The Red Lion is situated just off Sedbergh's main shopping street and overlooks the town's beautiful Parish church, which dates back to Norman times. Out the back, there is a small but pleasant walled beer garden, though I'm not sure it gets much sun, due to its location (and the fact that this is the north of England). The bar offers much of the usual really, nothing special (you won't any craft beers or memorable wines here), and prices are about average. If I'm in Sedbergh on a Sunday, I always go to The Red Lion and tuck into a large beef or turkey roast with all the trimmings, followed by THE best homemade sticky toffee pudding. I usually need a kip afterwards, so if you're thinking of doing a walk up the fells, do it before you eat here, not after (unless someone is willing to roll you up them). It's a good, honest, pub which attracts many of the area's farmers seeking nothing but a no-frills pint and a chat with other locals. Anyone looking for a little more ambience should head over to The Dalesman.

The pub has a bar area and a restaurant area - we only ever went into the bar as you could eat int here and it was really cosy (dogs are also allowed!). The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty (lets face it, Yorkshire, particularly North Yorkshire folk are possibly the most friendly on the planet - i challenge you to disprove this!). The food was INCREDIBLE. Nothing fancy pants, just really good food, VERY big portions (trust me on this, you dont need three courses - choose your weapon of starter or dessert to go alongside your main - we made the mistake one night and 1) couldnt eat it all and 2)pretty much rolled home). We spent an evening in the pub, had a meal and then sat playing card games - we felt incredibly welcome. So welcome that we ended up visiting three times in a week long holiday. You cant really get a better recommendation than that can you??

There are standard pub dishes like fish and chips plus more modern gastropub food. Some people may find the way the food is presented to be peculiar. For example, the chicken liver pate was served on a bed of decorative pebbles. I think it works for a place like this. The quality of the food here is excellent. Everything always tastes freshly made to order and served piping hot. Service is prompt and polite. I think the only gripes I found are the parking lot is too tiny and there isn't a proper cocktail menu. With a bar stocked the way theirs is, it deserves a nice cocktail menu. This pub has become a staple for my trips to the Dales. I highly recommend it for those travelling through the area.

The bar is reached on two sides of the dinning room with bar stools in both rooms and a lot of small tables. Great, traditional, British, old style pub and restuarant. One young waiter seemed new and eager to help while the other young waiter seemed to be the "boss" and was a bit colder and commanding the other two. No worries as that is not why we were there. I ordered a chicken pie and my wife ordered a salad and local salami platter. They were all great. Because the three waiters were more or less kids, none of them had tried any beer and could not give me any advice. I had two of the local beers which were good. A few more people came in to had drinks and dinner as well. It seems like a nice place to stay over as well, but that will have to wait until another day.

I like to go there in the evening for a meal as it has a warm and relaxing atmosphere, and the food is great and reasonably priced. For evening meals you are shown through to the dining area - one large room with nooks and corners leading off. I actually prefer to be in the comfy window seat separate from the main dining space - it's more intimate and private. The food is fairly traditional - a lot of meat and fish dishes, but nicely cooked and with good flavours. The puddings are worth leaving a 'corner' for and the service has always been lovely - you never feel rushed or overlooked. A pleasant, mellow evening out.
