Hello to staff at Armagh bus station. Today, 28th June 2022…read moreI was using the town service 12.30 from Woodford, and back on the 2.14 pm from the bus centre. I am not long after hip replacement and am using 2 crutches. This was my first trip out, and my return journey was by myself. I was nervous about tripping, falling, etc, none of those things happened. I want to praise, and thank all the staff on duty today for their kindness and help. The driver was very kind to pick up my travel card, get my ticket and bring it to me in my seat. The lady in the office inside was similar, friendly and with a smile. Well done and thank you. At least Armagh has a bus station, for many years it didn't, so the very fact one exists is good…read more Unfortunately it's quite small and there's no cafe, only coffee and snack vending machines (chocolate bars, packets of crisps and bags of sweets). A well cared for Ulsterbus station, if slightly shabby these days. Staff are agreeable, when they're there that is, as the ticket counter's closed up most of the time. Hence you often just purchase your ticket on the bus from the driver. However when you do talk to both counter staff and bus drivers they are friendly and helpful. Today I went to buy an Armagh to Belfast ticket which costs £9.40, but the ticket counter Gent advised me I could purchase a 'Rambler' ticket for £9.00 which allows unlimited Ulsterbus and Belfast Metro journeys for one full day up to midnight (price as at Nov. 2015). There are a couple of things which irk me about this station. Lack of an electronic timetable display board is one, though paper timetables sit at the ticket counter. Secondly the opening times are rubbish. Buses come and go at all hours over 7 days a week but the bus centre's only open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm. This is annoying if you arrive or wish to depart outside station opening hours as you end up standing at an outside bus stop in all weathers.

A life in the day…read more It's an edge of town train station with tall chimney remnants of Ulster's flax mill past still visible on the Portadown skyline - flax (or linseed) is the naturally growing fibre that makes everything from bedsheets to table linen and underclothes. Linseed gives oil and other healthy derivatives. Most recently, Portadown was the site of the long-running Drumcree dispute, but that dispute is a damp squid now but it was different in the 1980's and 1990's over yearly marches by the Orange Order through the Catholic part of the town, which often sparked violence and protests. In the 1990s, the long running dispute escalated and prompted a massive security operation, drawing worldwide attention to Portadown for all the wrong reasons. Historically Portadown can trace its origins to the early 17th century Plantation of Ulster, and in the Victorian era, with the arrival of the railway I'm travelling on today, it became a major town. It had the nickname "hub of the North" due to it being a major railway junction; where the Great Northern Railway's line diverged for Belfast, Dublin, Armagh and Derry. In the 19th and 20th centuries Portadown was also a major centre for the production of textiles, mainly linen. Linen wasn't just an industry it was a way of life all over the Northern Ireland statelet that gave us model villages like Bessbrook which couldn't have a pub built in the village and while Quaker's like the Cadbury family were becoming multi millionaires from chocolate the Quaker linen barons were becoming the super rich of the day in Ulster. Meanwhile Harland & Woolf were becoming super rich from heavy engineering in Belfast. Cadbury like other Quaker chocolate magnates (Rowntree and Fry) saw drinking chocolate as a drink for men who abstained from alcohol (women weren't mentioned back then) with a now deceased quasi religious cult leader here naming booze the Devil's buttermilk. Personally I've never met the devil. Quakers here built houses for their workers with electricity and a water supply way back when it was unheard of - all taken for granted now for many years. They gave workers a sense of pride in work - and work is still intrinsic to human nature in the west - again the Germans had a sign above the entrance of Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps: Arbeit macht frei; the German phrase means "Work sets you free" or "Work makes one free". Those who entered these places certainly met the Devil. Such was the power of the Quakers throughout the UK they dictated when the families that worked for them went to bed and woke - they controlled the electricity supply in their model villages. It's as well these good folks were decent and honest in themselves - again honesty and decency were taken for granted back then too - moral fibre. If you look into 10 Downing St today or 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue DC in 2020 you couldn't find it with a sieve. So I sit musing on a train with a cafe Krem flat white on the outskirts of Portadown. We all sit apart and away. We are on hopefully the tail end of Wu flu but it's as unclear and fragile as most things now, just like democracy.

The manager (Greg) worked very hard to see that the Bride and Groom had the best day. I saw him doing everything from putting out extra tables himself to serving the buffet! I even saw him sweeping up a broken glass. This is country hotel with modern facilities run with old fashioned hospitality. If I was spending time in this part of the country I would stay at the Valley Hotel.

Loved this place…read more Super great value for money, this place was a treat. Like something from one of those family-bonding American roadtrip movies. An excellent warm welcome by lovely locals was the first impression quickly followed by comfortable beds, clean showers.. everything from a good B and B, but in a big old building that looked like a converted barn. Lots of quirky wee touches, including a TV room with an extensive library. We had a dorm booked with room for 6, including a big table to play cards and have a drink. There was also a porch for the smokers amongst us. Just when things couldn't get weirder.. a bat entered the equation. Followed by another bat. Screams. Laughs. It was memorable. Would definitely go back (if they have us back!). Only 15 euros a night each. Top fun, or should that be craic?

The Glenavon across the road from the Greenvale is a better hotel although you will pay alot more for the experience. In summary if you want cheap and cheerful go to the Greenvale, it's not bad, it's not a five star international hotel but it's OK. Almost forgot the food in the Greenvale is of a good standard, and it's cheap.
