This place was a surprisingly interesting find just off the side of the road in Burnet. It's free…read moreto enter and you can wander around both the outdoor exhibits and the indoor exhibits at your leisure. A volunteer from the local historical society was welcoming and pointed us to a number of interesting objects that we might have overlooked, including a spinning wheel with a very interesting history. The outdoor exhibits are mostly cabins from the frontier era that have been generally outfitted as they might have been back in those times. They're all fascinating to look at and lovingly detailed. There's also a lot of farm equipment that's just kind of parked there; perhaps an exhibit on the evolution of farming would be useful to add? The indoor exhibits are almost overwhelming in the sheer variety of objects, but there's a good amount of explanatory detail (though some of it is a bit... dated). By the time you leave, you'll have a pretty solid appreciation for the local history of Burnet and a bit more for Texas as a whole.

Decided to check out the Beloved Gallery in Marble Falls as I read there was a free exhibition of a…read morefamous childhood artist I knew about years ago, Akiane Kramarik. "Akiane: The Early Years" is a collection of original masterpieces painted by Akiane before the age of 16. I was so excited to know it was up here! You have to reserve a time slot online & I did it early this morning. Note that you cannot bring any handbags in the gallery, just clear bags. Also, no photos are allowed. They watch you like a hawk. We checked in the Beloved Cafe where there's a Concierge who can look up your name. The cafe has Beloved T-shirts, tumblers, mugs, trinkets, wallets, keychains & bags. Bathrooms are on the 2nd floor of the office space next door. You can take an elevator or stairs after the check-in clerk unlocks the door. We were led into the gallery by the Concierge where there was a tour guide starting her presentation by a stunning light blue marble wall as a backdrop. There's also a light blue marble waterfall wall below the gallery. The tour guide briefly explained Akiane's life & how she slowly developed her painting & artistic talent, how her parents used to be atheists & agnostic & how her most famous painting, "Prince of Peace" came about. The owners of the gallery met Akiane & her family obtained some of Akiane's works & that the goal is to receive 1 million visitors to the gallery. I believe they've already had 45,000 visitors from all over the world. The gallery has been opened since April 2023. The guide advocated us spreading the word. You're led to a screening room where Akiane speaks about her journey in a short ~17 minute film from 1:17pm-1:34pm. After the film ended, I asked some questions with the gracious tour guide until she told me we had until 1:55pm because the next tour was going to take place. She appreciated my questions but had to cut us off & said we should read Akiane's biography for more detailed info. We literally only had maybe 10 minutes to view all the paintings so it was a bit rushed. I didn't have enough time to read thru & examine the artwork. I thought the film was a bit lengthy & the room was hot. Hopefully the next time we go we can bypass the film. This is a must-see and inspiration. I didn't know it was up here until today when I was looking at the Christmas events at Marble Falls & their 44 Nights of Holiday Cheer.

Beautiful old Jail that has been around since the turn of the century. The prisoners would be…read morehoused on the top floor and the Sheriff and his family lived on the ground floor. While it doesn't appear to be open it does look like they are restoring it and you can wander around the grounds or outside. There is a cool statue out front of the longest serving Sheriff in Texas: Sheriff Riddle. He was Burnet's Sheriff from 1939 to 1978. Wow! That's impressive. The old jail closed in 1982 so I guess he may have wore it out! I look forward to visiting again when the inside opens up.

Two tickets aboard the Austin Steam Train (the steam locomotive is in for restoration), pulled by a…read moresixties era diesel engine, and nearly a two hour relaxing trip on board the City of Chicago sleeper/dinner car, brought us to the annual Bluebonnet Festival in the "hill country " of central Texas ' historic town of Burnett. A town founded as the county seat in 1852, built on cattle and quarries, steeped in Republic of Texas history pre and post civil war. The field of Bluebonnets viewed from the train were out of sight while at the festival, however rows of giant corn dog, funnel cake and craft stands lined the streets and city square. Cloudy skies did not slow the doghouse or weinerdog races, and the local country and western bands (both kinds) played on through the light showers. A small carnival added entertainment and a few thrills, along with a few entertaining "carnies ". Beautiful Bluebonnets, tastes of Texas BBQ and country culture made for a great day trip, and a drousy train ride back to Austin.

Well, the last time I was driving through Burnet on Highway 29 out to the Highland Lakes in no particular hurry, I finally did just that with the whimsical gigantic metal bluebonnet stationed at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center. Only then did I learn that Burnet is known as the "Bluebonnet Capital of Texas". This was early in the morning on a Saturday, before the place opens at 10am, but they had kindly placed a pair of rocking chairs on the front porch and a packet of brochures of area attractions with a map http://www.burnetchamber.org/BurnetBrochure.pdf for those tourists who might need directions in off hours. AT&T data coverage was spotty for me in this area, so I'd imagine that hard copy map might come in handy for some even in this modern information age. Visitor's Center Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm Saturday, 10 am - 2 pm Burnet is just an hour outside of Austin and a great place to experience "small town Texas" without traveling too far from home. They have the Bluebonnet Festival http://bluebonnetfestival.org/ in April each year, the Rodeo & County Fair in June, the Burnet Tri-Fest in October (with arts, music, and Fort Croghan pioneer-living demonstrations), and of course, all of the nearby lake park activities year round. A day trip drive is no problem, but you can also sometimes take the Hill Country Flyer of the Austin Steam Train Association http://www.austinsteamtrain.org/the-train/locomotives/ from Cedar Park (when seasonal schedules allow).

But it does look good and they decorate for the holidays well. If you are working on your Courthouses of Texas (yeah, it was a thing when I was a kid), then this one's main entrance appears to be on the Eastern side. The north has a great memorial to the veterans of our conflicts.
