When reading the other reviews, it seems like this event wasn't as great compared to others in the past. However, with this being my first, I thought it was nice. I was welcomed warmly by an employee. He was really sweet and we chatted a bit. Entering into this Royce establishment does make you feel a little bougee. I felt like I was buying perfume or a Gucci bag! haha The vibe does make you feel like you're buying luxurious chocolate, though. I've never heard of Royce or tried their chocolates before and was highly impressed at the quality and taste of this Japanese chocolate! I was able to sample two; one was white chocolate and the other one was milk chocolate/hazelnut with cocoa powder dusted on the outside (I think...haha). Anyway, I LOVED the white chocolate one! WOW! I'm still thinking about the amazing taste and texture of it. The tote bag was super cute! I loved the slogan on it. I did wish there were more chocolate samples in the bag, but I'm not complaining! Love visiting and learning about ROYCE' Chocolates. The decadent chocolates are precisely crafted using the smoothest ingredients. Founded in 1983, ROYCE' has been making exquisite confections in Hokkaido, which is the northernmost island of Japan. The cool climate is the perfect environment for creating these delicious creamy treats. The first store in the US opened in 2012 on Madison Avenue in NYC. Interesting to hear about the store in Houston, in the heart of Chinatown. So lucky to be able to sample three Nama Chocolate flavors. My hands down favorite was the Nama Chocolate Champagne Pierre Mignon. Made with milk chocolate and fresh cream and lightly infused with champagne, it just melts in your mouth for an exquisite treat of unbelievable flavor. The Nama Chocolates need to be refrigerated as they are made with fresh cream. They are packed with an ice pack for the drive home. They are good for about 30 days, if they last that long. So many other delicious treats are available to purchase as well, like their famous chocolate covered potato chips, pistachio chocolates and chocolate coins. Another wonderful Yelp elite event! In addition to the fun swag bag that I received, also got to sample their famous Nama chocolates. The OG Nama chocolates has liqueur with cocoa beans from Hokkaido and the other one did not have liqueur with cocoa beans from Ecuador, both which were excellent melt-in-your mouth style chocolates! Yum! We also sampled the different chocolates from the swag bag and they were all delicious as well, although I still personally favor the Nama chocolates because it just tastes so smooth and silky. Was surprised to see they now even sell mooncakes! That is definitely a new item. The most surprising item in the swag bag is the cute little yelp tamagotchi. Brings me back to my childhood! My 8 year old is now taking care of a tamagotchi dog he named Tom and bugs me and my husband to take care of it while he's at school, lol. We stopped by over the weekend, and the experience felt impersonal compared to the event last year. While one staff member went into the back to retrieve the goodie bags, the remaining staff gave us two tiny samples (quarter of a normal piece). He didn't explain the flavors until we asked, and after that there was just an awkward silence so we walked around and checked out the shelves. Unlike past events, there were no introductions of the product, the company or any recommendations. If the goal is to introduce new customers to Royce's chocolate and encourage purchases, this experience missed the opportunity. The chocolate is still smooth and excellent, but the customer service was a noticeable step down. That said, I still appreciate Yelp and Royce for organizing the event! read more

I love the Community Experience events at ROYCE', but unfortunately this particular visit was not it. Stopped by early evening after work (around 4:45-5 ish) and walked in to no greeting. Cool. My companion was with me and she instantly picked up on the energy. We started to look around browsing and taking pictures. Shortly after we were offered samples. My companion was trying to make small talk with the gentleman there asking him what was his favorite chocolate. He replied and that was it. We grabbed our Yelp tote and that was that. Customer service should be at the forefront for events like this, but in general. People want to feel welcomed when entering an establishment and unfortunately the guy there missed the mark. Finally made it to this place! This place is in Chinatown and is a quaint little shop. This place is cutter and has all the selections. I sampled the alcohol infused milk chocolate and the dark chocolate sample. Both good and I like the fact that they have to remain chilled. I was excited for another ROYCE Community Experience this year, having attended some of their previous events. I visited on a Saturday evening and the store employee gave me samples of two types of NAMA chocolates which I enjoyed very much. I decided on the cherry liqueur milk NAMA chocolate to purchase. I picked up a Yelp swag bag as well which I found to be a cute canvas tote design. I found the experience to be more impersonal compared to previous visits. The employee explained the flavors of the two NAMA chocolates but did not provide as much of an intro to the store or other items, and I was a bit disappointed by the minimal chocolate in the bag as previously they've given more unique offerings. That being said, I am thankful for Yelp Houston and Jando for organizing and it was fun to visit Chinatown and purchase some delicious chocolate! read more

I'm not a big fan of chocolate but this spot is legit and tbh their product is high in quality, not that cheap chocolate. This is my 4th time here. Twice for elite week. Appreciate Jando & the yelp team for picking this place once again. They have a good variety to pick from. If you're not craving Milk/Dark Chocolate. They also have matcha, white chocolate, strawberry etc. I arrived on a Friday around 6pm & the employee who helped me was alright. I felt like he just wanted to get me in and out. I would've like to hear the history of Royce but I didn't get that. No worries because I just wanted to get my goodie bag, purchased a few items and get the heck up out of there. I only got to try 2 samples. One of them had a bitter aftertaste which I wasn't a fan of. The other one was solid. Creamy and melt in your mouth and had the perfect amount of sweetness. I decided to get their fruit bar chocolate (strawberry) & Nama chocolate (strawberry). I had the fruit bar before and it was delicious. It reminds me of a Kit Kat with strawberries instead of milk chocolate. Creamy, sweet and had a good crunch. Overall, it was cool. Staff could be better but I was content with my purchase. Another fun Yelp experience that I had the pleasure of attending. This one was a sort of quick experience at ROYCE' and included some samples in store as well as a cute Yelp swag bag. I found this event sort of lacking? It was nice to revisit ROYCE and see what was in season but it was also mostly just a pick up a swag bag and go sort of event. The swag bag was awesome, including mostly Yelp swag which had a cute tomagotchi so that was a fun surprise throwback but had minimal ROYCE based goodies. I think there were 3 samples of chocolate but I wish I at least knew what the samples were of in case I wanted to buy more. The only "in store" experience was sampling some of the melt-in-your-mouth nama chocolate (which is a ROYCE specialty). It was great to sample them but that's also a standard practice of the shop and I do usually walk away with some sort of chocolate. This time I got some tea chocolates, which sounded awesome. Overall, I enjoyed this event because it gave me an added reason to go back to ROYCE. It just didn't seem much like an "event" or "experience" in the sense that it was mostly just a grab your swag bag and head out sort of deal. The flexibility of the ~month long event makes it a plus and I can see why there wasn't added fanfare cause that would be too much but just wish there was just a touch more. read more

I loveee Royce Chocolate and am so happy for this Yelp Community Experience! The swag bag (cute tote btw) came with a few samples of chocolates, stickers, snack clip, a fan, and get this - a tamagatchi! Crazyyy and so cool. They also had samples of their Nama chocolates available, which roughly translate to meaning "fresh" and is such a delicate, melt-in-your-mouth texture, much like a ganache, and of course their chocolates are most famous for being made with dairy that comes from the cool-climate and nutrient-rich Hokkaido (from the volcanoes I assume), an island known as Japan's breadbasket. They also offer potato chips coated in chocolate chip, which is a delicious sweet and salty combo! Honestly the perfect snack. That's right you read that correctly and it's not a grammatical mistake, when translated from Japanese into English, it was stylized as ROYCE'S to show possession or belonging (as in, "the shop of Royce") and eventually simplified to just ROYCE'. Upon walking in, I was greeted by Crystal and Elliot and was instructed to sign in with the Yelp QR and was asked my name for their records. And the canvas Yelp tote awaited full of gifts! Omg wow thank you Yelp and Royce' for the samples in store and in the tote. The chocolate is exquisite. These tiny squares are perfectly balanced and melt in your mouth. There are special humidity and temperature controls in the store and when you buy it, it is packed especially and the cool pack will last 2-3 hours and it is worth every dollar. The Community Experience at Royce' Chocolate was nice and intimate. Right away, I was greeted with a warm welcome from Mia and Crystal as they gave me four samples. One of the samples was a strawberry chocolate truffle which included a little bit of strawberry liqueur. The other three chocolate truffles were milk chocolate, dark chocolate and chocolate caramel which didn't include liqueur but they were nothing short of delicious and I especially appreciated the smooth textures. The ambiance of Royce' Chocolates was super elegant. I plan to recommend this place to friends who have a sweet tooth or anyone who is looking to give out a unique gift. I thought it was cool that Royce' Chocolates offers a variety of chocolate: traditional, truffle, chocolate bars (compared to KitKats), seasonal items (such as chocolate pistachio), chocolate bears & more. I think out of all my yelp elite experiences this has been the most underwhelming. I wasn't able to attend the event right when it kicked off 2 weeks ago, so I went this past weekend. There weren't any yelp swag/chocolate goodie bags and the guy did say they were out of stock of a lot of things and that the shelves are usually fuller. I was the only one in the store and the attendant was really nice to explain the chocolates, but only after I asked him what I was tasting. I tasted the Mild Milk and the Ecuador Sweet. Both of them were actually pretty good. It was a bit awkward with just me in the store so I did ask a few questions about how long they had been open, about how the chocolate is stored, how long it lasts...etc. The attendant was pretty knowledgeable and was able to answer all of my questions, which I did appreciate. I browsed around the store and came across the chocolate covered potato chips which I thought was pretty interesting. I asked him about them, and then that is when he mentioned he had them available to taste. I tried the dark chocolate, I would say it had a good balance with the bitterness of the chocolate and the saltiness of the chip which gave it a good sweetness. Overall, I know never to have extreme expectations but since most of the other events I have been to were amazing I was expecting the same for this. I've been to a Yelp event at Royce Chocolate years ago, and I remember it being good. This visit, unfortunately, was a flop. I visited on a weekend afternoon when the Yelp swag was completely out. After giving the attendant my name, I got to try a piece of their dark chocolate and a chocolate covered potato chip. They were good, but the attendant was a bit awkward. He was friendly but was quick to move his attention to the next (non-Yelp) patron. I love chocolate, so I took a few minutes to browse their limited selection and purchased a milk chocolate bar for myself to take home. Now that I'm home, I really like how creamy and luscious the chocolate bar is. Regardless of my subpar experience, I'm still thankful to Jando for holding this event in the Chinatown area. It is one of life's unexpected joys to randomly run into Jando S. This is one of several recent elite experiences where I ran into Jando at the giveaway location since I was actually in town on the first day of the experience, most recently at Brassica and the Notre Dame production at the Wortham. Royce is Hokkaido-based with an emphasis on the nama chocolate, nama meaning fresh in this circumstance. If you follow any food/travel bloggers that have ever passed through Japan, they probably use some version of nama in their username, catch phrase, or otherwise. I would know since I nearly died in Japan last year during sakura season and was promptly hospitalized as soon as my plane landed back in US and A. Chocolates had nothing to do with my moderate good luck that let me survive the same medical event that killed my dad nearly a decade ago, also in the Pacific region which seems to have been rather sore with my bloodline since Fukushima. It was still a great trip and I aim to go back to Japan. Until then, Royce is much closer than KIX Airport with its storefront along Bellaire in the Chinatown stretch between Gessner and the 8. There was no introduction to the brand, history lesson, or pointing out cool things to me upon entry from the two Royce workers behind the register. It was simply swag bag over in the corner, samples at the counter, and sayonara. I had mixed feelings about this in the rainy drive home with Blake Whiten's "Boots by the wrong bed" for atmosphere. The emphasis of Royce is on nama chocolate, so the chocolate should speak for itself and it certainly does. The strawberry seasonal exclusive was DIVINE. The one that was not strawb was still fine, but not as devastatingly impactful as the strawb. If you've seen the film version of Requiem for a Dream you already know what that sequence looks and feels like once the strawberry nama chocolate hits your tongue - straight fire. Since the emphasis is on the chocolate, I spent most of the drive leaning towards this not being a bad thing that there was no presentation/introduction/welcome, the chocolates either made you get it or not, and the chocolates along would make you get it. While I am capable of googling things, and did so to learn about Royce before I showed up on the first day of this experience, the reason why I like coming to these experiences at the beginning is that the owner has not answered the same question 4,000 times already and still has light behind their eyes. This was not present here this time. All I know about Royce now is what I knew from googling it. I could have done that from my J.D. Vance-approved sofa. I learned nothing new, except what I already expected that strawberry chocolates are good. I think a bidness misses an opportunity to chat and greet and see if the yelpee has any unique questions. But, Traveller's Cart earlier this year at that experience (which was before all of the murder/suicide stuff afflicted the owners) had the same attitude that they had no presentation or information, you were just there for a pre set menu and try it and leave swiftly. Meanwhile, Brassica just a few weeks ago rolled out the red carpet to tell a story, answer questions, and make it a presentation - a real lunch AND a show. I prefer those kinds of events/experiences, it is a unique opportunity to really gauge whether the bidness has drawn you in successfully or not. If they don't speak your language you are not likely to return. If they do speak your language, you are a built-in regular that will be back many times - that is what happened at Cheeky Nandos, when I got to re-live my time spent visiting the Cheeky Nandos in Oxford when I was a student in England, back when it was a proper country under (shudder) Blair before all of that leave nonsense. The strawberry chocolates are divine, so when visiting during strawberry season this is a must. While I would have liked more of a song and dance routine, the chocolate must stand on its own two feet and it does. Therefore, a five star review for this experience to have come, saw, and conquered my tiny sample of strawberry chocolate. Huge thanks to Jando, his team in Houston, and official yelp for continuing to bring us new and exciting events and experiences in Houston. Many thanks to Royce for opening up their doors and letting us sample the wares and briskly sashaying out in the rain with a fashionable swag bag of goodies, including what appears to be a tamagotchi!! For those who have never been to a Royce store, this particular event would've could have seemed slightly underwhelming. In our previous experience with Royce and the Elite squad, the Royce staff went through the history of the company, the many products and innovations to get there, along with their most current and seasonal offerings. It was a pretty impressive thing and clearly shows that Royce trains their staff very well. Going this time, and while it is nice, we were handed a gift bag and left to browse the store by ourselves to check out the new merch (potato chips seen this year). The whole narrative into the history of the company and the flagship Houston store starting would've been a good touch to hook in new customers. Made it to this community experience at ROYCE' once again this year thanks to Jando, their chocolates never fail to please my palate. I'm still very glad that this chocolate boutique is in Houston and long gone are the days where I wished ROYCE' was close by. The boutique is immaculate and organized with several types of chocolate treats around the shop including chocolate bars, wafers, cookies, truffles, and potato chips. When I entered, I was immediately greeted and I was able to check in on my app to claim the sweet bag of Yelp goods that had a tamagotchi, a paper fan, stickers, plastic bag clip, and a bunch of different individually wrapped chocolates inside. The staff were nice and straightforward with informing me that they were offering two samples of their nama chocolate today so I got to try a caramel milky nama and a darker nama. Both great choices but I leaned more toward the dark one because I love dark chocolates. There wasn't any explanation of the history of ROYCE' like previous years I've attended the event, which I can see getting repetitive for the staff if Yelpers come in frequently and spontaneously. However, I think asking the guest if they'd like to know more about the brand for consensus prior to a tour of the boutique would definitely be beneficial for first timers to ROYCE'. read more

I'm super grateful to attend the Royce Yelp event. I tried Royce's Chocolate a couple times now and love it. Walking in, it was empty and I was the only person in there. This is my second time visiting the wonderful world of Japanese chocolate that is ROYCE. I actually fell in love with their chocolates a few years ago at a wedding rehearsal when someone in the wedding party had just come back from a trip and was offering samples to everyone. I was thrilled to learn we have one in the Houston area I'm always blown away by the flavors and chocolate consistencies. The two samples I tried on my visit were the Nama "Equador Sweet" (dark chocolate) and the Nama "Matcha." Both were incredible. I had tried their dark chocolate(s) before and they're one of my favorites. I wanted to bring a box home? But I had errands to run and didn't want to risk melting or spoiling the chocolates so I grabbed a box of Ghana Bitter hard candy morsels There was only one staff member when I entered and no other guests (it was mid-day on a Friday). I was greeted, checked-in, given my amazing ROYCE & Yelp goodies, received a tasting (fresh samples), and I made a purchase in no time at all. Everything was efficient, the staff member was professional, and the space is immaculate Some tips: Most ROYCE chocolates have storage temperature of 77° F or below. However, Nama chocolates have a storage temperature of 50° F. Luckily, ROYCE wraps your Nama chocolate on a refrigerator-bag that should keep it cold for 2-3hr in room temperature. When asking about leaving the Nama chocolates out I was told, "think of them as milk. You can leave them out, but they will eventually spoil" When you're done you can walk next door to the always fun Claw Mania Kingdom, or you can walk behind ROYCE to Ramen Alley which is another delightful experience that I would never have stumbled upon had it not been for Yelp and these incredible events Thank you ROYCE and Yelp for putting this on, and for providing such delectable treats on a hot Houston day Cheers!! read more

Nicely nestled in Asian town not far from the freeway you'll aee this boitique chocolate shop. Thankful for Yelp and Royce for delighting us with decadent delights. This event/experience was slightly different than I imagined. No bright red Yelp table or warm welcome. When I went the worker was with other customers. I saw the sign to check in I did grabbed a bagged and browsed a bit. I finally got to speak with the worker but it was brief. They asked if I signed in i advised i did. Purchased 1 item and left. Like many of the other comments I feel like the experience could have been a little more informational and more of a chance for them to showcase their products. Although I have had their chocolates before (dark chocolate bar as well as their matcha fruit bars), I would have loved to learn more about other products. We swung by around 4:30PM on a Sunday and it was easy to park and no one was around, probably watching the World Cup finals :) The tasting was simple and straightforward - one piece of dark chocolate, one piece of matcha, a Yelp goodie bag with some more sample pieces to go along with some Yelp merch and stickers. Were they supposed to talk about the origin of things? We didn't really get anything more. It was kind of in-and-out in two minutes, plus a purchase. We had other dinner plans in the area. I suggest others do the same and not make the drive expecting a lot here. Royce always makes delicious, albeit pricey chocolate. Super grateful for the opportunity to check out this unassuming chocolate spot in Chinatown! Walking in, it was a pretty small space. We were greeted warmly and checked in smoothly. The gift bag had a nice spread of different goodies (of course, I wish there was more chocolate!). We were able to sample their white chocolate which was delicious and had a lovely soft texture. It was unfortunate to hear that they were sold out of all of their nama chocolate but we did buy a couple options that were available on the shelves. So happy to experience Royce for another elite week. I went last year, and til this day I speak very highly of the chocolates there. We got to sample 2 chocolates; both were creamy and delectable. My fav of the two was the strawberry one. They had other samples set out, but they said those samples were not available for Yelpers, only to regular customers. Not gonna lie, I was a little sad we couldn't try the other chocolates out for sampling. But rules are rules. On another note, when I went last year, the staff was super informative about how they source their chocolates and went into detail on what makes their chocolate different from the rest. They also talked about the care they put into their packaging and the different types of chocolates they provide. It was a whole experience. This time around, I really didn't get much information besides the names of the chocolates. We got our swag bags, got our samples, and that was it. No presentation on where their chocolates are from or what makes them different. The swag bag was soooo cute omg! The coolest swag bag of the year so far. The Yelp Tamagotchi was such a surprise, super cool. I ended up buying some matcha wafers that were absolutely delicious. The matcha chocolate at Royce is 10/10 read more

It was my first time trying Royce Chocolate, and I absolutely enjoyed this experience with yelp. The chocolate has an incredibly smooth texture that literally melts in your mouth. I also loved the elegant packaging, which makes it perfect for gifting. The staff made the experience even better by offering me two samples of their Nama chocolates, which helped me decide on my favorite. I ended up buying a box for my husband's birthday, and I'm so glad I did. They made sure to wrap it in a cool packaging to keep the chocolate in the correct temperature. Also, the yelp goodie bag had few chocolates in it along with other goodies. I definitely recommend stopping by if you're a chocolate lover. The community experience at Royce Chocolate was great!! Royce Chocolate is a Japanese chocolate brand that makes really high quality chocolate. After checking in, the guy at the counter had us get a Yelp goodie bag and let us sample 2 chocolates of our choice. I personally really like the darkest chocolate they offer that some a hint of Hennessy liquor mixed it, they say it only has 1% liquor, but they are definitely 100% delicious. This particular flavor is seasonal though so I tried their dark chocolate/milk chocolate mixed as well as their matcha chocolate. Then to go, I got their strawberry chocolate and their champagne chocolate. Every flavor is perfectly crafted, made with high quality ingredients, and super smooth/creamy. Thank you Royce Chocolates for hosting a great Yelp Community Event! It's always a pleasure coming here, and I can't wait to come back again to try more of what y'all have to offer. 1st time going to a ROYCE Chocolate Community Experience! Didn't have much expectations going in. Workers were friendly! Didn't catch her name (wore glasses) but she gave a quick spiel on the different chocolates. Got to sample 2 Nama chocolates (half a piece). - Mild Milk (good but a bit too sweet) - Ecuador Sweet (rich, just the right sweetness, ended up buying a box!) Also got the pistachio chocolate bar. Mia and Krystal had great recommendations! Love sampling new Royce Chocolates. The dark chocolate surprised me the most of the 3 I got to try.
