Clockwise from left: Corelli's menu, meatloaf (back), lamb bangers and mash (front), raspberry cheesecake, and the infamous seafood chowder!

By far the best meal we had while in New Zealand was at Corelli's in the Devonport, a suburb of Auckland. We came here on the recommendation of the barefoot, hippie bookstore proprietor down the street. Their standout was the rich and creamy Seafood Chowder, which admittedly, was a meal in itself. The chowder was loaded with goodies like shrimp, scallops, squid, clams, and mussels. The New Zealand Cabernet was a great addition to my lamb bangers and mash with onion gravy, as well. We also indulged in their raspberry cheesecake served with a side of cream for dessert. The ambiance is akin to a cafe or bookstore. We visited New Zealand in the wintertime, so it was especially nice to cozy into a bookstore/cafe-esque restaurant! The prices were very reasonable for the portions. My boyfriend ordered the special - beef meatloaf with a mushroom reduction and mashed potatoes and a salad for only $11! The portions were big and filling. Service was friendly and attentive, and my only regret is that we didn't have time to come back!

Our bus tour of Auckland stopped in Devonport where we had time on our own to have lunch. We walked up and down a couple of streets and took a look at the menu here. My husband liked the vibe so we got seated. He enjoyed his flat white coffee and I enjoyed watching the sparrows come and go through the open door. The restaurant was very popular when we were there, every table was taken. They also have a take-away counter with pastries and quiche. My hummus was ok but the pita was too dry and brittle to easily scoop up the hummus. Hubby had a salad with chicken. He enjoyed it.

First of all, their chicken salad is AMAZING!!! I'm not a big fan of vegetables and I would normally never order salad at a restaurant. Because...why pay $15-20 for a bowl of veggies when I can get a pizza or pasta! But for some odd reason I decided to order chicken salad and it was THE best decision! It was probably the best salad I've ever had! It was a warm salad and seasoned very well with dressing and roasted nuts. And it's got a very generous amount of bacon! I had it with every bite and I still had some left at the end! The reason why I'm only giving 3 stars is the wait time.. I had to wait for an hour for this salad... it seemed busy but i didn't know it was that busy. Perhaps they were under staffed in the kitchen? The server who took the order could've told us about it.. We asked a server to check on our order after 40 mins of waiting. She left and didn't come back. Another server brought our order after 20 mins and no apology for the wait.. I was very happy with the salad but not sure if I will come back considering the wait time and unfriendliness of the staff.

Corelli's has a great location on the corner of Rattray St and Devonport's. The look is eclectic, with assorted quirky ceramics, pictures around the walls and knick knacks making this place look half like a café and half like a second hand shop. The food was a good size and presented nicely. I ordered the Halloumi and roast kumara with Asian slaw and it was fresh and tasty. Other dishes around the table were Chicken and leek pie, Open Steak sandwich and Quiche and they all looked lovely. Good home cooking like your Nan used to make. The service was tentative and friendly. The selection of cabinet cakes and slices looked like a generous and appealing accompaniment to a cuppa on another visit. Nice and handy to the Victoria Theatre next door.

Saturday afternoon on a windy day. We enter Corelli's trying to get a bit out of the wind. Corelli's is a mix of grandma's house, mediterranean village cafe and a student's apartment living room... (If you enter, you'll know what I mean). The cakes are served generously and they look and taste like home made. I ordered a Chai Latte and got a thee pot filled with enough quantity for 3 servings in my cup. Taste? Gooooood.... I am (yes, again) peeking around: A humongous hamburguer on one side, chiken with rice on the other side. Nice milkshakes in every flavour... They have it all!!! So, for everyone, there is something in here. Expect to like it :)

This cafe was amazing! I had a flat white coffee with a slice of carrot cake. The coffee was delicious and the carrot cake was the absolute best! Serving portion was extremely generous! The service was great! All of the desserts at Corelli's are baked onsite! I highly recommend this cafe in Devonport. Loved the eclectic, Bohemian ambiance!

This place is just a lovely and relaxing place to come to, nothing stuffy about Corelli's. Its a kids friendly cafe with a little area for the kids which is a life saver for any parents. They have lovely homemade style food which is just so good, tasty and filling. They have a good selection of cakes and the yummiest gluten free chocolate brownies, so good you will be back for more. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the food is a bit of a mixture of New Zealand style and European. I have been back here a number of times and will keep coming back when I'm in Devonport.

Eclectic cafe with scrumptious food, good coffee and a relaxed vibe. Stopped in for lunch while in vacation. The cakes looked awesome.

Stopped in for a late breakfast one morning and all I can say is: asolutely incredible food. We spent three weeks in New Zealand, ate here on day 1 and honestly was one of our favorite meals the entire trip. Eggs on toast, mushrooms on toast, pancakes with fresh compote - so good. Great coffee too. Don't mind the slanted tables outside - the food is the focus!

First of all, the ambiance is spectacular, with gorgeous views of the harbor. My first night, dozens of sailboats were out, singly and in groups. The staff was welcoming - a sense of formality, but not pretentiously so. The first night, I had the Signature West Coast Whitebait Fritter, Kūmara Fries, and Mango and Mānuka Honey Cheesecake. The second night, I had the Signature Mediterranean Crab Cakes and the Herb Crusted Mt Cook Alpine Salmon. All were wonderful. The small plates were the Whitebait Fritter and the Crab Cakes. New Zealand Whitebait is a real delicacy, and they were perfectly cooked in what would better be described as a thin omelette rather than a fritter, topped with a deliciously rich buerre blanc and fried capers. Stunning! The Crab Cakes were served with a crayfish lemon mayonnaise and balsamic vinegar. Quite tasty with a nice crunch - use the lemon, it really helps bring out the flavor. Of the two, I would recommend the Whitebait Fritter hands down. It's something I will remember. I got the Kūmara Fries (New Zealand's sweet potato) as a side, and they are delicious. Coated with some parmesan cheese and served with black garlic mayo! So good. And it's a large serving - from looking around, all of their sides are designed for more than one person. That said, I did a pretty good job with the fries by myself. The Herb Crusted Mt Cook Alpine Salmon is another New Zealand-centric dish. The dish is exquisite and overwhelming. The salmon itself was perfection - perfectly cooked and rich in flavor. Then add the delicious pickled fennel, the red capsicum marmalade, the horseradish cream, herb oil, and the saltiness of fish roe? Explosions in your mouth. The Mango and Manuka Honey Cheesecake was rich and delicious with a nice crust. They also had a nice selection of New Zealand beers, wines, and liquors.

If it was the only place we had eaten, during our visit, we would have thought that dining in New Zealand was awful. The room is very nice, with wonderful views of the Bay and cruise ship port, although a little less formal than I would expect for the price range. The problem began with the staff who, while trying very hard and being very polite, did not seem to understand a word we said. They were very good with the phrase "Thank you, sir," though, and I realize language barriers must be accommodated while traveling. This IS an English speaking country, though. Anyway, everything seemed to go wrong. Ordering wine was an ordeal, and it arrived halfway through our meal. The food presentation was mediocre, and everything needed some spice or seasoning. It felt like a meal served at a retirement village where everyone has diet restrictions. The kicker, though, was the steak. We ordered medium rare. It arrived burned to a crisp. For the first time in years, we actually sent something back. The next attempt came back nearly raw. It was inedible and almost felt like chef was being a jerk. We just left it pretty much untouched and later, noticed the staff huddled in the corner pointing over at our table. To the restaurant's credit, our steaks were removed from the bill, without our even asking, but that is a bit beyond the point. There are many fine dining options within walking distance of Fish. We wish we had known.

I arrived to a very unique restaurant location, right alongside a helicopter landing pad, where they search and rescue along the coast, as well as a very busy Auckland port, with containers being transported in and out. I liked the go and energy of the outside, and knew that what I was arriving at was going to dramatically contrast that. The interior was a complete contrast to the exterior as I had thought, and a immaculate staircase to a door that opened into a reception area that overlooked a very large dining space. Large ceilings and beautiful glass lighting pieces, highlighted an elegant room, with the kitchen up a bit higher overlooking the dining room. The floor to ceiling glass windows allowed for dreamlike gazing at the waterfront and also the busy port. So the highlight of my six course meal was that every piece that we were served also was accompanied by its very own wine, picked to compliment the food, and even when we got to the dessert, this was paired with a dark beer. I loved the french onion soup served in a miniature soup ramekin with lid, and served with the sweetest pieces of croutons I have ever laid eyes upon, the flavour was so memorable. I also really enjoyed the Yorkshire beef pie, also a petite form, but so perfect in every way. Honestly, I could rave about each and every one of the pieces we devoured in this visit. Simply put, the chefs know there food, they enjoy cooking a classy and traditionally inspired dish, and with the great attentive staff to add, its a win!
