Kathy especially has been awesome with transitioning my son (who is VERY clingy) and takes the time to make sure it's the least traumatic experience for everyone. I also see her picking up the children for hugs and kisses on a regular basis which shows me that she really cares about these kids and isn't just checking in and out at a job. Each child has a folder that you check daily for their newsletters (which tell stories of the kids activities, art work, meal planning, etc) and the teachers are very willing to discuss your child if you have questions when you drop them off or pick them up. Everyone that I have encountered here has been wonderful and very sincere, which is so necessary when you're leaving the most important person to you with another person. In addition to the great staff, the kids get to have an awesome experience while they are there (and I see a lot of the kids running into school when their parents are dropping them off). They go on field trips daily to the park, zoo, beach, museum, farmer's markets, etc. They have music class, language class, open play, and educational time. The schedules are flexible and the drop off/pick up parking is a breeze. It's just been a dream for me to have something like LPP for my son and my piece of mind.

So finding Urban Child Academy was a dream come true. I spend a lot of time traveling for work and my ex also works part-time. So we knew we had to take the plunge into nannies or daycare. I swear that between the two of us we looked at 25 different places in Chicago. We found about 3 we liked at all. Most of them felt very institutional. None of them compared to Urban Child. Starting with the building itself, what the owners have done to transform this place from two old row houses into a school is nothing short of magical. The building looks like it was always meant to be a homey little preschool amidst the hustle and bustle of Streeterville. Perfect for us since they are also right next to the Red Line stop. They have outdoor space which, while small, is still just plain awesome in the middle of the city (edit: I just spent the evening out there with my little girl; small maybe but fun --- they've added a climbing wall and apparently a water wall for the spring!!). The fun part is that each classroom is like it's own little world when compared to each of the others. This year they've apparently even added a community space where parents like me can come dry off in the winter months before we hit the elements once more. I am looking forward to trying that out in February. Then there's the teachers. I am a high-energy person, but I could never do what these ladies do on a daily basis. They bring the most amazing energy and enthusiasm to work with them each day. If we all dealt with people like this each day, the world would truly be a better place. And the cool stuff they are teaching our daughter is unbelievable. Preschool has come a long way since I grew up. They make me wish I could attend preschool again.

That made it all the more meaningful to find a community that has been so warm, supportive, and genuinely invested in his growth. The engagement from everyone at Guidepost--from the teachers to the administrative staff--has meant a lot to our family. Quite a bit of volunteering as well to help keep the kids grounded and caring about the world around them. A rare combination of an independent school with a catholic underpinning where other religions are not just welcomed but celebrated. I didn't have that exposure until I was in college.
