We did request an extra blanket and it was brought to our room promptly. Location wise, this hotel is close to the highway (but we didn't hear it from our room). The pool was a little chilly at first, but once you got used to the temperature it was great. The hot tub was also very welcoming though I had problems figuring out how to turn on the jets as nothing was clearly marked (there are timer buttons and not something that you have to turn to start, just look by the red button). Breakfast was your typical hotel breakfast with eggs, bacon, potatoes, oatmeal, cereal, waffles, and an assortment of both breads and drinks. Breakfast was available from 6-9, and it was refilled multiple times when I was there around 8.

The Quality Inn Card left in all the rooms GUARANTEES your satisfaction and tells you their rooms will be HOSPITAL QUALITY clean. Don't do it. And don't ever stay in a hospital with "that kind" of "clean". The person at the front desk, and the cleaning people are all you need to know about the hotel in Whytheville VA. We prayed we didn't bring any roaches home with us. Toilet was broken, my husband had to fix it. Sink was leaking, yet everything was made of plastic. No shampoo in the bottles in the shower attached to the wall. Bone dry. When we brought the filthy towels and empty shampoo bottle to the guy at the front desk, he handed us shampoo samples from a RED ROOF INN. Brand new TV - DID NOT WORK. Brand new phone - DID NOT WORK. Could not connect to WIFI. What would you do in an Emergency? Tried using our cellphones to call, and they kept hanging up on us. Contacted Corporate, someone in another country, and they just kept hanging up on us. Their SATISFACTION GUARANTEE is bogus. We were not satisfied, we were disgusted. And they would not offer a refund. We booked through CHOICE HOTELS, not a middle man. Yet they will not refund our money. All I can say to any traveler, if you're ok with staying in a $hithole, and don't care about cleanliness, bugs, or anything working other than a bed, then you are good to go. Based on the filthy room I would not dare attempt eating their breakfast. I would not want to even see that kitchen if the bedrooms were full of bugs. Just don't say you weren't warned. It was gross. And I have stayed in Econolodges, Super 8's and low budget places that were fantastic. This was just gross. And the way their customer service handled it was NOT "satisfactory". They just did not care at all whether or not we were satisfied, despite their GUARANTEE of satisfaction. I know there are people out there who like to sue places that don't meet their expectations, so if you are one of them, by all means go there and see for yourself. Move the ottoman out of the way and you will find all the dead bugs, and some live ones too. Look behind the beds, you will find bugs, dirt, grime, etc. $hit company, and after having tried to get recompensed for our inconvenience, still very unsatisfied.

Our normal route and hotel in Asheville was not possible due to damage from hurricane Helene. Upon our arrival at the hotel an employee handled the check+in of our reservation. She was not very welcoming and kept conversation to a minimum. Since we normally stay at a Holiday inn I wasn't sure of what was part of the overnight stay. I had to ask if there was a complimentary breakfast and then had to ask the hours. Since we hadn't eaten all day we also wanted to go back out to pick up dinner. We asked about the location of a Subway Restaurant and she said it was twelve miles on the other side of the Interstate. Next ,"what else can you recommend'? No answer. We went to our room and decided to make do with drinks and snacks we had brought with us. The bed was extremely high and if I was sitting on it my feet were at least a foot off the ground. The mattress creaked and made all sorts of noise if I rolled over. If I got too close to the center of the bed there was a dip that you fell into. I also noticed several pink drip stains on the bottom sheet and towards the foot of the bed a long black hair. I decided to sleep in my clothes so as to not make contact with the unknown. In the morning I had to pass on a shower because the only handicap grab bar was mounted inside the shower/tub on the far wall. There was nothing to hold onto to assist in climbing over the tub wall. Breakfast was minimal and the employee working the breakfast buffet said she would be putting out more sausage. She also volunteered to refill the muffins. Neither thing happened in the half hour that we waited. My husband had a plain bagel and cup of coffee. I had a cup of coffee, a cup of orange juice, and a banana. Not much breakfast to write a glowing review of. (This was at 7:45 am and the breakfast was supposed to be available from 6 am - 9 am) I did watch a later customer make a waffle. Needless to say on our return trip we will find someplace else to stay. Me thinks not on staying here again!

I really enjoyed studying the paintings, hangings, and decor on higher areas. Horizontal surface area within reach was at a premium, as we had to move some of the decor to make room for our stuff: books, laptops, phones, etc. If you're visiting during colder months and love tending a real fire in the fireplace, be sure to contact the host ahead of time to ensure firewood, etc. is ready and waiting on arrival. The garden is beautiful and the couch on the porch is really comfy. I'd suggest bringing your own throw blankets if you like to curl up in front of the fireplace on the couch. The ones we brought were washable and soft, much more practical than the one decorating the couch. We like to know what we're wrapped in is freshly washed. There are no window coverings! The cottage is truly isolated and the only visitor we saw was a deer walking by the windows. I walked outside while my wife showered at night and found anyone can see in through the steamed up windows. But then again, you're surrounded by forest. The kitchen is small and cute. We brought stuff to warm up in the microwave so it was fine. The fridge was big enough to hold the food we brought for 3-4 days. Cooking a big meal would be a challenge. The WiFi is useless for anything but email. I measured the upload and download speeds by accessing a speed measuring website. The download speed was 200x slower and the upload speed was 800x slower than what I have at home. And I don't have the highest speed offered in my area at home. Dugspur is truly rural. You feel like you are deep in the heart of farms and ranches. In October it was very picturesque. On Sunday we went to IC DeHart Memorial Park to walk some of their trails. It was a 45 minute drive, but well worth it. It was the second week of October and most of the trail was covered with beautiful fall leaves. We took the yellow trail and walked the 3 miles in just under an hour. You want drive past the tennis courts to park by the picnic area, which has toilets with running water. They were out of toilet paper so come prepared. The trail meanders through beautiful woods, and ends back at the DeHart family graveyard. The tombstones tell their own history through several family generations. We talked to a local woman who takes her dog on walks there frequently. She said that the hot summer months are a completely different experience. In August her dog got stung by many hornets while walking the trails so her dog is no longer willing to walk those trails. Hiking in cool October was a great experience with no pests, so plan accordingly. On our way back we enjoyed some ice cream at the town of Floyd's general store. There was an outdoor concert of Latin music for anyone that wanted to sit and listen. It wasn't crowded and several families brought picnics. Instead of heading straight home to Northern VA on Monday, we made a slight detour to walk the High Bridge trail in Farmville, by the Appomattox River. There's a parking lot with restrooms one mile from the bridge. There's no need to go to the state park to park. If you don't want to walk, you can rent bikes in town. Lots of families were doing that. The historical markers explained the bridge's role at the end of the Civil War when Lee surrendered to Grant. The bridge is impressive. Looking down from the bridge was a bit unnerving for me as I don't enjoy heights. We walked the trail down to the river, under the bridge, and then back up the other side. It was a beautiful hike and seeing the old original bridge supports made me appreciate how much amazing engineering was done back in the 1800's. Because of the detour we took to Farmville, we were on back country roads all the way to Culpeper before we hit the divided highway there to take us the rest of the way back to NoVa. It was a beautiful drive on well-maintained two-lane roads and we made good time.
