DISCLAIMER: I am high-maintenance and love my hairspray. On our way to a wedding up in Eureka, my boyfriend, his roommate and I decided to take a detour and check out Confusion Hill. Having gone to Mystery Spot, I thought it would be a cool place to take a break at. I was so very wrong...Upon arriving, we enjoyed taking pictures through the cutout cardboard displays and had fun trying to figure out why one of us appeared taller than the other. The cost to go in to the actual house was $5 per person, which seemed reasonable. However, for what we got I was disappointed it was not free. This was a mirror image of Mystery House and I was let down that there was no exciting tour guide to pump us up on our short journey through the house. While exploring, I began to feel tingles on my skin. Being that it was summer, I thought it was just too hot and I was being sensitive. But no...that was not the problem. Once we stepped in to the light I had welts and hives all over my arms and legs. I had obviously been attacked by a swarm of bugs. My immediate hatred began to erupt for Confusion Hill and I was enraged with Mother Nature. Irrational? Yes. In all honesty (minus the irrational anger towards Mother Nature), Mystery Spot is more fun and I don't think Confusion Hill was worth making a stop at since I had fallen victim to bug bites. read more

Fun little piece of Americana. It's not Disneyland, but it's so great that this kind of historic roadside attraction is being kept alive. Definitely worth a stop! Also, the gift shop lady is so friendly. read more

Was excited to see what this place had to offer and stretch from the car ride. Was not inside the store for more then five minutes before the creepy guy behind the counter became rude and acted like a jerk. The items in the store are collecting dusk, I'm sure because the prices are extremely high. We promptly left because of how we were treated as I would not spend one dime of my money there. read more

I've been to Confusion Hill twice and both times I've had a pretty good time. It's a big tourist trap!! There are various signs about confusion hill along Hwy 101. After so many signs I wanted to see what it was all about. It's $5 to go into the house and you have to go into the gift shop and pay $5. From there they have walk out he backside of the gift shop and walk towards the back to get into the house. My first time there we stopped by during the winter so it was a lot more fun since we were the only ones there. In June, we stopped by and there were 2 other people in the house with us and a lot more people in the small gift shop they have. It's a fun place to go, but it's only once of those places you go once then never again. The second time I went i didn't have as much fun. The house also needs to get refurbished and cleaned up a bit. I also never did the train ride because it didn't really interest me. read more

What a cool spot! My girlfriends and I took a road trip from San Diego to Klamath and stopped by on our way back home. On our way up it was closed but caught our attention so we made sure to check it out driving back. Glad we did! For $5 you can explore the gravity house which was entertaining. We must've been in there for 30 minutes! And you can also explore what looks like a huge yard with other cool things to try. Although Northern California is beautiful, it can be a bit maddening to see nothing but trees and windy roads for about 5 hours. This spot is the perfect pit stop whether you're traveling North or South. 3 hours after leaving this place I realized I had left my wallet there. I was almost sure that thing was long gone. When I called I spoke to John and to my relief someone had turned it in! The owner was nice enough to ship it to me and I just received it today :) a huge thank you to John and the owner for their honesty and the favor!! Make sure you guys stop by Confusion Hill if you're in the area, it's well worth it! read more

Fun, quirky spot that has a train ride conducted by quite a character! The shop keeper is very personable as well. Tell you lots of fun tidbits about the shop and attraction. Gifts are moderately priced, but I think it's worth it to keep a venue like this in existence. The train conductor had a colorful personality, including a colorfully covered canvas on his person with Americana Television Show themed tattoos. He speaks like Quick Draw McGraw and has a super funny mannerism about how talks about the trail, historic equipment and life. The gravity House is really cool too! You feel totally off balance when you go in. It's similar to Santa Cruz's Mystery Spot but it has all its own charm and history that makes it very different. Cool tidbit, the Show Gravity Falls was partially modeled over this location. They have a snack shack, with nice mellow staff that takes their sweet time- teaching us all to slow the heck down. Try the Raspberry Shake, it's pretty good. read more

Such a great throwback to another era of auto travel and roadside attractions. Not many left and Confusion Hill is hanging on despite being bypassed a bit by the new Highway 101 alignment. If you're looking for shiny, glitzy, LED flashy, San Francisco style attractions this ain't the place for you. Granted the place is getting a bit rough around the edges but it is run by salt of the earth people doing what they can to keep this living museum of roadside kitsch open and available for fun. In fact maybe consider part the entry and train fees as donations to help keep it going... Stay a bit, poke around there is something hiding to amuse or entertain just about everywhere and many at no cost at all!! Don't miss Doug's Dog House for a snack or lunch... the other day when we were there it was open and the burgers were spot on! read more

Traveling America's highways once presented quirky attractions that served as rest areas for cars loaded with bored children before the days of in-car videos or the omnipresent smartphones attached to youngster's thumbs like molasses. Parents or grandparents, turn off those electronic gizmos and take the kids to a genuine slice of America's days of travel yore. Confusion Hill may not perplex or totally amaze today's 'sophisticated' youth, but its just plain good old fun visiting a place where gravity's rules appear to be stretched beyond the logic and principles of Newton. This is US101, heading into the magnificent groves of redwood giants. There's a reason you're on this road during a drive vacation with the kids in tow (or maybe just by yourself and your honey). Stop. Smile. Breathe the clean air. Become a ten year old again and just enjoy some great illusion and the magic of Americana. For the low price of admission you'll be glad you stopped and found a bit of youthful simplicity once again and pick up some of those souvenirs that you'll only find in a place like Confusion Hill. This is a fun stop in Piercy, CA, in the northern California redwood/coastal area. The gift shop is cute, and the guy running the show is super friendly. As you go up the very short paved path to the gravity shack, the closer you get, you feel the pull. It's dizzying, almost a little like vertigo. It took me a moment to get my footing. There are railings everywhere to hold on to, so even if you're the most uncoordinated, you'll be good. I highly recommend bringing younger children here. My 8 y/o was completely blown away and had a lot of fun experimenting w/ the other mystery tasks, such as standing on what appears to be a level surface, sizing up the person across from you, then switching places only to find you somehow seem shorter/taller than you were when you stood on the other side. Optical illusions abound! :) There is a check-in offer for a free kid's ticket. Otherwise, it's $5/person. TOTALLY reasonable, and worth it. I see myself stopping here several more times, as i will have a reason to head to Humboldt County on a more regular basis later this summer/fall! :) Woo hoo! read more

We did not go into the actual house, but there was plenty of cute stuff to see at the entrance. Lots of curved wood sculptures (an especially large one done with chainsaws), and the gift shop is a real trip. They have some hot food for sale too. One real complaint, they have all of this stuff advertising the famous local chipalope, but almost ZERO chipalope stuff for sale! Just a bunch of tiny, dusty, stuffed animal chipalope's stapled by their horns to cardboard. This is a missed opportunity in my humble opinion. read more

Visited Nov 2018 in a torrential downpour. Only got to check out the world famous Chickalope and the store. Would have loved to try the gravity house or the train - maybe next time. This is as Americana and hokey as it comes. If you like that kind of stuff (like me) you will have a great time here. Nothing fancy or glitzy. Makes you think of weird and odd places people stopped for on road trips last century. Took the time to speak to the people working there - and they were very nice and entertaining. My one regret being born at the time that I was, is that I missed the Americana road trip. Travelling down route 66, or other places and stopping by the oddities that you see on the road side attractions. A few years ago when my younger son and myself went to Arizona we made sure any strange thing we saw we would stop and visit. Took a picture with a huge dinosaur, stopped by the giant ball of yarn, took a picture with worlds oldest, or biggest, or ugliest well you get the picture. This past weekend we went to the Avenue of Giants and got to experience things like that. Coming up we saw the sign for Confusion Hill and ended up coming back the next day. It was 5 per person and after checking in on Yelp we saw that kids were free. I wasn't upset because 5 dollars wont kill me and if it helps keep a local place going then albeit. This place was small and we were done within 15 minutes, but the time we spent in the confusion house was worth it. The laughs that we got and pictures that we took will be remembered forever. We actually went through the house again and took more pictures doing the Michael Jackson lean! I suggest that if you go, take the time to walk around the grounds and visit the other things on the premises. I especially liked the tsunami sign! read more

Yes, it's a tad corny, yes, it's not really magic. Yes, it's an optical illusion, but gee wilikers, it works. Walked in and could barely stand up! Perfect embodiment of the dwindling roadside attraction. You won't need to dedicate a ton of time, but I found it was worth the 5$. Plus, they have snacks and bathrooms, which are scarce in this area. (visited off season, so snack bar and train were not operating ) read more

I break for kitschy roadside attractions! This one along the 101 towards Piercy is hard to miss, and not to miss! For kids and the young at heart, this is a must-stop! The employees were kind and helpful, the variety and concentration of kitsch was right up my alley. We did not see the elusive Chipalope, but many adorable chipmunks were frolicking amongst the majestic redwood trees. As for the actual "Gravity House" I have seen similar representations before, but this one was the best- and you will experience true anomalies of physics and alterations of perception. Well worth the $5 in my opinion (cheaper for kids, and check in on yelp for an added discount). Can't wait to bring our future kid(s) here someday! We did not try the food. We thought the "Twin Tower/9-11" trees dedication was a little over the top, but alright. The train ride looked like fun, but just a tad too expensive for our budget at $8 per person. We stopped off on our way back from camping at Humboldt Redwoods State Park and it kinda met our expectations, but they need to do at least two things to make it a three to five star stop. The train conductor may have been having a bad day, but he made for a truly miserable train ride. He may have THOUGHT he was funny, but he wasn't. He called his five kids "stupid" about four times, he used the word "stupid" about 100 times. Our kids (8G, 6B) were mortified. He also stretched out what should have been a 25 minute train ride to about an hour. The kids had to pee, the conductor kept calling everything "stupid," and there really wasn't any material for an hour ride- it should be a 25-minute ride. So, he needs a firm talkin' to and retraining. Then, there's the restrooms and kitchen. Although in separate buildings, they both need a facelift. We used the restrooms out of necessity, and avoided the food. I know business is tough these days, but the standards of society are high and they are nowhere close. The gift shop with all kinds of fun and kooky stuff is cool. The location and feel of the place is awesome, straight out of a post WWII glamourous and fun family vacation in the motor coach. The "Gravity Hill" thing is a perfect way to get kids to stretch their legs and cheer up on a long drive. I hope they somehow clean up a bit, this is a part of America that is so precious and fun. I will stop in again, but not for the food or train ride. read more

This is another roadside attraction, but NOT just a gift shop like many. I went here when I was 15 and it hasn't changed a bit in well....well...let's just say more than 15 years....and leave it at that! My kids LOVED the Gravity House. It was $4.00 for each kid and $5 for adults, but it was fun. They spent 20 minutes in it and had a blast hanging sideways. It is worth the stop if you need to get the kids out of the car. I was really excited to stop off at confusion hill on my 9 hour trip home from camping but when I walked in they tried to refuse my service dog access. They insisted on proof and id that she is a service dog, which is illegal. After a while of arguing they let me in but still said they didn't believe she's service. I was super disappointed because my family and I had been looking forward to visiting confusion hill for months after finding out about it BUT we didn't even make it inside the gift shop before a huge older man with a big beard was VERY VERY rude and seemed as if he didn't want us there. We had a dog with us and we wanted to ask if the attractions were open before putting the dog in the car due to no pets allowed in the gift shop ((in order to see the attractions you have to go through the gift shop)) he yelled no dogs allowed and my husband said okay I'm picking him up to take to the car and then as we are walking towards the car the grouchy old man yells "CAN'T YOU READ THE SIGN!" He was looking at me and my family very judgmental It safe to say he did not like Mexicans is the way he treated us! So we only got to visit the parking lot and left on our way back up the 101 to spend our money and time elsewhere. We were the only ones there maybe it would have been different during summer season as there may have been more people. This is our 2nd visit to confusion Hill since 2020. This visit, however, was not as positive as the first. Upon arrival we were told masks were required for all individuals in the gift shop, which is where you purchase tickets. We did not have masks with us and were told they did not have anymore disposable masks, so we were told to ask Carol (the owner) at the snack bar to purchase tickets there. Carol was immediately confrontational, and told us our only option was to purchase a $7 mask to wear in the store to buy tickets. I asked if she could provide a disposable one for me so I could give her our business, since I am vaccinated and there is no state mandate for masks indoors. She proceeded to call me an ogre, and tossed two disposable masks at me. As if she hadn't had enough, she confronted my family and I at the train depot and accused me of refusing to wear a mask and of her right to mandate masks in the gift shop. If a business is going to mandate masks even for vaccinated individuals, there should be accommodations made (such as providing disposable masks or operating a ticket window outside). We enjoyed our train ride, its too bad Carol ruined the experience for us. read more

I have been visiting Confusion Hill for about 30 years! Like it, love it, I would like some more of it! Watched it change for decades. My Great Grandparents were born in the Bay Area, so I consider myself a Indigenous Native of California. When Family, Friends, Colleagues, etc. come to visit I am compelled to show them the beautiful Northern California Coast, hug a Redwood Tree, and take them to Confusion Hill. I am a scientist, so I love to watch peoples reaction to this "magical" land. My most recent visit on Saturday, September 1, 2018 was so upsetting I had to take my guests home straight away. A four hour drive. Sadly, I am so mad at myself because they missed some wonderful attractions. The owner is a lovely person, as as well as most of the staff, however there was a big scary man at the cash register who threw me out!!? Unfortunately, I have a disorder. I have never been treated so rudely, by a complete stranger in all my life. My community and my team of Doctors donated a Service Animal to me. She is not a big dog, she is a very small dog, most people do not even realize I have her. She alerts me when I am going to have an episode. I have had her for over ten years. I have the correct documentation on my iphone Electronic Health Record as well as a Medical ID Bracelet. I almost "stroked out" from the traumatic experience. My Husband of 28 years was so angry. I pleaded for everyone to please stop. I called my Dr. on the way home. He helped calm me down and explained that Service Animals have gotten really bad press over the past years. Something good did come from this. I am doing a little presentation on the medical necessity of "legal service animals" next month. I am looking forward, kind of, to visiting Confusion Hill again. I am offering Confusion Hill a free 30 minute Educational Staff-In service. read more

I recently visited Confusion Hill along with my family. I would like to mention about the incident that happened to me during my visit to Mystery House which has left me in pain and a swollen eye. There is a metal ball at the end of the House that is hanging from the ceiling and at an angle. You can push or pulls the ball. One such act made the ball come right at me and hit me on the left temple near the eye. There was a deep wound and blood flowing out continuously. I was in deep pain and one visitor helped me come down. There was no guide or person to guide us as to what to do and what not to do. This itself is risky and frankly needs to be removed to prevent any further injuries to visitors. The center called 911 on our request and the fire brigade personnel were good enough to help and analyze the situation. On their advise, I did visit the doctor as emergency on our way back and I had to get 4 stitches. I still have a swollen upper eyelid 2 days since the incident. What was appalling was the lack of facilities at the site. I could not find water to clean my wounds and had a tough time getting help. With so many visitors arriving, there should be proper facilities to ensure visitors safety and well being. I fortunately had clean water in my car. I particularly find the following issues with this facility that needs to be fixed. 1. Risky metal ball can be injurious and fatal depending on where it hits. At that height, it is usually reaches the head of an adult. 2. No access to water or clean towels - all I got was disposable paper towels and that too from a visitor. No first aid facility, had to wait for fire brigade to get to it. 3. No personal guide in the Mystery House to guide us through the House and mention which are the risky areas. No responsible action from owners or enquiring how I am doing. This facility lacks basic amenities if you indeed require it as in my case. I wish this incident does not happen to others. We took our kids on a road trip up thru the redwood highway.. we had no agenda and just wanted to be able to stop and enjoy what we found interesting. we saw this off the side of the road and it was a great use of time. We have kids that are 16,12 and 11, they all loved it. it was priced right and it was a great throw back to road side attractions. the train was a great ride with interesting facts the hill itself gave the kids a long time to play. its a great science discussion the redwoods are nice and the gift shop is what it is. over all a great stop on the road for a few hours read more

The gravity house and "exhibits" only take about 10 minutes to walk through, so at $5 per adult, it's not cheap. That said, if you enjoy kitschy, retro ridiculousness, you will love Confusion Hill. The gift shop looks and smells like your grandmother's house, the weathered signs are hand painted in various fonts and colors, and the exhibits appear unchanged from their original 1949 state. The overall effect is of a conspiracy theory website from the 90's come to life. My friends and I laughed our heads off at the SHEER CONFUSION of it all. read more

A fun little tourist spot we hit up on our most recent camping trip in the Humboldt Redwoods. The gravity house wasn't much. The five dollar a piece admission is a bit overpriced, considering it takes like half a minute to look at the thing. The train ride however, was well worth the $8 fee. It's both educational and entertaining. My boys loved it. I've never seen an Alpine Switchback train before. They're pretty fun to ride. The conductor was a very charismatic elderly man, who actually managed to make a talk about rusty old logging equipment entertaining. My five year old kept commenting; "Mommy, he's funny!" The gift shop was also nice; a decent selection of quality and kitschy souvenirs. There's also a fun little playground out back that the kids enjoyed playing on for a bit, before we went back to the campground. Confusion Hill is one of those spots that you have to stop at, at least once. We all enjoyed our visit there this past July. read more
