An interpreter guides you through the house and grounds. There are picnic tables and a beautiful view of surrounding hills. Wildflowers flourish on-site. We love history and with small kids spent about 2 hours including a picnic lunch and walking around to take pictures. Great place to visit for a short trip. Bring a little cash so you can leave a small donation, otherwise your visit is free. Find free postcards in the carriage house. Decent restrooms. No changing table for little people. Check the calendar- the guide said that some Saturdays they do demonstrations and in non-COVID times there are even more interactive activities, like stagecoach rides to the courthouse.

I actually needed a quiet place to study that was away from my home because my husband works from home so I picked this place. When you get to the gate, you have to call them and then they confirm that it's you they let you in and then there's a designated parking area which has a lot of spaces. They also check your ID once you walk into the library and then give you a sticker. After that you are good to go and study wherever you want. I even walked around the grounds for a little bit on my way out. It looks very English countryside, even though I've never been to the English countryside. I think this is what it would look like. Library is beautiful and clean and temperature is perfect. Everyone working there is extremely friendly and it's such a beautiful place.

From the picnic tables, their history and due diligence of restoration, to the French mum's memorial for all mums, reading every word of every plaque, this town has some history, pride, love and devotion it cherished and is delighted to share in this way. The tribute plaque regarding the Vietnam Memorial replica that occurred at A&M for a week in 1999 at the George Bush Library was most heartwarming indeed. Albeit I'd like to kick the idiot who failed in proofreading the plaque. In the pic enclosed, the line which states: The gallant heroes who's names are .......ugh, it's WHOSE....how embarrassing. And this plaque has been there for over a decade!! Otherwise, this park is magnificent!!

Once you've experienced the inside you walk outside and see a map of what the area used to look like with a homestead sites and some buildings. It helps you get orientated. Then there's the whole recreation of what the town could have looked like. Multiple buildings that you can walk through, each one has their own little educational experience. The print shop is probably the coolest as it's actually functional and can print stuff on every created press. I could easily imagine spending hours here, and it's an amazing morning experience for both adult and kids.

The Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville delivers a surprisingly deep and thoughtfully arranged collection of the state's correctional history with a collection of memorabilia, videos, displays and such that is tremendous and possible overwhelming without being sensational. I thought that the actual prison cell mockup was pretty good because it shares that immediate physical sense of confinement that no documentary ever quite captures. While I never did the "scared straight" thing as a kid, this would definitely work to keep me on the legal side of the law as that spall space made the whole idea of consequences feel quite real. The museum is easy to navigate and completely handicapped accessible. The staff is welcoming and the exhibits seem to strike a balance between historical detail and human stories. I didn't buy any of the prisoner-made trinkets. That seemed too much. This was a tremendous five star stop. Pro tip: Check the Texas Department of Criminal Justice website for scheduled executions. I understand that the protesters and counter-protesters can get quite passionate and while that's a couple miles from here, it does get Livingston rather cloggedup. I never know what went into cotton ginning....heck, I didn't know what it was. the museum admission is free, but there is small fee for guided gin tours. Stormee is very knowledgeable and helpful. She showed us a short film depicting the history of the gin and the wonderful folks that ran it There is a little store where you can purchase items - we bought some homemade cinnamon honey. There is a small cotton patch and a path that leads to the gin. You can peak in the see the "Lady B" engine. If you can make it for the 3rd Saturday in April, that's when they have the annual Burton Cotton Gin festival. I bet that is awesome.

This was the first time that I have been to the memorial. It was very touching how each pillar around the circle has information about each of the 12 students that were lost on that day. I felt that I learned more about each individual and it was a touching way to honor them by capturing them as individuals. There was a marker in the center of the circle with the date and time of the bonfire collapse. Coming into the memorial there is quotes and a poem at the entrance and you reach the monument by following a long gravel pathway until you reach the circular portion of the memorial. Overall was a very touching and moving way to pay tribute to those lost in the tragedy.

This is a beautiful memorial dedicated to the 27 students who were injured and 12 students who lost…read moretheir lives on November 18, 1999. I remember this incident when it occurred all those years ago. It's a very somber experience as you walk up the path to the place where the tragedy happened. There are three parts to this memorial: Tradition Plaza, the History Walk, and the Spirit Ring. Everything about this memorial is very intentional. The number of stones used, the number and positioning of the lights, the position of the portals, etc. all have meaning. I regret not reading the pamphlet before walking through the memorial. I actually wasn't sure if we could or should walk in the middle of the Spirit Ring, but there is a granite marker in the middle that indicates the exact spot of the last Bonfire Centerpole. The intentionality and representation would have been a lot more clear if I had read it when we first arrived. Each portal represents one of the students who perished that night. The portals face the direction of the respective student's hometown. Each portal has a portrait of the student and a written reflection. The majority of the students were only 18 or 19 years old. We toured the memorial later in the afternoon so the lights were barely visible. This memorial is very pretty at night, so I would recommend timing your visit after dusk. There's a parking lot right near the memorial and it's free, however it wasn't clear if a permit was needed. We had no trouble with parking on a Saturday, but double check the signage to be safe.
