It's been awhile since my last review, and that was when the only meals I could get were in clamshells delivered by ESD Logistics (thanks, good people!) Since then, I've been promoted, and had the privilege of eating in for the whole week that I was working in Center Camp. Wow! What I had been missing! The thing that impressed me most (other than the overall ambience) was the incredible vegan option. I put it out to the universe this morning: "Man, I would love me some fried chicken tonight" and, amazeballs, there was fried chicken on the menu! I could not believe it. The sautéed mushrooms were perfectly seasoned. The polenta was creamy and the chicken was moist with a satisfying crunch. I sat by myself because after a long day, sometimes you just want to be alone with your thoughts. Someone eventually sat at my table but we didn't really talk except she asked me what time it was and I told her: "6:24." You can refill your drink cup as often as you want and I went for the Grape Drank and then the Gatorade substitute, which I can never remember what it's called. When you're still about 80% liquid from a night on the town and you get in too late, the unlimited Cocoa Pebbles does amazing work on getting you at least somewhat stable to pass out for a few hours, play in traffic, then do it over again. I heard there's other food there, but I wouldn't know, because the staff expertly prepared my Pebbles so well, that the milk itself might as well been pure Swiss chocolate. read more

I've been traveling to BRC's Commissary every summer since 2008. I must say it's one of the best places you can find there. The neighborhood is really great although the surrounding desert is very monotonous. The opening hours are great too, you can drop in almost any time. Sometimes there's even live music and commedy! Here are my pros and cons: + Great neighborhood + Great opening hours + Romantic interior + Great for birthday parties + Excellent recycling system + Bouncers are very picky + Perfect shelter during dust storms, rain and evacuations + Good AC (I've only been there in summer) + Cheap + All you can feed + Staff mostly tattooed but not rude at all + Very clean bathrooms (in comparison) + Hidden fans blow your plates everywhere + American cuisine + Cliente usually very excited - Carnivoirs and vegetarians accepted - Toasters are too slow - Pepper is a joke - Hidden fans blow your plates everywhere - Wifi's content is dull - No nudity - My traveler's cheques were not accepted - People talk very loud (about ephemeral matters) All in all a great place, also for tourists. I've been eating here regularly for the past 10 years and I have to say that after some rocky ups and downs, the food and service has really stabilized. The staff isn't drunk or armed, the food is hot, and the lines only really get unbearable in late August. The buffet is nice, with a good salad bar and there's always an excellent dessert selection. The staff don't seem to mind if you play with your food, fall asleep on your plate, or make fanciful concoctions of chocolate milk, FrootLoops®, and pineapple, so long as you don't waste any of it. The fare is pretty middle-of-the-road, meat and starch Americana, but it'll fill you up and keep you fueled for whatever your day holds in store. Things that could use improvement: - No reservations - The self serve drinks station is always a clownshow since by then you're holding a plate and silverware and possibly a toddler, and then you have to scoop ice from the cooler and operate the spigot without dropping everything everywhere. Plus it's in a corner so everyone has to cram into the same space. - The tables are really too close together, which makes for some good finger smashing and to-your-seat jockeying. On the plus side, you get to meet some great people. - The corkage is outrageous so I'm taking off one star - I'm not sure if the salt shakers are full of salt or just filled with dust - Cheese with every meal! read more

Whenever I'm in Black Rock City I find myself eating 99% of my meals here. I'm not sure if it's the service, the atmosphere, the clientele or the food but something keeps me coming back again and again. On the negative side I keep on asking for a wine list and the staff looks at me like I'm crazy. I heard they might add a food truck for the other side of the city in 2018. read more

I can't tell you how many dark nights of caring for people at EMS (who decided the bike obstacle course was a good choice after visiting approximately 13 bars) were significantly brightened by delivery from the Commissary. No one, and I repeat no one, including every single orthodox jew vegan on the playa, can resist bacon being delivered straight to them, warm. Nothing says "I'm definitely coming back to EMS next year" like a four foot stack of styrofoam containers filled with real food. I think I heard that they did away with letting us have chits like they used to, so I give one star off. read more

The service sucks. I was told to "go to the next person" to scan my badge. Also... the food is mediocre at best. Don't get me started on the entitlement of the ass holes who push their way through line. Your best bet is to leave before the ass holes get to playa or figure something else out because the rangers will push you into the tables causing your shorts to rip. read more

This place has made a ton of improvements over the past few years, and I've been delighted by their enthusiasm and efforts to accommodate its customers. My biggest critique is that sometimes it can be hard to find a table, and after being seated I am stuck waiting for a server --sometimes up to an hour or so. Usually they have a buffet set up, which is nice, since finding a waiter is so hard, and that's something they've really improved upon recently. All in all this place is really great, and a perfect place to bring dates, families, or even taking the ol' little league team out for some post-game fun! read more

I've never had a bad meal here, but I guess my standards live on a sliding scale. Considering the food is way better than the Alfred E. Packer Memorial Food Tent at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, it's quite out of the way for an East Coaster. Only been able to get there 10 times since 1996, but it was worth the drive each time. Marvelous variety and generous serving size. They also proudly offer a condiment found in few other establishments called Playa.Some kind of SouthWest mineral thing with a Spanish name. I'll give it a solid four stars. The coffee needs work, and the waitstaff are well nigh impossible to find. Most days I give up and just go get the food myself. Breakfast isn't very great most of the time, and early isn't my thing, but the other meals are anywhere from not bad to really good and if the main course isn't to your liking, the salad bar is always a winner.
