That said, that's just the way it goes when reviewing! The hotel, itself, is located in a great, convenient area. It's walkable to Piccadilly Gardens and various shopping like Boots and the ever loved by every American I ever knew, ( not me!), Primark. Great pubs and eateries abound and the arena isn't far, either. Upon arriving you will tote your own luggage up about 6 stairs, as there was no ramp or bell man. The lobby level is modern in a disco sort of way, as is the bar and restaurant below. Andre is great though and me and my colleagues loved him during a recent visit where he explained some of the 'futbol' rules to us during the Fifa World Cup England/Colombia game. Happy Hour is a good one. The gym is modern and nice. My room, hmm.. not so modern. I had a hard time finding plugs! I was unplugging appliances and plugging my two items in! I even moved the tea pot to heat water to the floor since it was there in the most random place and a UK plug. The shower took me forever to figure out how to turn on from running water ( no plug for bathing) to shower. One more note, my sink clogged from just washing my hands and it took forever to drain! No plugs in the bathroom and two small towels for bathing. I did like the staff but just wasn't that impressed with much of anything else. Maybe again, it's unfair because I miss the other hotel which catered to my company a little more. And now you know ! Cheerio!

The events space we were going to was in a separate building to the huge brick warehouse that dominates this part of town - I couldn't believe it when I was told it had been converted into a hotel, given how tiny the windows were - it resembles a Victorian prison in some ways. Anyway, the venue had security on the doors checking bags etc. which is fairly standard given the number of people who had bought tickets. Inside, we were straight into the huge bar area, with the boxing ring and rows of seating in another massive adjoining space. This also had a mezzanine level so spectators could get a slightly better view. Predictably, the prices for drinks were erring on the ridiculous side - £4.50 for a 330ml can of Heineken, £4 for Foster's (I'd forgotten how truly grim and tasteless the latter was) and bottles of 'wine' for £18. I'd suggest that you either rely on drinks at home or in the nearby The Bishop Blaize pub to save a few quid. Great atmosphere for the boxing, a bit in-between Metrolink stops for public transport so there's a bit of a walk, but otherwise a pretty good venue for events.

For the Whisky Sessions there were some good food stalls out in the courtyard and three main stage areas, one of which was massive and all of which are elevated. There was also loads of bar space selling a wide range of cocktails as well as beer and wine and, as it was the Whisky Sessions, a fair few wee drams. Parking up and staying on the outskirts of Manchester, a city very well served by public transport, is the answer. We took a taxi here from Manchester Picadilly and it took around 10 minutes. We got a 2 twin room and it was spacious, the washroom was big. They provided real hand soap which is a nice touch along with shampoo and body soap. The air conditioning was working well and was super cold when we first stepped in. Service was great, no complaints. There is free parking for the drivers as well. Salford Quays is a really lovely area as well.

However, when my mother stripped the bed on day of checkout (to help house keeping) we discovered the duvet was covered in blood, urine and god knows what other bodily fluids, my mum felt ill thinking about the fact she had lying in that for 2 nights. We reported it to the staff immediately and they were horrified, apologetic and told us we should get a full refund. They gave us the customer service number to call... Cue "goodwill gesture" of a £35 refund verbally by telephone after being kept on the phone for an hour (total cost £114.40, so still a profit of £79.40 for the pleasure of sleeping in other people's bodily fluids), obviously requested a reference number/email/contact to take it further and was told I would get the same response. No information emailed so I completed a complaint form and the automated feedback email you get. Cue another "sorry you are disappointed email and goodwill gesture" email upgraded to £52 refund (which doesn't even cover the cost of one night's stay) and still Premier Inn making a profit of £62.40. The stay did not meet the basic standards of cleanliness or clearly the "good night's sleep" they harp on about, apparently these standards are acceptable and that because we didn't discover it until check out, that makes it okay. See pictures for yourself (I have videos too that I couldn't upload but tried to take screenshots of - honestly it doesn't fully show just how absolutely disgusting the duvet was - it should be binned or set on fire!).

Shortly after I arrived, my coworker told me that the place used to be a mental institution/hospital. I'm not sure how you'd react to that, but I kind of loved it and spent my free working minutes on the web, trying to learn about potentially haunted rooms and ghosts of ol' crazy people. Unfortunately, no paranormal activities at this facility. So instead, I spent my evening in the gym facility, took a spin course, and sweat my butt off. The next day I tried the swimming pool and sauna as well. I was also really pleasantly surprised that the locker rooms were equipped with fantastic hair dryers ... AND ... GHD hair straighteners. Those babies cost a couple hundred euros a piece! The lunch menu on the first day included meat and chilli beans, as well as salmon.. and then of course, some salad and lots of desert. I tried the salmon with chili beans and overdosed on proteins. So so so good. The salmon was really fresh. I ended up ordering salmon for dinner as well. The quality of the food there was really fantastic. So the reason I am giving it 4 stars, instead of 5 is because it was just cold and chilly in there. The front door was kept frequently open and I think the windows aren't properly isolated, so when the temperature drops outside, you feel it right away inside. Other than that - definitely recommended. About 35 minutes from the Manchester Airpoint (36 Pound trip by cab). Give it a try!

It's only 30 mins drive from Manchester airport but ring the hotel direct and they will give you the number for a local hackney firm they use. £40 vrs £70. More beer money for me! P.S. Hackney firm are excellent and picked us up in a brand new Toyota Avensis estate. I digress. Arrived at the hotel which is situated on its own 20 acres grounds and it is a Grade II listed building. Very nice setting. It was a Monday afternoon and the reception staff were all older ladies. Unusual but you knew they knew their stuff. Being Irish we asked when did the bar close? (We have been stung before with venues like this and the bar closing early) and to our great surprise she tells us and I quote "The bar closes when you stop drinking". Hallelujah, did she realise the trouble that was going to be in store.... Now now, we did behave ourselves I promise. P.S. This used to be a mental asylum you know! Decor very tasteful and well appointed. A small bit of a labyrinth but you get to were you are going to in nice surroundings. Room has all the 4 star mod cons, room key is a funny plastic card with holes in that you leave in the lock to open. Requested an Iron and board and had them within 5 mins. Bar nice and spacious. Best thing ever was the free american pool table but had UK sized balls, better than that was the garden sized connect 4 set!! Hours of fun for all the guys at the conference. We had teams from the UK, Ireland and Holland. A great night. Bar food really nice and prices not bad either. I'd recommend the burger with bacon and cheese served with great fries and coleslaw all on a wooden chopping board (they must have broken all the plates, ha ha ). Bar staff during the next day were hard to find and slow but that's because I'm used to Irish bar/pubs speeds. If your slow in Ireland you go out of business fast! Great conference facilities and little touches like bowls of sweets (Drumsticks, Fruit Salad and Love Hearts) during the intervals make all the difference. Breakfast & Lunch in the main restaurant was really good with a large choice. All buffet style but it just meant you got more of what you liked. Nice touch is the area between the bar and main restaurant with a free coffee/tea station and bowls of more sweets, apples, bags of crisps etc. These guys know how to look after a business conference. Will be pushing for more training and conferences here.
