It was our last resort. Literally. I walked into our unit for the first time once we were handed the keys and it immediately smelled like cigarette smoke from the previous tenants. Within the first week we cleaned grime and gunk from every window in the unit by hand, yet I'm betting management made sure to hit the previous tenants with the "cleaning fee" during their move-out. Maintenance did a great job creating a facade of cleanliness and orderliness of the apartment grounds by using a leaf blower to stir dust and dirt around in the stairwells, yet if you had a maintenance request in the unit, best of luck to you. During winter we had a leak in the window of the second bedroom due to all the rain and snowfall of the season and it leaked onto our furniture and personal items. Thankfully, we put in a maintenance request to get it fixed before more damage could be done. I am happy to report our maintenance request was eventually honored....in the middle of March...by one elderly crew member walking into the room and saying they would call someone to get it caulked from the outside....oh and that didn't get done for another month. Stellar job maintenance crew. In terms of management, yikes! Move out procedure was difficult as we had to call multiple times to get updates on what needed to be done for moving out. It seemed there was a clear level of disinterest in us as tenants once we were no longer providing more cashflow for the apartment owner. We spent a full day after we moved out sweeping, scrubbing, mopping the floors, cleaning the windows (we weren't gonna get dinged for window grime), vacuuming the floors, cleaning the bathrooms, you get the idea. It was real awesome getting 1/4 of our deposit back for "cleaning fees, painting fees, and carpet repair". I guess no matter what we will get charged for window grime. Don't forget I said the apartment was disgusting and grimy when we first moved in. We tried the whole "leave it better than you found it" approach but either we are blind or they are greedy. I will say we did have one cat that scratched some of the carpet in the second bedroom entry way, but $400 to repair an entry way? Maybe I should get into the carpet repair business if it's that lucrative, or maybe management is being dishonest and up-charging repairs. We were charged at a previous residence for the same thing, but to the tune of $150, which was understandable and we took responsibility without complaint. Management will bite you any chance they get to keep as much of your deposit as possible. So even though they say small nail-holes are allowed, it turns out you're going to get charged for cleaning and painting. What an absolute joke. This was a literal last resort for us and we are happy to have moved out of there. If you're a prospective tenant looking for an apartment to rent in Bend, I would caution you against renting at The Commons. This is my TED Talk on just maintenance and management alone and how they're going to rip you off given the opportunity. They seem nice but like to send you to collections as soon as they can. I left the complex with a request to forward any final charges to an address and never received any bill. Then last week I got a letter(the bill collector had the right address they didn't?) from a bill collector saying that I owed the commons money. After reaching out to the manager Jessica(whom said she sent the bill I never received) I was told that she could not accept the payment because they already paid the bill collector. After nearly 3 years of on time payments(for an apartment that was very over priced) and perfect rental history it seems they are going out of their way to send folks to a bill collector. Therefore ruining rental history, and credit. FYI they will try to overcharge you on move out, in my case by more than double what was owed, which was adjusted after I disputed the charge. Don't rent here they are shady!! read more

The complex is beautiful however that is where the good review ends! The management staff is the reason I'm moving I can no longer deal with those petty women. Jessica and Leanna are extremely difficult and nit pick over everything but only if they pick you out. Needed appliances replaced and had me wait hours only to replace with another broken fridge. Spoiled a full fridge of food twice! Over $200 wasted and not even a sorry. I applied for help with rent due to losing hours at my job and have been harassed even though it's against the new laws when applying for assistance. No bike storage.. trash area is a joke and smells so bad! It's always full so good luck trying to throw your trash and recycling away. I've called and emailed corporate several times about issues I won't list here and NOTHING.. the managers and corporate are A JOKE! Do not rent here! Over priced for what this place offers. I lived at the Commons for 3 years. Overall it was a great experience. Location is fantastic, right in the middle of Bend and right next to Pilot Butte. We had good neighbors for the most part and the people that I ran into around the complex seemed nice/clean/friendly. Didn't have any complaints about property management either. They were friendly and also not too pushy on the one or two occasions that my room mates and I couldn't scrape together enough cash to make the rent payment on time. I enjoyed my stay here and have many good memories at this place. read more

My Husband and I live close to 3 hours away from Bend. In preparation to move within a month, I had called multiple rental companies in regards to openings as well as general questions. I made a call to The commons at Pilot Butte on Monday the 12th of March, to hear that there were no openings in the near future. I made small talk with the woman I was speaking to. She took my name and number and told me that she would contact me when something came up that met my needs. On Friday the 16th of March I received a call from the woman notifying me that a one bedroom had just opened up. We discussed all the details and I told her my Husband and I would make a special trip in order to view the unit the following Monday at 1:00 pm. My Husband and I drove down Sunday with awful weather over the pass and stayed at a hotel that night. When we arrived 10 minutes early in the rental office the next day, a woman was sitting at the right desk with brown curly hair. I introduced myself and let her know we were early. She replied with "Oh, your here for the 1 bedroom, it is taken." She was smiling, so I immediately asked if it was a joke. She replied "No, I see you have an appointment here, and it was rented out on Saturday." I asked if she was the woman I had spoken with on Fridday, which she was not, I then asked why I had not received a call to cancel my appointment. She said she was not sure. I explained that my Husband and I lived 3 hours away, made a special trip to see this apartment, and between the hotel/gas/food we spent $400 JUST to see this unit. With a smile on her face she was speechless. This woman had no remorse for our situation. I asked her to communicate the predicament that the former woman I talked to on the phone had put us in. She smiled, again. I have been in customer service management for close to 8 years. I have would never tolerate this incompetence towards responsibility or classless and disrespectful behavior. In the end, I am thankful this happened because I would never expect anything to get done or my needs to be met with the staff this apartment currently has. My suggestion: Keep looking, just like we did! read more

The Commons' office staff--Ashley and Cindy--are extraordinarily friendly and helpful.  When we were trying to relocate on a tight timeline, they bent over backwards--working with us after hours on evenings and weekends--to get us approved and moved in. The apartments are very nice--recently renovated and well-insulated.  The complex itself is nicely landscaped and maintained and remarkably quiet. Other reviews complain that the rents are too high, but, in our shopping, the Commons' rates certainly appear in line with comparable units available in the area. read more

Just moved in a couple of weeks ago. Office staff was professional, kind, energetic.. They were also very accommodating. My unit had new carpet, flooring, blinds and counter finishes upon move in. I'm in a 2 bedroom/1 bath. The floor plan feels quite open and spacious...feels much larger than it is. I'm on the ground floor and rarely hear any noise from my neighbors. (I mean, it's apartment living, you will hear your neighbors from time to time.) I won't lie, they run a little higher than a comparable unit in this area, however, you cannot beat the location! Pilot Butte steps away, no road noise, well maintained complex. Had an issue with my dryer shortly after move in. Maintenance was here in 45 minutes and the issue was resolved. I highly recommend. DO NOT MOVE HERE I REPEAT DO NOT MOVE HERE. The management is not helpful by any means. When moving in they told us the tenants above us were terrible and caused 5 previous tenants to move out due to being rude and loud. We were told to send videos of them being noisey after writing management complaints multiple times. We sent videos and they still refuse to do anything about it. Then they threatened us when we were late on rent only asking for a couple day extension and I quote " You would NOT be able to pay once I file with the court. You would have to vacate the apartment. You DO NOT want to go this route. " all around a horrible place to live. The toilets won't flush even with just a moderate amount of toilet paper. The water heaters are very poor leaving the water cold after just washing dishes. The back deck is literally slanted from no support beam installed making it highly dangerous and loose. They also withhold part of your security deposit if you move out before 18 months meaning if you only stay for a 12 month lease you will not get your full security deposit back regardless if you do the full 12 months on the lease. This place is not suitable for family leaving with teenagers dealing weed and throwing parties causing one lovely neighbor to move out because management wouldn't do anything about it. If you've read this far I usher you do not give them the time of day. read more

this place sounded nice when we moved in but then this new lady took over management and now the commons at pilot butte are just rediculous. now the rent is going to be 950 for a two bedroom two bathroom (pretty expensive). there is no smoking cigarrettes on property which is a nice thing for the non smokers and you are not allowed to drink alcohol outside of your apartment which is probably good but theres a thing with that rule. if you like to have a couple beers and smoke a couple cigarettes the only place to do that is out at the sidewalk where they force everyone that smokes to smoke there. we cant smoke on property or drink on property, so we go outfront to do that and going out to the sidewalk has caused a problem. the lady that took over the management office claims that residents in the apartments have been complaining about people smoking and drinking outfront. WHERE ELSE ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO IT!!! and now the lady is sending out notices of violation for drinking outside the apartment when i dont drink on property so how is that even right. its just not. and the lady doesnt live here in the apartments, so why does she even care? its not like people are falling down out there or getting into fights, its just a group of people that get together later in the evening ususally, just having fun with eachother and its not a bunch of teenagers messing around, we are all over the age of twenty one and consenting adults. i will be moving out pretty soon just saying. we try to follow the rules and we dont smoke on property or drink on property and yet we still get threatened with eviction. its really just disrespectful and honestly it just goes to show how conceded that lady is how much she really just doesnt know what she is talking about at all. on the other hand, adam, micheal and every other employee at the commons is very nice. so its up to you on living here. im just saying that if you like to have a couple beers and smokes with your friends, then living here just isnt for you. seems like the lady wants everyone to just stay in their apartments and nobody is allowed to be neighborly i guess. cindy is her name by the way. it seems like she is trigger happy to evict people. in the second month i was here there were at least 8 evictions in one month. how rediculous is that? i will say that living here seemed nice when we got here but no longer read more
