked forward to attending. I took the jiu-jitsu class there for about half a year (til I moved), and I'd say it's been a good first experience with the sport. The gym itself can be a bit intimidating initially. Walking in for the first time I felt like fresh meat on the prison yard. But that impression changed when I saw that the people are generally cool and helpful. I found that if you keep a humble attitude and show determination to learn, they are willing to help you learn. But, if you're a jerk, you're gonna get knocked around. Overall, like I said before, it was a good experience and I'd recommend training there... unless you're a jerk! read more

UMA & Fitness, honestly, was a bit of a frustrating process in the beginning. They are difficult to reach on the phone, not the best with callbacks, and their website is not the best designed and does not have pricing information. These factors made it challenging gathering the information I needed. However, they came highly recommended from a friend of mine, and for this reason I persisted in trying to find out what they were all about. After I connected with them, I received a sincere apology for not being able to get in touch with them, and they graciously gave me a 7-day pass to try them out. I felt as if we were off to a much better start now. Well, what the UMA & Fitness staff members are all about is getting your butt in SHAPE! I'm not kidding, UMA & Fitness, surprisingly turned out to be THE best fitness kickboxing class I have ever found, and I've been doing this for almost 7 years. For this reason, I UNEQUIVOCALLY am giving them 5 stars. I signed up and received my brand new pair of boxing gloves with my membership, my gloves to keep forever! (I take only Fitness kickboxing, not Muay Thai so that is the sole area this review applies to) The fitness kickboxing instructor is pleasant, personable, and professional. Her routines are extremely challenging, high energy, they will make you sweat, and if you have not worked out regularly, will probably have you in pain for a few days(as they did me), but it is worth it! The vibe, though it's mostly men, is completely unintimidating. Everyone is there to work out. Period. I trip over my damn jump rope at least 20 times a night and no one even cares. Now, this gym is no frills. When I arrived the area felt a bit sketchy, and I was a little scared off by all of the junked up and burned up cars there, until I realized that there is a VW restoration place in the same parking lot and those cars were supposed to be there. The gym is a roll up garage door, and inside all you see is mirrored walls, rubber mats and punching bags, like a warehouse. It smells like teen aged boys. :0 Don't go marching in there in full hair and makeup asking where the steam room or the juice bar are! LOL Parking can be problematic, however, there is a long, paved entrance into the parking lot where you can park, and street/residential parking is available too. All in all, I highly recommend anyone to at the very least go for a week and try the Fitness Kickboxing or any of the other classes. You have nothing to lose, and I think you'll be pleased at the quality of the classes. Plus, the Fitness kickboxing class is offered 7 times a week with both morning and evening time slots, so fitting the class in your schedule shouldn't be too difficult. I have tried out several classes over the years, and all of them were at fancy gyms with all the bells and whistles, but with mediocre instructors. UMA & Fitness simply gives me the best workout I've ever had. I for one will pick that over a fancy gym with a steam room any day. UMA & Fitness TOTALLY ROCKS! Love, love, love this place! The coaches are the best! The workouts are designed to give you a total body workout. You burn calories, tone and build strength all in one workout. The workouts consist of boxing and circuit training. I've tried joining gyms and paying for personal trainers and nothing stayed consistent. I tried a two month trial on Group On and loved it. This is the only place I can go where the classes have plenty of room to workout, fun, challenging, full of variety and it's affordable. The people are really nice and encourage each other, too!
