When it came to recording my band's EP, we just knew we had to get away somewhere special and Skye…read moreticked all the boxes. So we booked our stay at No. 6 Drynoch Cottage on www.islands-and-highlands.co.uk and waited in anticipation! The cost of our stay was pretty reasonable, coming in at just about £500 for four of us for a week. You pay a deposit and then pay the rest by a certain date. We payed online but you can also do so over the phone. - The islands and highlands staff were really friendly and helpful when we phoned to make the initial booking so it's worth giving them a call if you have any concerns or problems as the website is a little simplistic and out-dated. The cottage itself is homely and cosey, with a living room with a fire (now, we're talking!) and other little quirks, like the whisky bottle lamp and a set of decorative birds mid-flight. These smaller things all made the cottage feel like home for the week and it was lovely to sit before the fire after a hard day's work. It's spacious and cosey, with a living room, kitchen, two single rooms and one double. There's a large television and dvd player. (There was a small selection of dvds, so it's worth bringing some of your own.) There's cows in the surrounding fields and even a friendly neighbour kitten and you're surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains! So in terms of location, you've got it good! Unfortunately, there's no wi-fi but, (don't worry, Yelpers!) we all seemed to have good signal on our phones so it wasn't a problem. And when you're somewhere like Skye, internet isn't really a priority because there's so much to do. (We often went through to Portee which is a twenty minute drive away and also took a visit to the Fairy Glen which is beautiful!) When we arrived at the flat there were a few rotten food items in the fridge but it might be the case that the staff who'd cleaned the fridge hadn't read the use-by dates and thought to leave them for the next guests. It was only a pizza and what looked like a pepper. - No biggie! They also leave the key somewhere very obvious for you when you arrive which was a little strange initially but it's so remote that there's no real reason for concern. (Seriously, there are more cows than people!) We took a lot of unnecessary extra baggage like toilet paper, etc but the cottage has everything you'll need for your stay so don't make the same mistake we did! The kitchen has lots of cooking utensils so you're sorted if you plan on cooking in most nights like we did. All in all, No. 6 Drynoch felt completely like home for the week and we really didn't want to leave! It's definitely somewhere we'd stay again and I'd thoroughly recommend it as accommodation in Skye. I miss looking out the window to see cows and, of course, those amazing mountains!

The Wigwam is well thought out and very comfortable. It has everything you need for a stay (we stayed 5 nights) over Christmas, it was lovely and warm once inside, very very clean and great facilities (Mini Kitchen, Fridge, Kettle, TV, Warm Shower, Wifi). It is so great to make a coffee and sit out the front of the Wigwam and look out over the loch - would love to come back in the summer and use the picnic area and fire pits! Great communication from the very friendly owners and nothing was too much trouble. Dornie is a great place to visit on its own with beautiful views and a lovely little pub but it is also a great place to position yourself for visiting the surrounding areas and Skye for day trips. We will 100% be back!

The location was on loch long (a lake) in a good position to see Eilean Donan castle, Kyle of lochlash, and tour the isle of Skye. The town is small but we had dinner out both nights and we were pleased with the food. I will definitely stay at another wigwam in the future. I wish they had wifi.

Roskhill Guest House - Room with a view

Roskhill couldn't be more adorable if it was Gir in his dog costume. I made that Invader Zim joke…read morefor the sake of my girlfriend. The next one's just for me: Roskhill is one of those rare landscapes that Rockwell painted. It's quaint. Quaint, look up synonyms and see what you get. Old-fashioned. Charming. Picturesque. Artful. Antique. Old world. They all apply. Weird? Curious? Off the beaten track? Yup, those to. Roskhill claims to be in Dunvegan though it's actually outside of it, on its own road which you'd miss if you didn't have SatNav. It entertains five rooms, all different configurations, and all past a set of staircases which felt like I was being passed through a sieve. There should be a sign outside of every B&B in Scotland: No Fatties. Each one I've been in has been a task to climb. The staircase leading up at Mayfield Lodge was barely three feet across. I think Roskhill beats that with a mere two and a half feet with a short roof. I hit my head twice. How did they even get furniture up here? Did they crane it through the roof? And although I appreciate a bathroom larger than phone booth, must the toilet feel like it's been chilled to 20 degrees Kelvin? The only other big gripe is its WiFi. I know I should be grateful for having WiFi at all but the range at Roskhill is limited to the living area downstairs, right next to the dining area. It doesn't reach our rooms. And that's where the criticisms stops...because Roskhill is actually one of the best B&B's I've ever stayed at. All white, inside and out, it fits within the rustic (there I go with that word again) theme dominant across all of Skye. Parking is decent, probably aided by the fact we were the only ones staying at Roskhill this week. The singular owner greeted us and offered us the check sheet of what we did and didn't want during breakfast. That in itself is worth the price of a room. I can see the B&B being rather tight fully booked, but just the two of us, we felt right at home. I suppose you can call that a bias. The meal was amazing, with a generous spread of options both traditional Scottish and traditionally English. We went full Scottish of course. The rooms were very generous with a comfortable bed, a good sized TV we never used, and a table offering tea, coffee, and biscuits. With reasonable pricing, I can believe Roskhill would be rocking in the peak months. That being said, traveling in October or even November would be a bad idea. For one, the crowds have passed, and two, everything is cheaper. It's almost a shame that Roskhill is nestled so far out of the way, with most people I am imagining staying in Portree. Although that's the eventual plan for future trips, I could totally see us staying at Roskhill in the future again. Food: 3/5 Service: 4/5 Presentation: 4/5 Value: 4/5 Recommendation: 3.75/5
