I had a deeply disturbing experience with this church, and I feel a responsibility to share it so others can make an informed decision. During my time there, I trusted members with personal information. Over time, I came to believe that this information was discussed behind my back in ways that felt disrespectful and damaging. Instead of direct communication, there seemed to be judgment and private conversations about me, including my financial situation, which felt intrusive and shaming rather than supportive. What concerned me most, however, were statements and situations that felt threatening and deeply unsettling. There were comments about taking control over people's lives and even statements that came across as threats involving my family. At one point, I experienced a situation where a vehicle came near my home and I genuinely feared for my grandfather's safety based on what had been said to me. Whether others interpret that differently or not, it created a real sense of fear and crossed a line that no church should ever approach. This environment felt driven by fear, control, and intimidation rather than care, humility, and truth. I'm sharing this not out of spite, but out of concern for others. A healthy church should build people up, respect boundaries, and communicate directly--not operate in ways that make people feel unsafe or targeted. Cornerstone has a talented creative and communications team that makes the Word easily accessible. The services are upbeat and inspiring. This is a great church if you have a family, make it your only social circle and are completely aligned with their beliefs - which are quite conservative for SF. However, as others mentioned, it is very cliquey and not progressive around the queer community, race and gender. It is their right to define their community pillars as they wish though it is a missed opportunity to not fully love and embrace others as Jesus did through his radical love. It is also challenging to get involved if you are single and newer, as most people have attended for decades and know each other. Even after a few years, you may still be kept at a distance. I do dislike leaving a poor recommendation on a place of faith. But I have some experiences to share about Cornerstone from behind the scenes that were really regrettable. On the good side, the Pastor's Sunday message is invigorating and inspiring for anyone imho. But in my opinion, you are screened early on as a "True Christian" or not when trying to see if the community is a fit or not. On 3 separate occasions I mentioned I was brought up Catholic while trying to meet and talk to people. One reply was a very pejorative "Oh, I'm sorry...!". The other reactions were similar. I found this quite self-righteous. I attended Bible Study for almost two months. During one episode, a member of the church who I actually liked quite a lot said something to the effect of, "I can never really trust someone who isn't a "Believer". My reply was something to the effect of, "How do you know they are not a Believer? What if they ARE at heart a Believer, but they just haven't been woken up to the fact yet, that possibly anyone can be a True Believer that simply hasn't awoken to that fact yet?". I mentioned that someone professing they are a Believer doesn't guarantee they are trustworthy, and the most unethical and truly selfish, despicable businessperson I was ever partnered with was a Believer. During this time I kept asking similar rhetorical questions amongst the topics discussed. I got some bewildering looks and at times the group was silent and without response. One topic was along the lines of "True Believers" vs. "Soft Believers", which I found to be a horribly offensive name for a topic. The assistant Pastor changed the name to something more appropriate after I shared my objection. Anyways, in my experience, I heard the word "Believer" being used regularly, often in making comparisons amongst people. It was discouraging, and I felt clearly tagged as a "Non-Believer" based on my interactions there. And I felt especially offended that people within Cornerstone likely would tag my devout Catholic parents as not "True Christians". All that negativity said, if you are a "Believer", Cornerstone is alive and vibrant with great energy and lots of social contact. Overall I consider it a very friendly community, we were just not mutually good fits for each other. read more

This Church is nothing how I grew up going to church. where you have to dress up in a dress no I don't like that. you could come in shorts and flip flops and a t-shirt. that's what I've seen people wear. this is not a typical church with preaching. the pastor tells a story that you can relate to. I love the music it's so awesome. it's been a few years and I decided to come back I'm glad that I did. People r so nice they welcome u, even if ur new to the church or coming bk to the church.... I just went to my first Christmas special it was so awesome I love the story had some funny parts and a meaning to life.... Cornerstone is a one of a kind church. The messages always seem to hold a very relevant lesson regardless of who is speaking. The seating can be a little cramped, it's in an older building, but it's still comfy. A big highlight of this church is it's performances (Spring musical, Christmas Eve candlelight, the comedy improv night etc.). Worth a sunday visit and staying around after and before service. The java is killer. Bagels, toast, donuts, and really delicious coffee. And if you're not into that type of food then there's plenty of local restaurants as well. This is a great spot to go to for very lively worship on sunday mornings. Saturday nights are excellent too! Just check it out, the pastoral staff is very wholesome and welcoming. read more

We found this church because of its affiliation to our home church, Willow Creek. We don't live in the area, but if we did, this could be a church we would become part of. The worship was upbeat and energized, the childcare was personal and organized, and the pastor was passionate and accessible in his message. We really appreciated the diversity among the congregation, the adjacent coffee/meetup room, and the parking for first-time visitors and families. We were greeted by several people during our time there and everyone seemed friendly and welcoming. We're only in town for another week, but we're likely coming back. read more

I was a member of this church for over 3 1/2 years, I was part of their choir for a year and half. A week ago, Pastor San over text messages said to me that I could not longer be a part of the choir because of my sexual orientation. He went even further and said that because I am gay I am not a strong spiritual leader and because of it not fit to serve or worship God. This is not only discrimination against me because of my sexual orientation (which by the way, Pastor Sam was fully aware of my sexual orientation long before I joined the worship team and long before I got baptized a year ago), this also goes against the love that Christ has for me, it goes against everything Christianity stands for. So if you are a member of the LGBT community STAY AWAY from this church, STAY AWAY specially from people like Pastor Sam who go around trying to pray your gay away. I am a happy, healthy gay man and God loves me and accept as I am. I pray that this pastor and any other pastor that think like he does finds Christ, that they truly come to God and start looking at people the way God does, without prejudice and discrimination. The house of God should be a place of love, acceptance, respect and welcoming to all, not a place in which we choose who to reject and who to accept depending on whether they live their life according to how you want them to or not. It has been a while since I've come in contact with blatant homophobia aimed directly at me and my family and I haven't missed it one bit. A cornerstone groupie just sent me a fun hate filled message, which I suppose I could just thank him for as it was a good excuse to talk with my kids about bigotry tonight. Also, I will say, after about a decade of attending a super loving, kind, welcoming and Jesus filled church, I can't believe I ever thought cornerstone had any real depth underneath it's glossy shiny surface. My family and I are so grateful to have found Cornerstone and have been attending since 2011. As a girl from the burbs, I have to be honest that I didn't expect this place to become my home church simply because it didn't look like the churches I grew up in. It was the series leading up to Easter, and I remember my husband and I being captivated not only by the music (amazing!) but the message. So much so that my agnostic husband talked to me about the message afterwards. That's when I knew we were home. Hubby accepted Christ a few months later, and we've connected with wonderful people since who have helped in our journey. Yes, there are perks: parking garage for the elderly and young families, a cafe with delicious toast, a fantastic children's ministry (huge thumbs up for keeping our kids safe with the check in/check out process), and an app with daily devotionals. They're also very involved in the community, both locally and abroad. From serving the homeless, collecting backpacks for students, to putting together Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes, they help build the church in every corner of the earth. But the major highlight for me is how Pastor Terry breaks out Scripture. Not only does he make it easy to understand, but he is incredibly gifted in helping you see so much more of the points God is trying to get across so you can apply it now. As I write this, we're currently in a pandemic, and we're missing being in our favorite building. But Cornerstone's helped us to stay moving as a church by live-streaming our Sunday services, providing materials for kids church, and a full calendar of events to keep us centered in what truly matters most. I've particularly enjoyed the mid-week worship on Instagram and the Friday community prayers, and I'm so appreciative for the continued guidance to keep praising and praying! read more

The church is set in a beautiful location- a former arthouse movie theater. They have a very cool balcony and their services are so popular that they have to roll away one of the walls during the services to open up another room for seating. Pastor Terry's services are always very relevant for today's young Christian. The church is best for yuppies in their 30's-40's. Get there early to find off-street parking and for good seats. The only complaint I have is the people- such snobs. Don't expect to feel like a part of the family of God if you don't fit into "The Clique," which is made up of the musicians in the band. They do a great of job performing, but they are very pretentious and pretty catty to each other. They don't feel the need to make you feel welcome. If you're looking for a wonderful church to attend that has sermons that count, yet don't want to plant roots, then this is probably the church for you. read more

If you're in search of a nonjudgemental place that will give you spiritual food for the soul, then look no further. After moving out here, I was in search of a spiritual home and stumbled upon Cornerstone. Although I liked the message I received at that first service, I figured that it would only be fair to check out some other places of worship first before committing. I went around the Bay Area checking out services, and each time, my heart kept bringing me back to this place. So I decided to go with my heart and stay here. I really love the message I receive weekly, and everyone is so nice. This place really is run like a well-oiled machine, from the services to the small groups, to even the little cafe where you can grab a bite a little snack or coffee before or after a service (cash only, please). This place offers a little bit for every type of person. There's a Moms,Inc. group, hiking group for the outdoorsy type, monthly lunch meet-ups after church for the 20s and the 30s community (in addition to other small groups and events for this community), groups for men, childcare, and volunteer opportunities both in the church and the community. Not to mention, Pastor Terry and Pastor Luis deliver some amazing words. Regardless of your religious or non-religious affiliation, everyone is sure to get a great take-home messages that speaks to the soul. I agree with what most people will say about the message, music and art - high quality, of depth, and enjoyable! But what I would like to highlight is the quality of the community. I have been part of the Cornerstone community for over a decade when I first moved to America. They have truly become my family, and have impacted my life in ways too numerous to list in one "review." Most notably, the Cornerstone community was instrumental in helping me survive the death of my wife after our son was born. They rallied behind me, supported me tangibly, and still to this day provide me with help, support, and hope. I could not have made it through that time without them. I still need them, and am incredibly grateful for the quality of people that have come into my life through those doors. It can be hard to find a place to fit in no matter where you go, and it takes time to connect deeply with anyone in any place, but I found my people, my family, at Cornerstone (I met my wife here!), and, if you allow it time, I hope you will too! We found Cornerstone on the internet when we moved to SF from Chicago over a decade ago. What a caring community! The encouragement, compassion, and kindness of the people there has made this city home for us. The friends we made there got us through some very rough chapters in our life. Our children grew up in their terrific youth programs and have made lifelong friends there as have my wife and I. The band is absolutely incredible, making Sundays a time of joy. The messages are powerfully inspiring and healing, bringing the words of Jesus to life. This is not the church I grew up in by a long shot. It's less "religion" and more soul-stirring. Cornerstone SF is a very warm and welcoming church in the heart of San Francisco. My wife and I have been attending service here for more than five years, feeling at home from the beginning. The people are very friendly, understanding and open. The band is a world class operation of highly talented individuals. It is possible to simply attend to try it out, get involved in discussions and small groups and really deepen your faith at your own pace. There are many resources for the members. The church has an online option so you can check it out first, but in person is a very moving experience. The church gained in membership and expanded to a campus off Ocean Ave at the Riordan High School Campus. Parking is better at Riordan, but the Mission Campus has parking under the church for first-timers and on Guerrero on Sundays. read more

True Religion. Seven, Diesel, Levi's, Lucky 13, D&G, Stussy, Old Navy. There's space for all type of jeans at this hip church located two blocks from Dolores Park in the Mission District. Cornerstone pleasantly surprised me in that it wasn't anything like the stuffy church I remember when I was a kid. Instead of hearing obscure echoes bouncing off cathedral walls, Pastor Terry's sermons at Cornerstone aided by a fantastic contemporary worship band, lights, media, video and drama presents "church" in a vibrant manner. The worship band is real good and it's okay to clap along. However sometimes I'm next to someone that doesn't got any rhythm. I annoyingly think "why is this guy next to me clapping off beat?" Then I realize--whoops--"I'm that guy" that's clapping off beat! They stage a few dramas around Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother's Day and Easter. Their drama often adds some creative liberty to re-imagine familiar biblical stories in a compelling way. The last play I saw there, their stage crew surprisingly put a beat-up Volkswagen on the small stage for their road trip Christmas play. Even though the building is small and intimate, attendance is bustling with 4 services scattered over the weekend. Cornerstone is a friendly place for those with a budding curiousity in Christianity, as well as a good place for people to sink roots. I've made some awesome friends there to grow in faith with. So recently we went on a Saturday night since we couldn't make our Sunday service and checked it out again. Bumping up one star for the people that sat around us who seemed genuinely friendly and warm. Would have bumped up to 3 stars if not for the personal messages I got from members of the church who didn't like my last review. I get it you love your church and your defending it but my issues aren't out of the norm. People that love this church love it and people that don't usually say very similar things to what I said. I still have issue with the lack of a message but I do see the value. For busy people it's a quick in and out. Short teaching on the bible. Lots of music for those who tire easily of the traditional stoic type of services. You can tell people spend a lot of time on the production. Huge wall size poster of their series on Moses. Lights. They even sell coffee and pastries right before the service. Personally I feel like it's a bit too much song. Started to feel like a concert. I almost chuckled when people clapped after each song. I thought the idea was to sing together no? Maybe I'm wrong about that. Peopel were trying to sing along but the band is a bit over powering. The lead pastor, Terry Brisbane, delivers Biblically based sermons, which are always accompanied by life applications. The setting is very intimate and you'll always receive a warm greeting as you enter. It's a very multi-cultural church with a with a wide variety of ages among the attendees. My husband and I searched around for an extremely long time before we found this church.... and after we went to the first service, we just couldn't get it out of our heads!! We tried a few other churches that were closer to our home, but we absolutely couldn't go to another church after we found Cornerstone! The atmosphere is so accepting to everyone and I didn't feel the pressure to constantly donate time and money before I was ready (as I have at other churches). I feel like they are just as happy to have you come and share a service with them as they are to have you join one of their study groups or be in the band. This is the best service I have ever had, very relaxed environment very welcoming staff from the parking attendants to the greeters when you walk in. I went to Cornerstone for over 2 years. I did the connection class, joined a small group, and volunteered every other week. That's a pretty big commitment for me. My experience at this church was very positive, but the church is not perfect. My opinion is that this is a great church for people who like contemporary worship music and want a welcoming, low-pressure, inspiring sermon. Reasons I kept going: location (17th & Valencia!) worship team (one of the best contemporary bands I've seen) people I met there Pastor Terry's messages (historical & literary references included in addition to the touchy feely stuff) Suggestions for those who want to give this church a fair shot: try to go to the same service every week attend connection class (this is how I got plugged into the small groups - the website is not always up to date) Reasons why I might look for a new church: Pastor Terry preaches messages in series of 4- 12 weeks. The messages will revolve around a certain theme, like "The Prodigal Son." Some members love all the messages and series. I really loved a couple series (The Seasons of LIfe and Parables), sort of liked most of the others. After 2 years, I've heard the same themes again and again, and they are less relevant now than when I first joined. I wish they did more community service. They have a couple weeklong missions trips every year, but that's a big commitment. They volunteer with other organizations once every 1-2 months, but they don't have any of their own outreach programs. So I braved the search finally and went to Cornerstone. I found it friendly and welcoming.... not the fake welcoming, but genuine. Points of applause: 1. So much to say about this place of worship! Great spirit led food for the soul - top notch sermons and a band that would sound better than most played on the radio. When I first started attending, many years ago, I thought, as many others have thought too (from what I've been told), that it was difficult to meet people. Then I got smart and decided to get involved in some of the activities: bible study, volunteering, and just hanging out around the coffee shop/bookstore. Wow, every person I met was really really nice - exceptionally nice, very approachable and sincere. Not one bad apple. My wife and newborn also attend these days and love it. The childcare is TOP NOTCH, and if we miss a sermon there is without a doubt a dedicated night in our home to watch it online. I've invited many people to this church over the years, and still do because it's a great church, and most of the time I've heard from the guests "I felt like God was really speaking to me.." Let's face it, I'm a Southern Boy living in the West Coast. When I first moved here, one of my priorities was to find a church that I can connect with. The one church that felt most like home to me was Cornerstone Church. I mean it's no Buckhead Church in Atlanta but it's nice that its a smaller more community focused church. I always enjoy the music and the band and performers do a really good job showcasing their talent. I also enjoy that the church really reaches out to its members and highlights them in short film segments...it was pretty meaningful and very cool to actually see these people sitting right next to you. I've been going to Cornerstone for a year now and all in all it is a very positive experience. The band is incredible, Pastor Terry and the other speakers he bring sin always have very relevant sermons, and the experience is overall very positive. I will say that I agree with what many have said that it can be difficult to feel the warmth of this church without making a personal effort to get plugged in. The first few months I attended I just went to service and I did not feel as if I met many people who I saw on a regular basis. However, once I got involved with a small group and also started serving in the church I have felt much more like part of the community. It is definitely something where what you put in is what you get out. I would encourage any women also to attend the Coffee Talk series that are every other month on a Saturday (can find them on the Cornerstone calendar online). A few weeks after I began attending the church I went to a Coffee Talk and it was a great opportunity to be with other Christian women worshipping and hearing a message for us as women in the church. I also would really encourage young people to sign up for the Twenty Somethings dinner dialogues, as it is a good way to get hooked in even if you can't commit to a small group kind of setting. read more

TIMES Woohoo, they have a variety times for service. A nice later 12pm service too. SPEAKER: Very animated and illustrative. That particular Sunday the message was very Gospel based, and Bible based. So as to gage where the Church stands on those important "cornerstones" of their faith. MUSIC: Really great sound, the little theatre-like room must provide great acoustics, plus they seem to really know their technology! Contemporary sound, with the drummer, bass, guitar, and vocalists. Good songs with God-focused lyrics. Songs that are easily sung along with. :) But gotta come early to get the main seating, otherwise, going to get seated on the side room. SEATING: Nice and plush fold down theatre seats :D VISUAL: Dannnng For such a tiny venue, they are super on top their technology! Three big cameras, one camera moving around on its own, live projection for the room adjacent, and on the few LCD screens for the back row. O_O PEOPLE: Very diverse in ethnicity and age. I've recently started a search for a new church and went to the Saturday night service based upon a friend's suggestion. I think the best way to gauge a visit to a new church is to figure out what your frame of reference is. For me I've been a long time follower and was searching for a new place to worship. Given that assumption, the last thing I wanted was an overtly friendly congregation and worship. So the "hands off approach" of the Saturday night service was good for me. Think of it as the difference between customer service styles. Some shoppers prefer an immediate "hands on" approach, others prefer a "hands-off, wait until I ask for service" approach. The type of shopper you are would determine how the cliques appear to you. So back to the worship, I found the lesson to be insightful and presented in a way that piqued my interest. It was on an oft-covered topic of the Prodigal Son, but for the first time in many years I learned a new application of the story. Some may find the band a bit over the top, but that is pretty much how most contemporary worships are now led. FYI if a contemporary worship style is a deal breaker for your worship experience, then you might want to try other more traditional churches. Show up early if you want to find parking and to get a feel of how the congregation socializes. I can only give it three stars so far because I'm not sure if I plan to join this church. read more

First time visitor today with my fiancé. We are looking for a new church and we left an absolutely amazing one back in Indianapolis so our expectations are high. We were shopping for the right church and we found it today. 1. Parking was easy, free, and the gentlemen who led us into the garage was very friendly and welcoming. 2. We were immediately greeted once inside, given a warm welcome, and some first time visitor information. 3. The worship band is amazing; very talented bunch. Coming from a large, non-denominational church in Indy with a very good band this was important for my fiancé and I. 4. The pastor was very good as well; good message, and a nice balance of scripture and real life stories. I am looking forward to getting more involved in the church and am very thankful we found a new church home. read more

I started going to Cornerstone 5 months ago and I really liked it. Pastor Terry's teaching connects with our daily life and always hits the spot. He is one of God's wonderful gift. I keep going every week because I want to listen to him, not just because I have to go. I can understand how it feels like to be unwelcome, especially on first impression. But it doesn't mean the whole church members are like that. Some are incredibly nice, try to join the ministry or classes to get to know more people. It's really hard to know people by just attending the weekly service. The band is really awesome, you will love it. They have 4 services every week, so imagine how tired they are, we are all human, can't keep a friendly face all the time. Give it a try. Pastor Terry's teaching is simple and quite entertaining. The message is often divided into series for several weeks and you will definitely learn from it. I have wonderful experience there, just want to share. Focus on Him, for He never frustrates you. read more
