If you like history, Cold War history, or Cold War history from the point of view of those who lived it, then I can't recommend this tour enough. It will take you to some of the key locations in Prague where significant events took place from the Communist takeover in 1948 until the revolution in 1989.
I took the tour on November 18th, one day after the anniversary of the start Velvet Revolution and the feeling in the air was palpable. Our tour guide Ladislav was energetic, quick witted, and very knowledgeable about Czech Cold War history. He led us to a variety of locations around Old Town and provided a wealth of background information while sharing photos and news clippings to illustrate and provide context. Ladislav provided enough background to easily imagine what Czech life was like during the Cold War. Especially moving was the large memorial of candles and wreaths on Národní Street. My hometown is where the opening battle of the American Revolutionary War was fought and we were steeped in the history of the Revolution. That may explain the sense of kinship I felt towards Czech's people's struggle for independence. As Ladislav explained the events and people associated with the Velvet Revolution, I watched the faces of people stopping at the memorial. No canned tour, book, nor movie could ever provide you with the insight I gained from watching the expressions of the Czech people as they lit candles and paid their respects.
After a generous amount of time at the memorial, Ladislav shepherded us onto the trolley to our final destination - the nuclear bunker. Other reviewers have done a good job illustrating the facilities and equipment in the bunker. As fascinating as the gear was, gaining an understanding of mindset of the period was even more interesting and valuable to me. Unquestionably the bunker would provide excellent blast and fallout protection. However, unless the exchange was brief and localized, no outside help would be forthcoming once the bunker's resources were exhausted . Government assumptions about shelter operations underlined that poor civil defense planning that was/is the norm for both sides.
Our tour guide Ladislav is an excellent host and tour guide and makes an excellent ambassador for the Czech people. Cue cards and photos are all good and well, but they won't have the fervor and passion that first hand knowledge gives. The personal experiences he shared made the history much more real and tangible and was the key ingredient that made the tour so special. Ladislav was gracious enough to answer more questions after the tour ended as we walked back towards Old Town Square together. Děkuji. read more
