I was visiting Adelaide and the group wanted to check out this place for food and beers. It was definitely a great suggestion for a good place to hang out. First of all, parking is pretty terrible as expected in the city. At the moment there is construction nearby which also limits some options to leave the car. The place itself is nice and can sit a lot of people. The staff are very friendly, but service can be a bit slow if the place is really busy. The food was really good. I ordered the meet pie and it was very flavorful and filling. Some people also ordered the roo, and I was told it was really good. Of course the beers were good and definitely fit the mood. Overall, I recommend this place if you're just looking for something easy to eat and grab a beer with friends. read more

Came here for lunch on a weekday. Street parking was easy. It's been about 6 years since I last came. In my mind, Coopers Alehouse has always been a go to spot for schnitzel, so that's what I came for. Our table ordered a chicken parmi, a beef schnitzel and a fish & chips. Didn't realize that schnitzels don't come with salad so we also ordered side salad. The parmi was ok, wasn't as juicy as I remembered it to be. The beef schnitzel (with Diane sauce) was a bit underwhelming - there were definitely chunks of tendons or something, making it hard to cut and chew. The fish (flat head) was actually the most expensive dish - the batter was good and the fish was tender, so that was good. The chips were fresh and tasty too. Overall it was a good meal but I wish the schnitzels were better, since that was the focus of my meal. read more

I love the Coopers Alehouse. The food is great, the atmosphere is great! It is just a really nice place to have dinner. I was there last night for dinner after a show I had been doing at the Arts Theatre. And all in all it was really good, there are jus a couple of things that happened that effected the rating. Firstly, after a stinking hot afternoon and evening in the theatre, we were hoping that it was going to be nice and cool, but unfortunately (after a 43 degree day) their AC was not working :( This would have normally been OK in a pub, becasue most of them would hold their cool, however, becasue there is a wood oven in the restraunt, it was really quite warm. The second thing that effected the rating, was their over zealous nature with clearing plates. A friend of mine, went to the bar to get a drink, and while the rest of us were talking a staff member cleared her plate, which still had three pieces of pizza on it. They were, however, very good about it and gave her a free dessert to make up for it, so that was ok. :) All in all it was a good experience, and I will be returning again in future (hopefully when the AC works again) read more

Rode by this restaurant on 2 bike rides and as I do love coopers beer... thought I'd give it a go. I must say... whatever the renovation is... bravo!! The sparkler came out lovely, strong as always and cold! I'm a sucker for REAL onion rings so I started with them... not to be missed! Then I had 6 of the oysters natural. Big, meaty, and the minionette was lovely. The main was shockingly good. The chef's choice seared spiced king fish was brilliant. Medallions of seared spiced king fish loin topped with salmon roe arranged with a slaw of fennel, chicory, orange and grapefruit chunks, and more king fish chunks. All complimented by a to die for black squid ink garlic aioli!! I'm full... and the sparkler is kicking in... I will definitely be back for more if I am in Adelaide!! Thanks to all the staff too. Heaven in schnitzel form. Eating here is always a rewarding experience, especially in terms of value for money. It's got a very 'pub' atmosphere, which I like. And the serving sizes are really quite generous, but the quality of the meals is really great for a city pub. Yes, you'll probably find cheaper, but it's the combination of all the elements which makes it such a good deal. The pizzas are also pretty decent for a pub. Normally, pizzas in pubs seem to be a bit of an after-thought, always lacking any redeeming features and generally being only edible when you're completely hammered, but not hammered enough to think that finding a place for a kebab is a good idea. They do a fair rendition of my favourite, the margherita, which uses buffalo mozzarella. I've paid more for worse. There's a lot of live performances and stuff, too. I can't really comment on them as I haven't seen any of that yet. read more

This place has been around for year, as they should. The food here is always of good quality. Decent sized serves are also on the plate for a decent price. If you're really hungry, grab a 600g Schnitzel and enjoy, or a nice wood oven pizza if you are wanting to go that way. There are plenty of other choices as well. As a regular to this place over the years, I keep returning for the schnitzels. Tonight was no different. My friend and I thought we should try the 1kg schnitzel challenge. Setting us back $25.00 you can choose between diane, pepper, gravy or mushroom to assist you in your efforts. Toppings start from $5.00. In a world where size matters, you would expect quality from a pro like the Coopers Alehouse at The Earl of Aberdeen. Unfortunately that wasn't so. I was truly impressed by the size, but was most disappointed by the breadcrumb ratio to meat. The chicken was tasteless and clearly has been pounded to its maximum thinness. All I could taste was breadcrumbs which is totally yuck after three bites. My sauces accompanying me was pepper and mushroom. Both equally as bad as each other. Pepper was too creamy and mushroom was missing the mushroom flavour, so bland! It seems that if you go above 300g for a schnitty then the lack of quality and breadcrumbs increases. This really isn't one of my favourite pubs in Adelaide, especially the experience I had with my schnitzel one afternoon we came here for a work lunch (it really wasn't the best). However I decided to come and check it out again when I was back in Adelaide over Christmas, and my opinion of the place hasn't changed all that much. It is a pretty nice pub, though not one of the best that I've visited. They actually have two restaurants - a woodfired pizzeria and a standard restaurant. Nice place to get a familiar foods. The pizza was not quite what I am used to, but it's interesting. Not much sauce like Western Pizza and the dough was extremely Fresh but tasteless. Draining the crust with butter and spices might help. The server was very knowledgeable but the cook refused to alter my pizza to my liking even if I paid extra. Told me that was I wanted was "extremely expensive"... I can afford it... I didn't argue and just left it alone, but was disappointed. read more

Today we took ourselves to Coopers Alehouse at Gepps Cross. What a good choice that turned out to be. The first thing we noticed was how big the car park was! We wondered if it was a shared carpark with another business but if it was, we didn't see it. We walked in via the outside area by mistake, but I'm glad we saw it as it's really quite large, comfortable and has a lot of heating - Not to mention the huge screen TV that had the footy on! What a perfect place to sit and watch a game with your mates! Walking into the dining area, we were again impressed by the size and it was full! Mostly every table was taken and we were lucky to get a seat. We grabbed some menus and went to our table. Lots of good selections on there. I ended up going for the Braised Lamb Shanks (Yes I did note the plural!) With mashed potato, sautéed chorizo, green beans & red wine jus Hubby "steak man" chose the Graziers Black Angus Porterhouse; char-grilled to your liking accompanied by chips, sauce & mustard. All menu items have a "suggested" beer pairing but neither of us are beer drinkers so we didn't pay much attention to it. Because we were ravenously hungry we decided to split a margarita pizza as an entree. We thought it would be a 9 inch size or smaller and be enough to whet our appetite but when it came out, it was much more than that! It was huge! And it was covered in cheese. This picture doesn't do it justice. Half of this pizza each was going to be a meal in itself! The first thing I noticed were the aromas - Strong basil and tomato scents that pleased my inner Italian. The crust was not thick and not thin either. Just right! and cooked really well. I can't remember when I last had a pizza this good. With so few toppings it was really so tasty! I was just expecting to have a little something before my lunch and got so much more. I looked around to see what other people were eating and noticed the serves all seemed rather large. I wish I'd seen that before we ordered! Having said that, we weren't the only people to share a pizza as an entree. Our mains came out quite quickly. The steak looked pretty good! Hubby likes it "medium rare" and always orders his sauce on the side. I don't see the point of ruining the taste of a good steak and prefer my sauce on the side too. He feels it was more rare than medium rare but I thought it looked perfect. He said it was tender and seasoned perfectly and really enjoyed it. The mushroom sauce was nice - not too rich and a nice accompaniment for the meat. The lamb shanks looked equally good! I've wanted to order lamb shanks when I've seen them on recent menu's but something else caught my eye. Today I was persuaded because I knew I'd be getting two. They were just perfect. The meat was tender and falling off the bone. The mash was just amazing! Wonderful flavours mixed through there as I wiped it up with the jus. The chorizo also, surprisingly for me, added a bit of heat to the taste. It was a wonderful dish! Everything we had was reasonably priced making Coopers Alehouse a really good place for families to go to. The other great thing about Coopers Alehouse Gepps Cross is that they have all day dining. That's perfect for people like us who, by the time we stop to eat, have realised that it's past "kitchen open" hours. It's not the size of the giant schnitzels that keeps me coming back, it's how impressively perfectly they are cooked, and for something of this size just makes it more impressive. If you're not the schnitty fan, then the pizza is definitely the go to dish.also great for sharing, and takeawaying too! The downside to this place is the eh atmosphere, and the meh staff, they just don't want to be here, but come in a group, and you'll laugh the night away. I have mixed feelings about Coopers Alehouse. It's close by, and I've had food there four or five times and it's always been excellent. Based on other reviews, I've been lucky with the beef schnitzel. I had it once and it was amazing. Good burgers, loved the pizza, pretty normal salt and pepper squid. Clean taps and crisp Coopers. So why 3 stars? I just generally dislike the atmosphere here. I always enjoy myself but I always also kind of wish I was somewhere else. Not sure what it is... maybe it's too bright? The seating is awkward? Too many footy fans? Whatever it is, it's not nice enough to feel classy, not grungy enough to satisfy my dive bar cravings, and not hip enough for me to enjoy a cocktail. read more

Schnitzels. I'm sorry. If it weren't for their schnitzels the Coopers Alehouse wouldn't receive anywhere near the patronage that it does. It is renown for producing Adelaide's largest schnitzels, and their reputation is definitely accurate. I always order a chicken schnitzel - I swing that way - and it hangs over the edges of the plate. From what I've been told by a staff member, the chefs flatten two chicken breasts and somehow attach them. But it's brilliant. It can be a challenge to finish one, but it's a delicious challenge. The chicken schnitzels cost $18, not too bad considering their size. You then have your standard schnitzel sauces selection, but on top of that one of the best garlic prawn sauces and a mexican schnitzel, which is essentially a serve of nachos on top of a schnitzel. That last one is very hard to finish indeed. read more

Had a conference function here in June and have to say the food was spectacular! All local South Australian produce and you could tell how fresh it was. Amazing oysters, crispy fish bites, pizza and deep fried mac n cheese balls were fantastic. Great selection of local beer and wine too, lovely staff and friendly service. Highly recommend. read more

The front bar is decked out with plasma screens, so the Alehouse is a great place to come during a big sporting event. Couches are spread about to room, and brass furnishings decorate the bar, and the most interesting ceiling fan I have ever seen circulates the stale air from the punters and wet bar mats. If you want a nicer environment, there's an outside courtyard area for dining in, that generally packs out every night, so book ahead. The last few times I've been there I've witnessed staff barking at each other in front of customers and generally walk around like they haven't been laid in over 10 years, but the food is amazing, and they serve up the biggest schnitzels I have ever seen. They also have an extensive wine list, plus separate dining area that serve up delicious wood oven pizzas. It comes to no surprise, that the drink of choice here is Coopers, and the serve up the entire range on tap (but then again, so do most pubs in Adelaide). read more

I'm reviewing the Alehouse from a function perspective, which is little different to the bistro and epic schnitzel experience you will find downstairs. I hadn't been to a function before, but after being told it would be held on the balcony upstairs, I was definitely exciting. However, I found it to be a little disappointing and a bit of let down for the people who fashion the most amazing schnitzels out of thin air. First of all, I didn't realise the balcony is actually separated into TWO function rooms, one is decent sized and has a good slice of the balcony, the other is very small but has a slightly larger section of the balcony. We were in the second of the rooms and it was a squish for around 100 people. The inside area got very crowded very quickly and there is only just enough room in the corner for a small bar and then a tiny stage area for making speeches, or if you wanted to have a band there. I have since been into the other room which is much more spacious but doesn't have the view out to Pulteney St. Still I think I would go with this one because it is so much bigger and has a larger bar. Cooper's Ale House is renowned for it's humungous snitzel's and wood fired pizzas. Eating here needs to be planned right. I would recommend booking a table ahead as it can be packed out. When you arrive, hope that you aren't placed on a table near the wood fire oven because you will melt. And when you order, be aware of your eyes being bigger than your belly! For the first few times I ate here, I obviously ordered the snitzel, which entirely covers a large plate and the chips are entirely hidden underneath. After wasting majority of my meal the first time, I learnt from my mistake and shared a snitzel with a friend from then on. This is great by the way, half the price and you can get a salad on the side and really enjoy your meal without the guilt of wasting food and overfilling yourself. Now, one day I made the bad decision of changing my order for a salt and pepper squid dish. Instant regret. Unlike normal pub meals, this salt and pepper squid was Thai themed and not very filling. Although the squid itself wasn't too bad, the salad and disgusting dipping sauce was scrutinized by all of us. Thus, I recommend sticking with what you know here! The 'pub-liest' of all the pubs in the CBD. A bar with a pool table at the front, beer barrels fashioned into tables splayed out. None can beat this pub experience. Built in 1850 under the name The Devon Arms it sprung into success following the upsurge of business around Hurtle Square. Not only does this fine establishment have a long history within the early days of Adelaide, but it has a scrumptious and gluttonous Schnitzel menu. Labeled as their 'Famous' and 'Gigantic', it's enough to feed the masses and can come in a variety of toppings. I went for the 'mexicana' as my amigos did. Not surprisingly it was a dollop of nachos with all the fixtures, atop a twenty inch wide chicken breaded slab. I could not tame (and later contain) this beast of a meal. I caught a glimpse of a lone elderly woman who had also received the Schnitzel around the same. She was slowly chipping away, one equally portioned and petite bite at a time As opposed to my hunger overwhelming my body, needing to insert this meal into my stomach in an expedient fashion. She beat me. I took my defeat bitterly, but this isn't the last you'll see of me Schnitzel lady. read more

If you want to be bait and switched this is the place to go. Offers abound for a $10.00 Schnitzel. Little do they tell you it's only available in a certain section of the establishment. We sit down at an available table, order 2 of the special schnitzels and at no time are we given a heads up it's not available in the section we are sitting. There is absolutely no signage, no courtesy of informing us that it is not offered in this part of the establishment. We eat our meal and get ready to pay and are given a bill for an additional $18.00, because we sat in the restaurant. Now mind you, where we sat was not a nicer part of the pub, it was fairly drab and a bit dirty. I couldn't tell that there was any difference from one room to the other. Just got back from a great pub-style dinner at the Coopers Alehouse. Was somewhat overwhelmed by the size of the schnitzels that I saw on dinner plates as I walked in. I soon got over that and looked over a diverse menu and specials board. As a visitor to Australia who has yet to eat Kangaroo on this visit, I decided to forego doctor's orders and go with the Alehouse Grill. It is their signature dish of kangaroo fillet, quail, sausage, chicken wing, Angus fillet, ham steak and two fried eggs with sticky port wine jus served on the side. On the side was a cup of chips and a salad. The platter of food was immense, but so delicious. Everything was cooked to perfection and seasoned beautifully. Was one of the most memorable meals I have had in a pub (Australia and UK). The specials looked just as appetizing, perhaps I'll return for dinner another evening during my visit.
