As typical of FM radio stations in the mid-20th century, the FM station usually was a hi-fi simulcast of its AM parent. During the 1960s, it simulcasted its AM parent KXYZ which played beautiful music. In the late 1960's, the format changed to Love Radio formulated by then-owner ABC Radio with the calls changing to KAUM around 1970. From 1980 through late 1986, the 96.5 FM slot for the Houston-Galveston market operated as KSRR 97 Rock FM, featuring morning radio host Moby. The station competed against the album rock format of 101.1 KLOL (and from 1986, KZFX Z-107.5 FM). From October 15, 1986, the station changed call letters to KKHT, and the hard rock-oriented format was replaced by a contemporary hit radio format known as Hit 96.5. By mid-1987, heavy competition from top 40 powerhouses KKBQ and KRBE prompted the station to morph to Adult Contemporary. The station rebranded as 96.5 KKHT From 1989, the station changed call letters to KNRJ, modifying its format to feature a heavier variety of "high-energy" dance music. This format, branded Energy 96.5, was a competitive response to two other local stations, 93Q KKBQ and Power 104 KRBE, whose Top 40 formats reflected the increasing presence of dance club-oriented tracks (catering to a then-lucrative target audience drawn to the flourishing night club scenes along Richmond Ave., and inner Westheimer Road.). These competitors featured late-night, weekend live-to-air from local dance clubs (e.g., Club 6400, The Ocean Club), where in-house DJs drew heavily from libraries of imported and small-label, extended-length modern tracks (which otherwise were seldom, if ever, heard on most commercial stations); by early 1990, KNRJ had partnered with the Tower Theater's Decadance to host its own weekend, late-night live broadcast. In early June 1990, during a morning talk show segment, the host personalities announced that Energy 96.5 would switch to an Alternative Rock format. The Alternative 96.5 re-brand was a transitional format, lasting roughly six weeks, and was promoted while a forthcoming format -- under a strategic decision by the station's owner, Nationwide Communications, Inc. -- was under preparation. My favorites remain the San Francisco shows of Sarah and Vinnie (97.3FM) and Fernando and Greg (99.7FM). However, when I am assigned to jobs that allow me to listen to podcasts all day, I find myself out of things to listen to (and I am not a music fan). I tried Kevin and Bean from Los Angeles' KROQ station, but I listen to them out of desperation -- like when my main podcasts are on vacation / hiatus. I don't remember how I came across the HOT Show, but I am glad I did. The show is a mixture of entertainment news/gossip, weird news, and brief glimpses into the personal lives of the hosts. In between are the songs that play on the station, but they mostly do not show up during the podcasts (except by accident). I've only listened to several weeks' worth of podcasts, but they are already fast becoming a favorite. They have a "Whatcha Doin' at the Courthouse?" segment. They interview celebrities. They talk about the stuff that modern morning radio shows do (but not do the stunts from morning "zoos" of days gone by). They're easy to like -- and they can get annoying at times. PK is a strong personality on the show. At first I thought he was African American, but when I saw one of the UStreams, I was completely wrong. I notice that Sarah Pepper is often trying to say something, but PK's commentaries tend to mute her until she can get a word in. I don't know Ivan's role, except to add a "Latin" flavor to cater to the demographics of Houston. Although, both Ivan and Sarah like to point out that PK is the foreigner in the group, since he was born in Greece, whereas the other 2 were born in the States. When the group is on air, the vibe is very on point -- meaning, they don't speak in a relaxed tone that I am used to from my Bay Area shows. They are very broadcast-ish, is the best I can describe it. I can tell they have an agenda of things they want to discuss, and they tend to get to them in a timely manner. By contrast, my Sarah and Vinnie show almost never get to half of the items on their list, because they always go on tangents that delve into their personal lives (which makes the show very personable, in my opinion). Overall, I love the HOT Show, and it is already in my top 3 morning radio podcasts I look forward to listening to every weekday.

The Box! Good Morning H-Town!…read more This Houston rap station has some good stuff. It's all hip hop and R&B and rap all the time. They've got so many commercials on here that trip up my jam. I'm crankin' it real slow and low on the Tollway, and an ad for Mattress Mack comes on the air blasting some news about his mattresses when I'm just tryin' to chill. This station is good to mix with some syzzurp and Mister Pibb while they jam some DJ Screw or some classic hip hop. If you call and request tunes from your buddy's fly new solo tape, they won't play him unless your buddy is Jay Z. This station plays all the songs that the local ones generally won't play, but they keep it clean, especially when it's mostly advertisements on this station. Be sure to tune in online or at 97.9FM

Clear Channel sold the station to Cox Media a long time ago, and thy've been playing fewer commercials since, but it's still a lot of commercials. They rarely have any call-in contests. Why don't they play more Hank Williams? They really play more modern country than any old timey stuff that I tend to like, personally. They play a lot of the same stuff over and over and over.
