Came…read morehere with my son for his field trip and since I have been an off and on resident of this area since 2000 I thought I should check it out myself as I helped out the 4th grade teachers. Wunderlich farm is rich in history, our neighborhood being heavily influenced on German families is nice to learn where the names of our local schools come from, streets, and local shops. The friendly staff teaches visitors about how it was growing up as an early settler though out NW Houston raising animals with their daily chores and we even experienced doing manual labor work ourselves to appreciate where we are now with advances in technology. I would definitely recommend to take a walk into our local history's past and bond with your family to a place so rich in stories and tales to share even throughout these years.

It took me…read moreabout 30 minutes in the middle of day, but I had to make an appointment the day before and they asked me when I was coming for. I actually needed a quiet place to study that was away from my home because my husband works from home so I picked this place. When you get to the gate, you have to call them and then they confirm that it's you they let you in and then there's a designated parking area which has a lot of spaces. They also check your ID once you walk into the library and then give you a sticker. After that you are good to go and study wherever you want. I even walked around the grounds for a little bit on my way out. It looks very English countryside, even though I've never been to the English countryside. I think this is what it would look like. Library is beautiful and clean and temperature is perfect. Everyone working there is extremely friendly and it's such a beautiful place.

Welcome to The Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag Park…read more It is widely believed that Montgomery County is the birthplace of the Lone Star flag and this Park commemorates this very fact. On a lighter note, it commemorates my 500th review as well. It is like an extension of the Public Library and so it has plenty parking, and no gates, so open 7 days a week. There is a beautiful garden under construction. It was a really hot day so did not stroll the park or the other side where there were more flags, likely with more stories, just stuck to the main area. There are flags all around the main monument with elaborate details about the origin of the specific flag, when and where it was used, who created it etc. It made a pretty interesting read, even in the hot sun. If you are a history buff, or just want to know the roots of the Texas flag, this is the place to be. Its very neatly maintained. Like I mentioned before, when the park is fully done, it will be a much more appealing place to visit and maybe even rest under the trees while you contemplate. I did not check if it was a sunrise or sunset point, but this thought kept popping in my head, that with the sun in the background, it will make a great photo for every patriotic veteran. To me, who hardly has any connection to the war stories of this country, it was an interesting read. I can only imagine how much impact it would have on someone to whom all this really matters. Today, the 4th of July, am sure there is some independence day related event happening there.

Oakwood Cemetery is the final resting place of Sam Houston, the leader of the army that defeated Santa Anna at San Jacinto, the first President of the Republic of Texas and who later guided this new state into the Republic. Houston had a long political life, stretching from governor of Tennessee to his final days here in Huntsville, where he died in 1863 after opposing secession during the Civil War. The stone lists his many titles. The grave sits in the quiet shade of Oakwood Cemetery along with a ten foot granite monument carved by Pompeo Coppini in 1911. The epitaph attributed to Andrew Jackson reads, "The world will take care of Houston's fame." The reverse, "General Sam Houston. Born near Lexington Virginia March 2, 1793. Died in Huntsville Texas July 26, 1863. A brave soldier. A fearless statesman. A great orator. A pure patriot. A faithful friend. A loyal citizen. A devoted husband and gather. It's located at an entrance (not sure how many entrances the cemetery has). Then you can decide if you want to keep going, as there are other notable burials and historic markers in the cemetery. Once we got going the path was easy to figure out, there were markers everywhere and overall a lovely place to be. #6 can take you out to the lake so I let my pup swim for a while. Stubblefield Lake Recreation Area, Latitude : 30.5597 Longitude: -95.6377, is a tent camping…read morecampground along Stubblefield Lake and along the forest. The 98.5 mile, Lone Star Hiking Trail enters Stubblefield Lake at a trailhead just before the second bathouse and travels to the front of the recreation area to FSR 215, heads North over the West Fork of the San Jacinto River, then turns back into the forest. Water faucets are spaced about every 3-4 campsites and there is no electricity at the sites. It's a small campground suitable for tents and very small campers. Bath houses have hot showers. A quiet campground where you can camp beside the lake or nestled in the forest. Many people fish at the San Jacinto river bridge. Directions: FM 1375 west from New Waverly for 9 miles; turn right (NW) on FSR 215 for 3 miles.

A once booming economy to a town filled with crime and rememberable historical characters. Lets not forget Frank Hamer the texas ranger who is credited with killing Bonnie snd Clyde was sent to Navasota to clean it up. In fact after the ghost tour we went to a beautiful speak easy by the hotel accross from the railroad tracks and I think it was named after Frank. Truth, I don't even believe in Ghosts. But I do believe in fun informative walking tours where i get to learn history. The lady leading the tour was informed and engaging. It was a fun, informative tour and After the soesk easy we had dinner at the Red Bourd restaurant. It's about an hour drive out of Houston. We live in the heights. They have some fun shops to peruse and we love the little bookstore in Navasota. So give it a try, it was a very fun Friday off for us. Also, I think this same lady has a haunted house behind the address listed above. We haven't been to it, however. Oh , oh, oh, around holloween the local theater company does cemetery tours. You meet your group and they walk you around to the different headstones. When you get to each grave site they have actors acting telling the stories of that person's life. We've been to that for about three years now. Super fun even!!!! It's called Lanterns and Ledends and is hosted by the Navasota Theater Alliance. Very fun happening!
