I'm always a little intimidated walking in to a pub I don't know, that kinda looks like it would be an old mans pub, being a woman, it's just not something I do. But with my boyfriend by my side, I can do anything but walking in to Auld Hoose, I felt the most comfortable I've felt walking in to a pub in a long time. The guy behind the bar was super friendly, served us our drinks and was very chatty with the patrons. He was cracking jokes with everyone and it just had an overall feel of being part of something. This pub was definitely my favourite out of all the pubs we went in to while in Perth. It had the feel the mix of Ben Nevis in Finneston and Three Judges in Partick. All wood, loads of windows, sports on the TV and loads of old mirrored signs about the place. Definitely a must see if you're in Perth, we will for sure be back next time we're in town.

I've been drinking in here for well over ten years with a crowd of friends and it's become the traditional venue for our Christmas Eve pintage. The place was bought over several years ago by a well-known local publican who had a good reputation for fixing pubs up, getting them running well and moving on. He's never moved on from The Sheaf - which must tell you something! On draft there's always a really good selection of guest ales as well as the standards. There's been a real focus on ale in here and you're always assured something interesting to try. The staff are top-class, I'm always greeted with a warm smile. For me The Sheaf comes into it's own on a cold winter's night - it's small, cosy, there's an open fire, auld men with dogs, great malts, tasty ales and a warm welcome.

They are proud of their namesake, which centres on the story of the black greyhound of Linlithgow, whose master was imprisoned on an island in the middle of the nearby Loch and sentenced to starve to death. Everyday the greyhound swam out to her master with food and ended up saving his life. The locals call themselves 'Black Bitches' after the dogs symbolic loyalty. A great local, if quiet, tavern serving a range of real ales. It also has a nice beer garden. Apparently there is a folk music night every third Sunday of the month too.

A few years back my cronies and I would come out in Linlithgow quite a bit as we begun to look for a more serene nightlife experience. Toilets were ok, clean with plenty of soap, hot water and towels which in a guys bar is often not the case. Bar tender was friendly and helpful, I only had a fifty pound note which he has been instructed not to accept but he let me run a tab and settle at the end of the night with a card even though I had never set foot in the place and he didn't know me. After the game had finished the entertainer started, I believe his name is Campbell, he is top class. Good singer, great song selection. If I had a complaint it would be that it was a little loud for a relatively small bar, but he was good, I stayed over an hour after the game to listen to him. I will go there again next time I am in Prestwick.

An old pub, the main bar area is pretty cozy to say the least. About the size of a decent double bedroom. Despite this, I was assured by one of the welcoming regulars that they recently had 36 people in at one time. He did admit however that, "they all knew each other very well by the end of the evening". With an open fireplace in the room, I was also advised of the system adopted on a cold day where everyone periodically shuffles round clockwise to avoid some poor soul getting toasted by the flames. We enjoyed a chat with the landlord and regulars whilst sipping a few bottles of Caer Edin Dark from the aforementioned Kinneil Brew Hoose. The 5 star rating reflects the friendliness of all we met and the undoubted character of the place. I highly recommend a visit to this pub for everyone but the unfortunately claustrophobic.
