Diana appeared disinterested, unwelcoming and annoyed from the get go. I struggle to articulate my feelings and emotions at the best of time, so when I was having trouble answering a particularly vague question she snapped at me. "YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN" and then explained her question. Towards the end of the session I told her a long-winded story about a fight I'd had with Dad whilst on holiday and how I extended the olive branch to not cause tension in the group even though I was in the right. So at the end of session when she said I "had no mental health problems and my biggest problem was conflict resolution". I asked her how I could have handled the conflict with Dad better and she shrugged She obviously hadn't to a word of what I had said. Then I asked her why or how she came to that conclusion and she changed subject. My close friends and family had all told me to be patient and that I wouldn't get answers straight away. That it would take multiple sessions for a mental health diagnosis. But Diana managed to do it in only one session without listening or paying attention. Not unless you want to be gaslit, DARVO'd and told it is all in your head and a manifestation of mental illness. Even with the QLD Health Ombudsman conceding I was being severely stalked not only in the abusive relationship, but years later whilst I was at Currumbin Clinic, the psychiatrist refused to believe it was happening to me. He wrote in his discharge summary I was only suffering PTSD from the abuse in the relationship and I was merely 'trying to find things' to get the third protection order over the line. Stalking doesn't work like that, not after 5.5 years and I am still discovering it started from that ex partner well before we were in a romantic relationship. This is HIS full blown pathology, not mine. I most certainly have PTSD from his abuse in the relationship, but I would be mostly ok almost four years later if I wasn't still being relentlessly stalked by him. All mental health professionals should be extensively trained in how to detect the signs of DFV and coercive control. Of which stalking is a key component. It's also a key component in the escalation to intimate partner homicide which my ex partner had already tried. The hospital to their credit had to get a hospital liaison officer to call and check my outside treating team who have been with me on this hellish journey for many years and been witness to it all. But my psychiatrist refused to contact or speak with them to check the veracity of the things I was so clearly terrified of himself. He instead ridiculed me, gaslit me, and then DARVO'd me just like abusers do when I challenged his lack of knowledge and expertise. A psychiatrist getting a diagnosis like this wrong could mean death for the victim. Given I am still being stalked and was being stalked long before a romantic relationship was on the table with this dangerous individual, if anything happens to me or my family, like Hannah Clarke and her kids, this is on him. I personally witnessed two other women who were going through acute DFV, one of whom spoke to me about this same psychiatrist and said he was also gaslighting her. She left that night extremely distressed. If anything happens to her, that is also on this psychiatrist. I am only giving the hospital a star for all the auxiliary staff who work there. The lovely cleaners, the lovely nurses who all work hard to try and keep this place running. This particular psychiatrist needs to be thoroughly investigated and his skill set examined and some serious DFV training done before he is allowed near another woman experiencing DFV. He is going to get one of them killed because of HIS lack of experience, not because of their PTSD or their anxiety or depression. God forbid he misdiagnoses them with paranoia like he did me regarding the stalking.

It is a far cry from the horrors of psych care in the public health system, however it is indeed upon the shoulders of each patient to make best the use of the psychiatrists, psychologists and nursing team. All staff are nurturing and caring, professional in their roles and ultimately supportive of helping each patient work towards a more positive mental health. Every person who becomes an inpatient at Currumbin CHOOSES to do so. There are no involuntary patients. Every patient is choosing to try to find a better life outlook for themselves.
