CIDNY (Center for the Independence of the Disabled of New York) serves the disabled in the lower part of the borough of Manhattan; the Harlem ILC (independent living center) takes care of upper Manhattan. It's one of many ILCs around the country and one of a few in the five boroughs. People with all disabilities, including invisible disabilities, are welcome to take advantage of the services offered here, including counseling, advocacy, and assistance with employment or daily living skills. The main drawback is that the counselors are often overwhelmed by their caseloads. This is not surprising, since they're about the only game in town; it's extremely hard to navigate the system alone, and CIDNY provides a supportive environment for anyone who has questions.

They now have a fabulous Cantor, who's set up a Choir where they stood with him (AMAZING) and sang, then the Cantor invites the members to join in-like the Rabbi, totally without artifice. I've been to Bar Mitzvahs there of my nephews and nieces, I've been to sad services marking my brother's Death and Yartzeit and also for the High Holidays. I find the Sermons to be worthwhile and the sound system is first rate. There are many 'international' members-if that's the word. Anyhow, it is a comforting place and I recommend it.

On Saturdays, there are services in the main Sanctuary, Tot Shabbat in the classrooms and Junior Congregation upstairs. Rabbi Alder is really smart and his sermons are always insightful and leave you wanting more. Cantor Yager trained as an opera singer and has a beautiful voice and is lively and engaging.

It was founded in 1864 and has been in its present building since 1925-26. The temple has a new program, called terumah, in place that replaces traditional dues. In the Torah, terumah indicated a "free-will" offering, not a required one. It is based on how much your heart is moved to strengthen, celebrate and grow Jewish life there. I visited three preschools before I visited Francis Grace Day Care on 130-20 Merrick Blvd, while the other preschools were appealing to an extent I didn't feel confident enough to enroll my two year old daughter at the other preschools. When I met with Ms Shauna Francis and the teachers at Francis Grace I was impressed with their professionalism, kindness, warmth and was very happy to know they included prayer and worship daily to start the school day. My experience with Francis Grace was beyond my expectations so when I had my son six years ago that's where he went as well and still goes there to the after school program. I am happy with the service, loving environment and teachings they provided for my children, my daughter now attends High School and is excelling and my son's transition to elementary school was seamless...I would also like to mention the excellent work of some of the teachers Ms.Gail and Ms.Sophia...keep up the good work. .
