I've only been here for drinks so watch this space for another food based review, I hear the sushi platter is delish. My favourite cocktail has to be the awkwardly named Sake-Wray night fever, pictured. A plum sake and Wray and Nephews rum based beauty, Japan meets Jamaica :) It comes with a sprinkling of glitter. They used to pop a small disco ball in the glass but apparently the punters have nicked them all so no more disco balls *sniff* The place was packed but we found a little spot at the end of the bar by the serving section, we were asked to shuffle along a little as the staff needed to get in and out from behind the bar but the waitress let us stay put which was nice of her. The barmaid was full of charismas and sass, we loved chatting to her about this and that. Great staff and great vibe.

When I arrived at Cottonopolis I started to familiarise myself with the 'Ice, Fire, Steam and Oil' sections of their Japanese inspired menu. All reasonably sized dishes, they're priced anywhere between £5 and £9.50 and only 2 or 3 are needed per person for an ample sized meal. The Loch Duart Salmon Maki and Beef Tataki from the 'Ice' section are both great dishes. The fire section served up some Pork Belly Yakatori - a fatty, delicious cut of meat that fell to pieces at the slightest touch. The Blackened Mackerel was cured with treacle and blowtorched to create a crispy surface whilst leaving the tasty flesh succulent underneath. The final plates sent our way to be devoured were lightly battered wild mushroom tempura and outstanding Kara-age chicken wings with kimchi coleslaw. The miso marinated tender cutlets of the Lamb Nasu ensured that I left with a smile on my face. What Japanese meal would be complete without a small 'ochoko' of sparkling Sake. Keeping to tradition, the Sake was served in a Masu and was sweet and fruity. I sipped with instant regret that I did not order the full bottle.

The inspiration for the place is seemingly the item they bring your bill in ;)

Using one of Manchester's nicknames for an Asian-influenced eatery and bar may have raised a few eyebrows at first, but I have to say the beer, service and overall experience here was really good. It's a former textile warehouse, from back when the city was pretty much in control of the cotton industry, so the name's appropriate. The designers have also been very sympathetic to the original features - the cast iron columns are pride of place, as are the wooden floors. From memory there may have been some old sewing machines on the walls. Their large bar has a wide range of beers, but their tank beer is delicious so we stuck to that (apparently it's the same as is delivered to Albert's Schloss on a weekly basis from the Czech Republic). The staff here (all who seemed to be tattooed to the max) were friendly and efficient, in fact, the service was probably the best I've had in the NQ for a long while. They're a credit to the place. Fancying a light-ish bite, the four of us ordered a range of dishes to share between us. Everything was good, but it was the pork belly skewers that stood out by far. Juicy and flavoursome - we should have ordered a portion each! Prices are a tad on the dearer side here, so be aware though. It's a lively, striking and exciting spot in a rapidly growing section for the city. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Although I've been aware of Cottonopolis for some time, I have to be honest in saying I never thought it would be quite 'my' kind of place - aka, I'm not cool enough for it. However, after meeting someone for a drink here and also a proper meal, it may have just changed my mind. A group of us visited pre-Christmas for a bit of indulgence and to catch up before everyone went their separate ways for the holidays. We were seated at a slightly awkward table (think there should be a prize if you manage not to hit your head on the lamps, even if they do look beautiful!) but soon managed to squeeze everyone in and just about hear one another. Really, there's no need for the music to be that loud. Numerous dishes were ordered across the table, meaning we could all dig in but also ensure our favourites were present. The pork yakiton - grilled pork belly - was obviously present, alongside dishes such as the chicken yakitori, vegetable tempura, katsu chicken, and beef tataki. Some of us even managed to save space for dessert after this array of plates, and the pineapple upside down cake certainly provided the sweet hit I was looking for after the array of savoury we'd just demolished. Everything was presented beautifully and even the plates themselves are worth noticing; the fit out and design of the space has been done very well. There were a few hiccups with the service and requiring extra cutlery but on the whole they were really friendly and understanding of the rather large order we put through. Always extra points for noticing an empty bottle of wine and offering another also. It's also worth noting that they're dog friendly so, fellow pooch spotters, you'll probably be in luck.

After a couple of days of pure indulgence, I'm glad to have topped it off at Cottonopolis. Located on Newton St in the Northern Quarter, I walked past it twice and had to open my maps to make sure I was in the right place. We had a table of four booked at 7.30 and having got there around 7ish they were more than happy to bump our reservation up. That being said, I could have easily spent 30 minutes at the bar taking in the surroundings sipping on my gin. The dining area is quite small in comparison to the bar. When I got there they were setting up a dj section so I'd imagine as the night goes on the dining area gets smaller as the bar grows. The menu is split up into four sections; Ice, Fire, Steam and Oil. It's basically Japanese/Asian inspired tapas much like Australasia. I helped myself to yellow fin tuna nigiri (ice), pork belly buns (steam) and some crispy chicken wings (oil). The food doesn't come in any order and can come all at once. This wasn't a problem for me as it varied up each bite. I thought that the bar was really well set out, staff were great and the food was amazing. As for price, I'm not totally convinced it's great value for money (£9 old fashioned cocktail) however as an alternative to Australasia, I'd recommend going.

    Review Highlights - Cottonopolis

On both my visits I had the tank beer, which is Krusovice and is very delicious - equally as good as the tank Pilsner Urquell at Albert's Schloss.

Recently opened, the new restaurant is one of the few on First Street so it is quite easy to find. Obviously we took advantage of the January offer and judging by how busy it was on a Tuesday night, so did a lot of other people! Walking it the vibes were really good with great lounge music playing and people chatting away. The menu and drinks offerings seemed to be the same and prices very reasonable. We all knew what we wanted to have anyway- our favourite burger or pizzas! We started with a sharing platter which would probably suit 2 people more than 4, but everything on the board was cooked perfectly. We especially liked the spicy mayonaise as it had a good kick to it. I really liked the burger- big thick and juicy with accompaniments to match and we ordered 1more mac and cheese to share halfway through our meal cos we couldn't get enough of it! The staff were really friendly and bubbly which made the night an even better experience. We sat on the outside tables, so you might want to watch out for the heaters, as they are really hot! I must say, I was very impressed with this restaurant, and dare I say it, as good as the original!

We got three drinks one of which was a shared which was served in a massive popcorn container! It was delicious and worth the money. If coming here definitely try one of the cocktails they are gimmicky and very fun to drink! A great place for a catch up session with the girls and for prepping a night out on the town. I will be back!

Magical? Chemical?…read more The alchemist is not only a nice surrounding to sit in but the service and food are great and delicious. When we checked in and were asked if there were any allergies we made jokes about my husband's allergy to cinnamon - that we would not need to worry about out it before desert. We ordered a few items from the menu - which is a very delicious mix of classics with some twists (tempura fried fish and chips for example). Order was taken and a couple minutes later the manager came and said "I am sorry - but the sauce to the fish contains a bit of cinnamon" wow! We change the order of course and the manager came back to the table asking if we would be worried about cross termination. We have been not and everything went well after that. Great service. The food itself plays with the alchemist theme for example the chorizo meatballs come with a syringe to inject your own amount of cheese (what you think? Yes of course o injected the whole Syringe into the little delicious meatball duhh). The menu consist of a lot of small items which makes me so happy since I can have so many bites of different things and at the alchemist they are all worth it! And of course classics like burger, salads and sandwiches alongside their mains. The menu is not too big but literally has something for everyone. You have to try the crispy pork skins! After we had been told that the crispy fish contains cinnamon my husband learned they offer their "chicken in a basket" as a vegetarian version as well and that is what he got. Damn that is so good: A bed of chips (fries for our American friends) are surrounded by one of the best coleslaw I had in a long time (almost as good as Guy Fieri's if not even better) then slightly pan seared onions and peppers layer on top of the fries. Ready to be mixed in. Then of course a generous amount of chicken or in this case plant based chicken smothered in a sweet chili sauce. Not to forgot to mention that it came with an extra little bowl of dipping sauce. Delicious! We also had a mocktail which name I might not be allowed to recite here let's named it "virgin adult film star" what a perfect combination of fruit, creme and sweetness. Yummmmmm To end the night I had coffee and Choclate - any serving of coffee comes with a set of three pralines. What a way to end the night at the alchemist. Great atmosphere perfect service and delicious food and drinks.

I was lucky enough to have Neil C. take me to Manchester House last Friday as a treat for starting my new job. I have visited the bar on 12th floor numerous times and have always been impressed, but this was the first time for dinner. Upon arrival, the hostess on the ground floor congratulated me on my new job! Excellent customer service and such an amazing, personal feel. She knew this from when the table was booked, but she didn't have to say anything. She did and it was amazing. Heading out of the lift into the restaurant we were greeted by a few more lovely hostesses. They welcomed us, took our coats and we were shown to our table. Walking through the restaurant, it has been very cleverly designed so that you walk past the kitchen first, giving you chance to see some of the dishes being prepared and sent out to their tables. I was SO excited. We ordered 2 full tasting menus. I ordered the drinks flight in addition and Neil C. went for the wine flight. The tables were neatly laid out and the seating was comfy - good job too, as we were sat there almost 3 hours. Our waiter arrived, carrying 2 glasses of Champagne. 'A gift from us. To congratulate you on your new job!' he said. :D *Laura beams* These guys are good. Throughout the evening our waiter was charming, knowledgeable, friendly and explained each dish in such minute detail that I can barely remember what I ate. All I have to say is that every one of the twelve courses I consumed was exquisite. Overall, it's obviously very expensive, but more than worth it. I'm already pushing for my next promotion so that Neil C. can take me back!!! ;)

Anyway, the Lounge is beautiful and a great place if you want to impress someone - it's on the 12th floor with excellent views over the city and there's a cosy outdoor area as well. The cocktail range is extensive and, unsurprisingly, a little pricier than elsewhere in town. One French 75 had a pretty major impact on my sobriety, however, so I'd say it's value for money as well as delicious. I'm also a fan of their cut glass crystal. The staff are very nice although can be a little slow to take your order/clear tables. Also beware the lift! It has a mind of its own. Update: the vesper here is excellent.
