Over the last few months, I have spent a lot of time at Boulevard and as Tatiana the owner gets to know you, you become not only a loyal customer but a friend. Her events are awesome and something that Dyker needs. Working in Manhattan sometimes I'm just too tired to stay around in the city for a book signing or cooking class - Boulevard offers regular events such as this and it's only a couple of blocks away from our apartment. Poetry readings, psychic readings, meet and greets - I was so surprised to see such great monthly events when I first stopped in and each event is interesting and fun. The ones that have a cost attached to them are minimal fees and even though I don't have kids, I noticed Boulevard has a ton of kids book events and arts and crafts. They know you by name, track all of your purchases and have a loyalty program where you get a $5 coupon occasionally with your purchases. I joined the book club and the other customers in the store get to know each other and look forward to seeing each other at different events. I've also found some totally random kitschy books here for gifts that people have loved. As for the book selection, even if it's not as big as a chain bookstore, Boulevard has a great variety of books. Best sellers, secret finds, popular series - they have them and in almost every genre including a big kids and teen section. Boulevard feels homey and warm when you come in and like I said, Dyker really needed a place like this. I'd rather give Tatiana and her awesome staff my money than Barnes and Noble or Amazon. Considering how much I spend there, I may be asking them for a second job soon!

Your best bet is if you're looking to buy a kids book and you may have some luck in teen fiction. There's an art studio in the back if you want to do some painting. I've bought 5 books from two Powerhouse locations in the last 8 days, and regularly go way of my…read moreway to buy from here instead of Amazon, so I have to say I am disappointed that the staff would not allow a 7 year old with a bathroom emergency to use the bathroom -- you know, the bathroom located in the children's book section and that previously has been available for this purpose over the last several years. Literally, half the store is children's books, it's just a matter of time til this new policy backfires spectacularly and unhygienically. Who does that? Who sees a little kid desperate to use the bathroom and tells them to go across the street to some cafe? Who treats another human being that way? And I bought two books anyway, because you have to support independent bookstores if you want to keep them, even if they treat you like human garbage.

Tons of zines on every subject imaginable (composting, gardening, witchcraft, gay/queer subjects, politics, and more). Little booklets, funky cards and books. I picked up several cheeky cards I can't wait to send to friends. They also have records, crystals/stones, tchotchkes, small decor items. I think they also do tarot in the back. And they have a cute shop cat! The store decor is a lot of fun, with mirrors, political posters, a large ram that plays on the ventilation system. There is a lot here you won't find anywhere else.

They have a nice curated selection of books, the staff are willing to help with finding a specific book, and they got a great gift and card selection. Every time I walk in here, I'm always tempted to get their gifts (soaps, lotions, small desk objects, kitchenware, stickers, hair claw clips, etc.). And I do! My friends have loved the gifts I buy from here. I also buy all my greeting cards from here, because they also have a nice sale basket of cards. I walked in and I was first pleasantly surprised I saw so many black authors and new releases right off the bat. I say this as someone that reads all authors but it is important to see diversity of books in my bookstores. I visit bookstores often and make it my business in every city I visit. Now this bookstore is HUGE. Way bigger than expected. I thought the bottom level was the entire bookstore and boy was I wrong. Turns out there is a big first level and 2 more levels from there. I was in book heaven. Great selection of books, lot of of themes. They also had a section for blank journals/crafts and a coffee/drink bar. The staff were super friendly in helping me find the books I was looking for. Also the cashier was nice enough to give me a tote for being a visitor to NY which was nice of him. Definitely the place for mystery books... who knew there were so many? This could have had every topic ever written, and you would've convinced me it was a 'regular' bookshop. There are also used and signed volumes. Legend has it one is hollowed out in the shape of a wrench. Pardon my failing old man memory, but I believe it was friendly employee Mike that I had a nice chat with at the back of the store (maybe *too* friendly.
