Great food but very slow service…read more We were on the last day of a very boozy weekend in the lakes and needed a good breakfast to help us along. We hid from the rain this little cafe and ordered some excellent fry ups. Two of us had the standard English breakfast while Dan went for the large version which contained a serious amount of meat. I really enjoyed mine. The line up was scrambled egg (you get to choose you egg type), sausage, bacon, black pud, beans, tomato, mushrooms, hash brown and toast. My toast could have been more toasted (it was still pretty much bread) but everyone else's looked good so I think it was a blip. I had a latte too which was good. It's waitress service to order but they were not in any rush to come over so if you are hungry I'd suggest heading up to the counter.

My mother-in-law and sister-in-law had been here before, so they knew it was great and brought us back, along with my husband's grandparents. Do take note, you have to book your table in advance. We sat in one of the backrooms which was very cozy and inviting, albeit a bit noisy from a rowdy group of "ladies who lunch," but it was fine once they left. We all really appreciated that savory items were included in the the afternoon tea. The menu features a selection of sandwiches, savouries, a cup of soup, a bucket of chips, a selection of cakes and a mini trifle. Plus your choice of a pot of tea or cup of filter coffee. I was happily surprised at the wide variety of teas! There was ample to eat. My husband and I ate our entire afternoon tea, but everyone else in our group had a few sweet treats left to take home. The food was very delicious. I loved the little quiche best along with the soup served in a cute tea cup and saucer! Plus, the little basket of chips was a nice touch! Scrumptious! Also, it's just 14 pounds for Afternoon Tea which I think it a great value for such a delicious savory tea. Although only going on one visit, the culinary firepower here seems to be beyond outstanding! I note that the pâtisserie list on The Wolfhouse website just goes on and on and on, with 20-30 items on the list advertised as being available each day. This quote from their 'Savouries' webpage sums up the cheerfully inventive spirit, "When we run out of one thing, we find something else to cook. Simple! It's just so much more fun that way!" With so much inventive spirit, plus everything so well-sourced and made from scratch, I think we can safely say that this 30-seater café is a better option for the serious foodie than a lot of fine dining places. My friend was right, the walk to Farfield from the nearby town of Sedbergh is delightful. The old converted textile mill is set near the majestic Cumbrian fells, perched next to a picturesque river and now showcases the wares of local artists and craftsmen/women. Their creations are for sale and you can see and buy everything from beautiful glass-blown perfume bottles and watercolour paintings to wooly blankets and books about fashion design. It's really quite something, though not exactly cheap. The top floor of the mill is an exhibition area. This week, live weaving demonstrations could be seen for a small fee, but I'm not too fussed with weaving so gave it a miss. On the bottom floor, you can read about the mill's history and see how it would have looked long ago, walk around the art gallery and then head to the cosy cafe. It boasts a small outdoor seating area overlooking the river - perfect for dog walkers or those who want to soak up those rare northern rays (I'm told they do make an appearance every now and then). I ordered a piece of homemade toffee sponge cake, which was absolutely lush, soooooo moist and moreish. Hats off to whoever baked that, it was the perfect way to refuel for the walk home (around 2 miles). This is a gorgeous spot for lunch, a coffee or a simple nosey at some incredibly inspiring. And if you're into photography, take your camera along - you're bound to get some good snaps on the way there.

I must have stayed for 2 and a half hours. Everyone was very friendly and the history of the mill was fascinating as well. Well worth the modest entrance fee, and the tea room also a delight. Bread, Meat, Fish, Mexican food. My favourite stall is Posh Pickles who do jams from fruit from this country, mango chutney and all sorts of pickles. This month I bought Lemon Grass and Ginger Jelly. their Caribbean Marmalade is to die for. The man with the Mexican food stall, does gorgeous Cornbread. He saves a loaf for me each month, because my friend is alergic to wheat. The latest improvement is cornbread with sultanas in it. The bread stall has types of bread which I had never heard of. my favourite is her Walnut loaf, 2nd her Date bread. The meat is sourced from north Cumbria. Occasionally one of the local breweries bring a range of their bottled beers. Even if you don't buy much the market is fun to visit. I'll update this if the stalls change.
